Globalization Globalization has created lot of wealth for few pockets and misery for many to whom earning their daily bread matters. Land, due its availability at the nearest proximity of the developed or under developed areas has created a huge demand for purchase and sale particularly in developing countries like India. The major reasons for the demand for land are due to the investment friendly policies developed to woo the FDIs. The new investments have welcomed many companies into countries like India.
As per the theoretical knowledge globalization requires a make over to the existing land foe setting up townships, working spaces and amenities at the nearest town or city. The raise in migration, pressurise the city vicinity with increase in the density of population. The need to develop more land for living drives us to eliminate the greenery or natural habitat. Many cultivable lands were been taken away by either government or private realtors for the thrust for wealth. Land acquisition in countries like India created lot of uproar as people who depend on the land has to either relocate or they were forced to relocate leaving their age old habitats, the cattle, house etc.
Multi national companies like POSCO have planned huge investments in Orissa state of India. The investment has ignited people to raise lot of concerns as it requires lot of relocation and rehabilitation management at the proposed sight. According to Vijayan MJ, the state government and POSCO rolled out a billion dollar investment plan in Orissa state of India. The land required for the project is 4004 acres out of which 3566 acres is government land and the rest 438 acres is private land. In all, as per official data, 471 families would be affected from the three Gram Panchayats.
However, as per the local movement against POSCO, more than 4000 families, i.e., a population of 22000 will be affected by the project in the area. This difference emerges from the fact that government sources do not take into account most of this land that has been under betel, cashew and other cultivations for generations. Applications for claims under Orissa Government's Land Reforms Act 1960, for claims on titles, have been pending. A democratic settling and Land Distribution under the LRA will demolish the government claim about only 1/10th of the land required being private.
The article depicts that political parties are looking for temporary gains by lending land to Multinational companies. The political parties were unable to rehabilitate the population at a suitable place near to the land under development. The special economic zones for specific industry groups have led to loosing of valuable land used for cultivation, cattle grazing and building homes. The land acquisition issue has become a debatable issue as it is related to lending land to all the companies which has a very corporate responsibility.
The land acquisition may not assure sustainable income as farming. As the land owners are mostly illiterates they can be only employed as unskilled employees with low wages. This created a great uproar among the farmers and low income groups. If I was given a chance, I would like to lend cultivable land to farmers and I would request private or government investors to lend a yearly royalty for the land lenders. I would be implementing policies for uniform land acquisition throughout the country.
I would like to first assert on the government land for property development. The government should also be proactive in estimating the feasibility land acquisition from the low wage earning sector and should see to it that their livelihood is not lost due to land acquisition and development.http://www.financialexpress.com/news/globalization-cannot-be-stopped-buddha/329389/www.downtoearth.org.in/aagc/Indian_Chronicle_on_resistance_to_POSCO_Steel_plant_in_Orissa.doc
