Struggle in Fairy Tale Struggles are the effect of the action/reaction in a situation. This principle was cited by Sir Isaac Newton that the conceptwas the universal law of motion. The concept was applied even in literary scheme that for every action there is reaction. It is now regarded as the basic law of nature and of characters. This concept is what made a certain literary piece realistic. Realism makes a story appealing to the reader (Moore 1995). However, realism seems very minimal in fairy tale prose.
This realism is concerning about the action/reaction relativity in the story setting of the situation in the fairy tales. Somehow their unrealism can be credited for by the given struggle to them by its authors. Also by the very characterization of the characters that speak and reacted unexpectedly that made the story less credible. The core characterization build-up of a story character is essential in the very story itself. The goal of the creation of the character serves as the main turning point of the story.
An interesting story mostly relies on the reaction from the action given or from the struggle that the main character dealing with as a conflict. Literature scholars have been discussing and affirming this literary concept. In the matter of the fairy tale concept, it was traditionally formulated that the functions of the characters serve as the stable "serve as stable, constant elements in a tale, independent of how and by whom they are fulfilled", according to Russian Scholar Vladimir Propp (Lefavole. Org 2008).
He also said that it has been observed that the number of function in the fairy tale is limited and its sequence of function is often identical (Lefavole. Org 2008). Study says that changing the obstacle or danger of the story could also affect the reaction of the character. Thus the changes in the story then able to comply to the expected realism that critical reader would highly appreciate or prefer. Little Red Riding Hood. The story of Little Red Riding Hood had garnered number of criticism from the literary analyst especially at this setting.
Some of the factors considered within the story were debatable like the character story, and its plot. It has been observed that there are conflicting aspect in the character of the Red Riding Hood, and the supposed characteristic of her nature. Her innocence would be an excuse enough for a little girl to be sent in a forest where her grandmother lives. If the wolf had been portrayed with the real animal-characteristic of the wolf and not as human-like that has the ability to guile the girl as her grandmother, the story could end with the main character not able to reach anymore her supposed destination, also it could be that the girl could sensed an early danger with the wolf's presence and might think twice before proceeding.
Rapunzel. The theme of the story in Rapunzel is companionship. Rapunzel's imprisonment in a high tower together with the witch suggested its theme. There wouldn't be any conflict in the story if only Rapunzel could understand the witch's loneliness and the need of a daughter-like companionship from her. If she's able to understand the sentiment of the old witch whom she regarded as her mother who raised her, her love for the prince could wait until the time the witch passed away, the time she could be free.
The Princess and the Pea. The method of story of this fairy tale about finding a true love of the prince for a princess through a pea in mattresses is apparently absurd. The method was not finding for true love but discriminating certain people for expecting a very narrow and bias judgment of the supposed characteristic of a real princess.
