When I moved to the United States after graduating high school, I saw the incredible difference that quality medical care makes in the lives of individuals. As a result of seeing both sides of the issue, I have made the decision to devote my life and career to helping provide the best care possible for people. Thus, my first reason for choosing Pharmacy as a profession is that it will allow me to make a difference in the lives of people. My second reason for choosing Pharmacy as my life's work is that it suits my personality and technical skill perfectly. During my years in the army, I was exposed to numerous professional pursuits and had the opportunity to experience a wide variety of activities. During this time, I always returned to my interest in Pharmacy because it was such a good fit for me. When I left the Army, I was allowed to shadow a local pharmacist which only confirmed what I already knew; this profession was my life's calling. I have a natural empathy for people and want to make a positive contribution to their lives. I am studious by nature, and have the ability to concentrate and pay great attention to detail. These two aspects of my personality will find their greatest and best expression as a pharmacist because my caring heart and technical abilities will be able to be combined into a single life pursuit. Finally, I have chosen Pharmacy as my career because I understand the vital role that pharmacists play in both the healthcare system and improving the quality of life for individuals. Pharmacists are an important bridge between the patient and their doctor because they provide important information directly to the individual. People have so many questions about their health and the medicines they take. Often, the doctor does not have time to explain the details of the medications they prescribe, or the patients are too intimidated to ask a lot of questions. With a pharmacist, people are more willing to discuss their medications because the pharmacist seems more accessible. I know that I want to be a pharmacist because I want people to have the information they need regarding their treatment and how it might interact with their lifestyle or other medicines they are taking. This profession will give me the opportunity to give important advice while caring for the people who need it most. I will be a great pharmacist. I have seen the impact of healthcare on the lives of individuals. I have the personality and technical skill to learn the profession and apply it in assisting people every day. The important role of helping patients manage their treatment and emphasizing the precautions they must take to maintain their health is what I want to do for the rest of my life. My Priorities in Life As a mother and former member of the U.S. Army, I have had the opportunity to travel to many different places, experience much of what life has to offer and see the things that are important. I have three fundamental priorities set for my life; to finish school, to fulfill my chosen professional goals, and to help people. My first life priority is to finish my education. As I have indicated before, I am very aware of the benefits of a quality education. Being raised in Jamaica, I witnessed first hand what happens to people who are not allowed to develop to their full potential. After moving to America, I saw the other side of what education can provide to a person, and I want to reap those benefits for myself as well as my children. I know that in order to develop my full personal potential, I must attain success in my chosen career and that means successfully finishing school. In fact, I don't just want to be successful in my studies, I want to be outstanding. This first milestone must be achieved for the others to have a chance at being fulfilled. Accordingly, at this time, I am focused on the completion of my studies in pharmaceutical training with a high degree of accuracy and proficiency. My second major priority is to fulfill my life's goals by being a healthcare professional dedicated to pharmacy. Given the exposure I have had to the profession, both in the military and shadowing a pharmacist afterward, I am confident that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. In fact, being a pharmacist is what I have wanted for a long time. It is the profession that fits with my natural abilities and desire to help people because it allows me to be involved in helping with their medication regimens and educating them about their conditions. Finally, my third priority is to help people. I want to make a difference in the lives of individuals. By this I mean not only my own family, but also the large number of individuals I will assist as a pharmacist. For my children, I want to provide them with some of the opportunities I never had. I want to be able to see that they are educated and enriched as individuals, growing up into healthy, productive members of society. I want to be able to provide them with a college education and see that they fulfill their own career goals. Being a pharmacist will allow me to do this. For the general public, I want to be a person who offers care and concern. I want to contribute to their lives in a meaningful way by helping them know about their medical condition and what to expect from their medicines, but also to give comfort, compassion and understanding so that they can feel better about their treatments. In summation, my priorities are very simple and direct; finish my education, become a pharmacist, and help my own family as I help others. Pharmacy: My Reasons and Goals I have thought about why I want to be a pharmacist, and have come to the conclusion that I have three reasons, and