Subculture - Personal Statement Example

30 April 2007 Subculture Critics admit that modern subcultures become no more than the sum of their representations, an interpretation not so far removed from postmodern theories of subjectivity where sub-cultural identities can have no substance beyond the succession of styles through which the self is constituted (Barker and Beezer 38). My subculture is influenced by a school environment, modern music, fashion and eating preferences. I prefer to wear trendy jeans and blouses but avoid bright colors and high heels.

I dress like I do because I like the way it looks and I do not like to shock people around me. I suppose that shocking way of dressing typical for those people who go against the system trying to prove independence and personal freedom. I do not life to waste time and efforts on shopping. Attitude to learning and friendship reflects my subculture: I am a hardworking, persistent and diligent student. I like parties which is a part of my subculture. Regardless of the style and social backgrounds, parties' culture represents freedom from rules, structures, controls and lifestyles.

I can define this subculture in terms of inner self and 'people like me'. I like pop music including Latino singers and jazz. These music trends reflect youth priorities on a day-to-day basis. They become an example for background and ethics, morals and way of behavior for millions of people. This subculture affects all aspects of culture in a positive and negative way: how people dress, what music they listen to, and what they choose for entertainment.Another interesting part of my subculture is eating.

I am a fast food eater. Eating is one of the most essential processes in our life which supplies our body with energy and mineral elements. Food determines different ways of living and personal culture of every person. I suppose that eating habits are more important than a trendy style or music you listen to. For most Americans, the good life means good food. For home eaters, food is an established tradition which can be called "home cuisine" or a ritual they like to follow day after day, but to some 'ignorant eaters' food is nothing more than everyday "duty" or "obligation to their body" in order to survive.

Fast food eaters represent a special food culture. In spite of the fact that nation's top researchers alarmed about the rise in childhood obesity and demand a complete overhaul of the way unhealthy foods this group seems the strongest one rejecting all scientific facts and arguments. On the other hand, meat eaters and fast food fans do not accept any code of "eating values" and become free to select their life paths. I like to visit fast food bars where I meet a lot of my friends and communicate with them.

Eating factors have changed sense of self and self-understanding. For me, food means a particular culture I represent and respect. Modern life involves a change in the nature of society and the structures of food consumption patterns. Some of these values conflicts with my identity because I try to avoid unhealthy and fat food, but modern fast food restaurants propose great number of healthy-conscious menus and low caloricity products. Music and personal style are important qualities of my character.

Students' parties are considered as a cultural phenomenon brining novelty and new vision of cultural norms. Traditional parties' culture (loud music and shocking cloths) conflicts with my beliefs and values.
