Born in 1732, George Washington, in his initial years, dreamt of mastering military art and western expansion while learning high morals and also gathered knowledge required by a Virginia gentleman. After working briefly for land survey, George Washington was commissioned as a Lieutenant Colonel in Virginia Militia in 1754. He fought French and Indian wars as an aide to Gen Edward Braddock. His experiences helped develop his skills to be a great military leader later needed in the fight for independence from England.
During 1759 - 1775 until outbreak of revolution, Washington managed his lands around Mount Vernon. During protests with England for excess taxes, Washington firmly expressed his objections to British policies. While serving as a Virginia delegate to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1775, he was unanimously elected Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. He took over command of his ill-trained troops and entered a war of independence lasting 8 years.
Gen George Washington was a brave leader, using military tactics learned during formative years efficiently. Most importantly, he utilised the element of surprise besides maintaining morale of troops during most adverse conditions and turning them around to serve well-beyond stipulated engagement ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Whether Gandhi was there or not, India would have won freedom in 1947 because Britain was setting all its colonies free following the Second World War. Even if Nelson Mandela was not there Apartheid would have been abolished in South Africa in the 1990s and indeed it is possible that if George Washington was not there, the United States would still have won independence in 1776. But therein lies the most important part. It is not that one event which defined those countries but numerous actions and inactions which happened since then. Indeed Gandhi may or may not have set the country free but his philosophy of non violence defines India. The eventual emphasis within the modern theories of leadership has been centered on the premise of bringing about a change that remains abreast of the times that will come ahead (Lynch, 2006). Changing the dynamic mindset of the organizational processes and behaviors is a significant undertaking and this has rightly been pointed out by these modern theories under the leadership tenet. The visionary role of leadership has made things easier, focused on the long term actions and sought clarification from the goal setting and objectives’ regimes (Zaleznik, 1989). The new theor...

The Key Macro Factors that Have Influenced the UK Grocery Retailing Industry since the Early 1960s

Johnson et al highlight that external macro-economic factors intrinsically impact strategy management and without accounting for macroeconomic factors in strategy development and management, a business will fail (Johnson et al, 2008, p.3). If we consider this contextually with regard to the UK grocery market; the move demise of the local high street store to the dominance of supermarkets in the past 20 years has radically transformed the grocery market ( Henry, 2008, p.77).