those reasons translate into four milestones or goals that I want to accomplish. My first reason for choosing pharmacy as a career is that I have a compassionate heart and want to help others. As noted previously, I have first-hand knowledge of what insufficient healthcare does to a community. I want to make a difference in the lives of people through my ability to help them manage their treatments and understand their condition. I want to offer them a caring and compassionate service that will bring comfort and education to them. I also have chosen pharmacy because I want to help my family. I have two children along with my parents that I care for and I see a career in pharmacy as a good way to do that. Not only will I be able to inform them regarding their medicines and the precautions they should take during the course of their treatment, but pharmacy will provide me with a stable career that allows me to have sufficient resources to provide an adequate lifestyle for my loved ones. My final reason for choosing this professional career is because I want to help myself. I want to feel fulfilled in what I am doing, and for me that means that I must use my natural skills and abilities in the service of humanity. By helping others, I am helping myself because of the personal happiness and fulfillment I get from doing what I have always wanted to do. These three reasons for choosing pharmacy as a career; helping others, my family, and myself, result in four specific objectives and goals for me to accomplish what I want to achieve in my life. These goals are laid out in a very logical order. My first objective is to graduate from my studies with a high degree of competency and understanding. By taking full advantage of this educational opportunity, I will be able to perform my duties with a high level of skill and confidence. Second, I must obtain employment within the profession so that I can put my skills and understanding to work. Accordingly, my objective will be to find a location where I can begin my chosen profession. At this point, my third objective will be to begin make a difference in the lives of people. I will be a caring source of medical and pharmacological information, as well as support and serve the needs of the individuals I meet. My final objective is to broaden the individual focus and influence I will have into reaching out to a community. Helping others can be done one person at a time, but making a compassionate difference for an entire community is my ultimate goal. My reasons for choosing pharmacy as a profession are based on helping people; myself and my family included. The objectives I have determined to achieve are to do what is necessary to succeed in this profession, and then turn my attention to the individuals and community that I serve so that I can make a difference in the world around me. My Skills, Talents, and Abilities I have several key skills, talents, and abilities that will help me succeed in my education. While I do not wish to seem prideful about these attributes, I am confident in them and in my ability to use them to gain success in both my academic and professional career. I have two natural skills that I expect to play prominent roles in helping me attain my educational goals. The first is that I have a natural intelligence and aptitude when it comes to understanding technical things. I have always liked math and science, and I believe that this basic skill will serve me well as I complete my education. Second, I have the ability to give great attention to detail. I know from my life experiences, especially in the Army, that attention to detail is an important characteristic to possess when working with scientific or technical endeavors. I believe that this is particularly true in pharmacological studies, as any mistake can ultimately prove very harmful to a patient. In terms of talent, I have a knack for being able to understand a difficult or challenging concept and relate that to someone else in easy terms. I believe that this talent will be especially helpful during my education as well as my professional career. If I can help anther person understand a complicated principle, whether they are a professor or a patient, then I am equipped to be effective as a pharmacist. Another talent I possess is the ability to project empathy and compassion. When I am with someone I am trying to help, whether it is my children, family, friends, or a stranger, they seem to naturally feel that I care and want to serve them. This talent is going to help me a lot in my studies, but especially it will serve me well when I am in my profession and interacting with patients. The fact that they will be able to sense my compassion will help them feel at ease and cared for. Finally, I have two abilities that I will be relying upon during my course of study to be a pharmacist. The first is my ability to focus intently on whatever I am doing at the time. I am not easily distracted from what I am working on and I know that this ability will help me during the course of my education. I will be able to concentrate on the material at hand and not be sidetracked from learning what I need to know to be a successful pharmacist. The second key ability that I possess is determination. When I decide that I want to do something, I set my mind to it and do not let anything prevent me from attaining my goal. I am determined to be a pharmacist, no matter what it takes. I will do whatever necessary; work hard, study hard, or put in extra time, to make sure that I successfully complete my training and enter the field of pharmacy. I am confident that my natural intelligence and attention to detail will make me a good student.
