Global Terrorism Name: Institution: Professor: Course: Date: PART 1 FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO RISE OF TERRORISM IN ISRAEL Chapter five of the Global Terrorism book reveals several causes terrorism especially in Israel. It also gives clear details of the factors that contributed to the rising and increase of terrorism in Israel during the post-world war two period.Chapter five of this book has majored on the title -Religious Justification for Terrorism. This chapter also deals with Terrorism and the world’s religions(Lutz, 2004). The chapter has also expounded its meanings and themes through the following case studies: 1. The Zealots in Judea 2. The Sikhs and Khalistan 3. Aum Shinrikyo (Supreme Truth) 4. Hizballah 5. Anti-abortion activities in the United States 6. Al Qaeda and the global jihad The six case studies clear gives us very important information on the factors that lead to rise of terrorism in Israel during the post-world war period. The first factor that has come out clear here is religion. There are several religions in Israel. These several religions vary from each other greatly in beliefs and practices. Religious difference is seen with the Christians and the Islam or the Muslims. These religious differences greatly contributed to the rise of terrorism. People see their religion as perfect and the best therefore find it hard to tolerate other religions (Lutz, 2004). War also is a very important factor that led to the rise of terrorism. During the post-world war two period there were lots of wars. These wars that were experienced in Israel greatly contributed to the rise of terrorism.Other key factor that chapter five reveals includes the presence of militia groups such as Al Qaeda. These militia groups are the ones which facilitated terrorism in Israel and other parts of the world. Al Qaeda is a murderous group of terrorist who facilitate terrorist activities such as bombings, kidnaps and murder of people. The west are considered as super nations especially America. There are several reasons why the west should involve themselves in combatting terrorism in Israel (Lutz, 2004). The first reason why the west should involve themselves in combating terrorism against Israel is for the sake of peace. When a nation is countered by heavy terrorist activities such as bombings and terror attacks there will be no peace. The west should therefore join hands with Israel to fight these terrorism activities. Militia groups such as Al Qaeda are after destabilizing nations with their terrorism activities. The second reason why the west should involve themselves is because they have best required weaponry and machinery. They also have qualified experienced and the best skilled personal in terrorism. Terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda have sophisticated machinery and weaponry. It therefore needs great approach to combat them. The west therefore is in good position to combat them. The west also has the best technology required to counter this terrorist. Technology is greatly important in countering terrorist. This is ideally the terrorist also use technology in their activities and plans. Due to all these reasons the west should therefore involve themselves in the fight against terrorists. Terrorist activities should be discouraged and diminished by all means in all the nations of the world. Israel is just but example. The assist that the west will give to Israel will be very significant to not only Israel as a nation but also to the whole world. I therefore greatly recommend that the west give backup and support to Israel in this fight against Al Qaeda and other militia and terror groups in the world (Lutz, 2004). Chapter 9 of Global Terrorism majors on Terrorism and Multiple Motivations. It also expounds on Terrorist campaigns with complex causes. There are several case studies that have been used to bring the meaning more clear and elaborate. These case studies are: 1. Irish nationalists in Northern Ireland 2. Colombia: leftists and drug cartels 3. Russia’s Chechen quagmire 4. Nigeria: religion, ethnicity, and environmentalism 5. Troubles in the Philippines 6. Afghanistan and Pakistan The Global Terrorism reveals that the issue of Irish Republican Army (IRA) is religious and not cultural. A lot of facts to support this and provide tangible evidences have been provided. From this chapter 9 of Global terrorism book, we learn that the Irish republican Army (IRA) supports the Palestine’s. This is because they are catholic as them. They are against the Protestants which makes the majority of the population in Israel (Lutz, 2004). Chapter 9 of the Global Terrorism book clearly takes us to the history of what used to happen. The Israelites greatly oppressed the Palestine’s. This lead to the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to support them since they had the same religious believes. Both Palestine’s and the IRA were having a common believe and shared catholic doctrines. It is therefore clear that the issue that arises between the Irish IRA and Israel was religious. They felt the need to support and assist their fellow believers from the oppression they were undergoing. The British government was very effective in dealing with the IRA in Northern Ireland. The Northern Ireland is revealed from chapter 9 as dominated by Catholics as compared to the Protestants. The Catholics therefore greatly persecuted and discriminated the Protestants in Northern Ireland. The British government saw the need to come in and rescue the situation before it was too bad. The British government had to come in to effectively calm down this situation. This is because the Irish Republican Army (IRA) had earlier own executed violence in United Kingdom. The British government therefore had to come in to bring solutions to these conflicts. The kind of conflicts that were evident here is the religious conflicts. The Catholics executed violent acts against other