My Role in Honoring America's Veterans There is no more honorable that an American can hold than that of being a Veteran of the United s Armed Forces. Just as we honor our forefathers and great historical leaders, each and every Veteran deserves the same recognition and honor. This respect is owed to the courageous men and women who have served in times of peace as well as times of crisis. The professional all volunteer Army has tended to distance the citizenry from a close personal relationship with our Veterans.

It should never be forgotten that these soldiers have volunteered to defend our country, everyone's America, and every citizen has the duty to honor these brave souls with their hearts, their minds, and their actions. We have an obligation to honor our Veterans with our hearts. This is accomplished by a public display of support by attending Veterans' ceremonies and events that bestow remembrance on those that have fought to defend our country. One of the simplest things we can do to show our gratitude to our Veterans is by personally saying 'Thank You' to a Veteran.

Go to a Veteran's Memorial service or visit a VA hospital, find a veteran and tell them 'Thank You' for laying your life on the line so that our future generations can continue to live with freedom and liberty. It is easy to be thankful for our great nation, and it is our role as Americans to show it and say it from the heart.Showing appreciation for our Veterans needs to be backed-up with a solid belief in our display of respect. We must be big enough to put our political squabbles aside when we talk about our Veterans.

Individuals, corporations, and political parties did not send these soldiers to war. America sends them and as Americans we all have the obligation to keep our political opinions in the political arena. Veterans are fighting for our right to free elections, differing opinions, and public dissent. However, these freedoms stop at our borders. When we send men and women into hostile areas around the world, we owe them the unending support and undying respect without regard to our political opinion.

Our role in honoring our Veterans goes beyond mere words and thoughts and it demands that we take action to take care of them. I and every other citizen has the duty to assure that our Veterans are being given the tools they need on the battlefield and the programs that they need at home. We need to continually persuade our leaders to spend the money necessary to give the best and most expedient health care, Veteran's educational programs, and make their entry into civilian life a success. We should be ready and willing to spend the tax dollars needed to put these programs in place and maintain their operation over time.

This is where the lip service ends and the real work begins in honoring our Veterans.I, and every other American, have an obligation to our Veterans. We owe them a show of appreciation by the outward display of a simple 'Thanks'. Our Veterans also deserve to know that America supports them. We may have our differences at home, but that should not detract from our total respect for their self-sacrificing duty. These brave souls are fighting for our freedom, our liberty, and the security of the next generation.

We need to be politically active by influencing the government to spend America's hard earned dollars on the Veterans that have earned it. This is a debt we owe. All these roles are significant, and taken together they will show our Veterans that we honor them with our hearts, our minds, and our actions.
