After discovering my interest in dentistry, I persevered to widen my horizon amidst the challenges of language barrier. Even though I was still struggling to cope with the Canadian culture, I spent hours reading materials pertaining to dentistry. I do not boast of being an expert in this field, but I believe that the learning experience that I have so far has been so fulfilling. I have fun while pursuing my quest of understanding the human oral cavity. I have learned that nothing is ever hard when you are doing what you enjoy the most.

I have proven to myself that it is passion which takes a person to excellence. In addition to acquiring theoretical knowledge from books, I also strengthened my wisdom by complementing these with applications. In fact, one of the most significant experiences which really strengthened my desire to be a dentist is the summer which I volunteered at the dental office of Dr. Steve Van. Watching him as he accomplish the restoration procedure, I feel very amazed at how dentistry helps an individual find confidence in himself. Dr. Van enables me to see that dentistry is the combination of art and science which is used to transform a human's life.

During this experience, I became spellbound by the tremendous artistic and manual dexterity skills combined with science background that the dentist utilizes and performs a vital role in today's professional health-care. Moreover, I have learned the dynamics of dentist-patient interaction and the importance of team collaboration in a multi-disciplinary setting. Being born and raised in the harsh conditions of a third-world country, I have witnessed many innocent people suffering from preventable dental diseases due to insufficient oral care.

From this volunteer experience that enhanced my understanding of patient-care and the dentistry profession, I realized that I was once a patient of this inadequate oral health care that adversely resulted a loss of one of my teeth. Thus, I want to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to serve the community and to prevent these situations. Dr Steve Van helps me realize how interesting dentistry is furthermore becoming the portrait of an ideal dentist by providing free or discounted service to low-income individuals in addition to those with insurance plans.

Thus, as a deeply spiritual person, I see becoming a health care provider as someone more than a way to support my family-for me, it is also a way to serve my community. I feel strongly that the combination of my education and my volunteer experience makes me an excellent candidate for your school of dentistry. I want to pursue dentistry not only because it best harmonizes my interests and abilities, but also because it enables me to engage in a long journey of professional education. I believe that my strong work ethic, enthusiasm, compassion and manual dexterity skills all signify my potential to become a successful dentist.

Becoming a dentist will allow me to realize my ultimate goal in life-pursuing my passion and serving other people.