nations and regions especially those dominated by the Protestants. The British Government tried their best to come up with solutions to these conflicts but it was not exhaustive. Violence activities were still experienced. This is basically because religious difference is a kind of conflicts which is not simple and easy to handle. It requires a lot of measures and actions to work on it effective. This is why the British government could not deal with this issue effectively (Lutz, 2004). There are several aims: goals and objectives of Al Qaeda. The first aim that the Al Qaeda has is destroy Israel. The Al Qaeda as a militia and terror group aims at destroying Israel. This is because Israel is dominated by the Christians. The Al Qaeda group is based on Muslim beliefs and practices therefore are against what they see as not their beliefs. The Al Qaeda also aims at driving out Americans and American power from nations that belief on Islam. The Al Qaeda are therefore against the American influence and there control of power of Muslims. The Al Qaeda also aims at uniting all Muslims and creating a nation that abides by all the rules of Islam. They aim at ensuring that they create their own nation since they take their beliefs as super perfect than the rest. They also aim at waging holy wars as the call it against the Americans and the Jews all over the world (Atwan, 2006). There are several ways in which Al Qaeda spread their messages. The main form in which they use to spread their messages is social media. Nowadays social media platforms have become several, cheap and have a lot of fans or users. Al Qaeda is using social media platforms such as twitter and Facebook to spread their messages (Atwan, 2006). They mainly use the social media platforms to spread their terror attacks and information. Al Qaeda also uses print media to spread their messages. The publish articles, treats or even various massages for circulation in the public. Al Qaeda does also use the internet to spread their messages. For example they take videos and upload them on the internet e.g. you tube so as to be vied by the public. International communities responded to the 9/11 differently for various reasons. Communities to the far end such as Canada and United Kingdom responded to the terrorist attacks by sending condolence messages to the victims of the attacks. Other nations were also shocked and send condolence messages after the terrorist attacks. Other nations were even creating public holidays to remember and mourn the dangerous terrorist attacks (Atwan, 2006). Other communities such as America set days to honor and celebrate the 9/11 team for what they did. This is to give ceremony and celebration of the work they did. Majority of the Muslim communities responded by crying out aloud that all Muslims are not terrorists. All these responses are varied showing clear indication that communities responded differently o the issue. There is no significant difference between Afghanistan wars and Iraq wars and Al Qaeda. From the history it is clear that Al Qaeda militia group is traced back to the wars experienced in Afghanistan. This means that the Al Qaeda must have originated from this war. It is therefore very important to understand this Afghanistan wars and Iraq wars in order to come up with clear ways of combatting the Al Qaeda terrorism. The same strategies used in the wars are the ones this militia groups are using to execute violent activities in various nations. Research reveals that Afghanistan is the main base of Al Qaeda. The master plans and kings of this militia groups therefore are the same people mastering terrorist activities in the world (Atwan, 2006). The Hamas had to break from the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) for various reasons. Among the main factors of this break was the involvement in the terror activities that the other communities could not encourage. Research reveals that there was no need for the Hamas to be chased away since Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) could chase them. The PLO was therefore responsible to take control of city of Gaza and the city of Jericho. They were then required to prevent any terrorism occurrence that could occur to the Israelites. The PLO therefore had to break with the Hamas. Terrorism activities therefore played a major role in the breaking up of the PLO from the Hamas (Atwan, 2006). A prospect of peace in the Middle East is an issue of great concern. In the Middle East there are three main areas among several others where terrorism and violent activities is witnessed. This includes Palestine and Israel, Afghanistan and Iraq and finally Kurds and Turkey. There are a lot of lives lost due to this violence and terrorisms. Several people are tortured, killed and murdered totally against the human rights rules and regulations. The west especially America have been day in day out trying to come up with solutions to this vices but in vain. The Middle East therefore has been in over time and again engaging in wars and terrorisms. Despite the fact that the west and other nations has tried their best to come up will reconciliation and to neutralize the conflicts, the prospects of peace is still a difficult task to undertake. PART 2 DOCUMENTARY REVIEW Biggest Prison escape in UK and Ireland History - IRA Breakout (Documentary) occurred on 25th Sept 1983 in N. Ireland. The most sophisticated prison of that time in Europe was Maze. It was also the most secured of all. It was the facility used to lock in the prisoners guilty of paramilitary offences. In what will remain in the history of Britain 38 IRA prisoners managed to escape from H7. They were all guilty of great offences such as murder. Several guards in the prison sustained injuries as one of them succumbs to the injuries. This later emerged as propaganda and it led to many calls for senior personnel in the prison and relevant ministries to resign (Pedahzur and Perliger, 2009).
