As a student, I had to employ the above information in IAGE media company where I undertook my internship. iAge is a famously known weekly newspaper in South Australia, and it is among the newspapers that are mostly read. iAge newspaper is a Chinese publication in the Republic of South Australia. It delivers its services through excellent media channels which have been established by the company. These channels include Business directory, Weekly Newspapers, Radio Program, and websites. These companies’ successes have opened it up for partnerships with international and elite local brands as well as businesses (Ellis, 2016). IAGE Media Company has created an excellent network of communication with the South Australia community which is mainly Chinese as well as the entire local population of the Australian community as from 2007. The IAge media company has established three weekly newspapers that are published under its umbrella. The main three are the weekly investment newspaper, the general weekly news which is subdivided into weekly subsections as follows; business weekly, IAge weekly, and the overall business weekly news and the third newspaper among the three is the property news which has one subsection of Property Weekly. With the world’s technological advancements, IAge Media Company has moved into adopting and always absorbing the new technology. The technology includes ultra-modern equipment of collecting and gathering information as well as the expansion of the channels to disseminate information. These are mainly adopted to make the IAge Media Company stand out as the leading media company in providing news globally. The channels include the social media platforms that have been developed by the company to ensure that news reaches a good number of the global population. It has the news portal that is the www.sanchise.com, the wechat and weibo platforms of the local Chinese and the international and Australia wide news updates. From the above social media accounts, the company has achieved its objective of being a global media company. Since IAge, Media Company is the leading provider company of information and making advertisements in the southern Australia, the day to day activities include newspaper, Multimedia Publishing, Directory, Marketing Services, Advertisements, Project Management and Public Campaign Planning. The media company products involve the publication of newspapers which are released on a weekly basis such as the Adelaide Chinese Business Weekly, Adelaide Chinese iAge Weekly, and the Adelaide Chinese Property Weekly. It also involves Public Relations, editing of the information gathered of both Chinese and English and practical writing of information to be published on the company’s website. Some stunning work can also emerge in the process which may be providing elections news from the government as well as editing and translating regional information. It involves traveling to various places and arranging logistical facilities for conferences and seminars after which a lot of things are done including service, a security issue, and media report. In a nutshell after the works of Public Relations, Communications and driving, there is a general use of computer applications that involves Presenting information in power point Microsoft word, excel spreadsheets, movie software, InDesign, photographing and use of Photoshop. IAge Media Company is a company is considered important in business relationships in the entire Southern Australia. Business utilizes the media company to develop trust, relationships, interact and identify more partners. The contribution of any media company is essential in our co-operate environment, the relationship between the IAge media company, and the other business partners are given more weight than the relationship between IAge media company than other similar media companies such as the SA Chinese Weekly, Bilingual and Layout companies among others. The vital role played by the IAge media company is business marketing relationships since it has a well-developed advertisement model. The main theory here employed by Iage media company is that of network-based marketing relationship (Jussila, 2014). This theory is inter organizationally-oriented and presumes network-like context of a business relationship. It focuses mainly on long term Relationship, strategic alliances, Partnerships, network organization and vertical Integration of products and buyers. In Long-term relationships it is a continuous interaction between IAge media company, other media companies, and business firms whereby benefits are obtained from these mutual interactions. For example, other business firms get benefits of customer attraction and retention from these company since it is the one that does most of the advertisements on the companies’ commodities. Partnerships with business companies allow each party to invest in the partnership and the long run, it helps them develop high levels of trust and cooperation among these two companies. The success of the partnership is laid on pillars of communication, planning, and the degree of sharing, coordination, accommodation and competitiveness. Strategic alliances involve making significant investments to achieve mutually strategic goals. Network organization is major in marketing business companies in South Australia and Chinese since IAge Media Company is well known globally it provides global markets to local business and other related Media companies. These strategy has helped local business companies to beat existing local competition domains. IAge Media Company provides distribution of products channels for integration of business firms through vertical integration and thus serves to reduce risks, and that may be experienced by the industry companies. IAge Media a leading media company in South Australia, and it is a Chinese media industry. It was founded in 2007, and since then it has made commendable benchmarks in the press market majorly Chinese media Market. Communication diligence and sincerity are the major pillars in the companies working culture. These are the driving forces to provide high quality and independent services in the media industry. These companies exercise the multimedia and multi-channel marketing and branding approaches that make it occupy the top position as the Chinese media industry to use the strategies in South Australia. It manifests itself into IAge media whose primary functions is to build a variety of social platforms and media channels, and the iAge creative charged with marketing and advertisements and promotion of client services( O’Brien, 2016). IAge has developed transitional ICT toolbox that has been equipped with various materials for training purposes including software applications. With the aid of research institutes, iAge made an inventory into related tools that are supposed to be found in the ICT toolbox. The tools are appropriate for taking the end user needs into account (Dal Zotto, 2017). It is through this hub that iAge has achieved a significant progress designing local solutions that are useful in the global world. iAge has a functional website, and it is also found in blog spots and Wikipedia. iAge has an active Facebook, Twitter handles, and blog, a channel through which clients follows the company’s progress. Most of its advertisements, news, and marketing is done through the website http://www.iage.com.au, and the Facebook group and blogs are used as reinforcement to the provided information. 2.0 Section 2 2.1 Reflection on How I secured Placement Work I was able to secure my placement work by building very positive relationship with the host workers and even other clients. Practicing common courtesy for example putting up smiley face was among my first steps in building a cooperative workplace. By doing so, I was able to cooperate effectively with staff by maintaining eye contact and referring to co-workers by name. I also ensured the use of effective communications and majorly learned to use instant messaging, email, phone and personal visits in most cases when in engagement with my coworkers. However I utilized email as the standard communication mode using helpful subject line. I sometimes gave benefit of doubt upon realizing someone who tried to blow me off. In most cases I approached my own manager in the first place to seek assistance. I was able to give respect to other people's time and noted that every job is a service job therefore; I never tried to hover outside someone's office especially while they're busy with someone else. At no cost did I hand off work requests from anywhere else if not from the office. I made sure that the line between work and personal lives was respected. Helping me, whenever i needed assistance from someone else at work or had a question enhanced my positive relations. I tried looking up the information or the task before seeking help, sometimes I was able to do it partially and that earned me respect. I often preceded with caution on social media by reviewing IAGE media company social media policies and this made me aware of the requirements. Through this, I was able to avoid engaging in inappropriate relationships with co-workers on social media to avoid presenting my unprofessional side. I also did not share any confidential information about other workers or the company. I concentrated on my job and maintained the operations and integrity of the company. More important, I stayed on the level by treating everybody equal and not getting in any form of gossip. Instead, I followed up with people especially after involving them in completing a task, I often sent emails later if things really worked out this helped to solidify my relations since I showed the colleagues how I cared about activities we performed together. 2.2 Reflection on your use of BMedia Theoretical knowledge I was confident with my degree because apart from all that I learnt in class, I was well equipped with additional and relevant skills employers often consider for internship placement. I was well conversant with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). I had written a lot of essays, created slideshows and organized data in a table severally in the group projects that we undertook in my coursework. Currently, majority of internships require these Microsoft office skills and I had used these programs before even in liberal arts. These would help me manage and present data since recent job are based on data analysis and it was very crucial to have that ability to synthesize, manage and organize data for example in public relation programs of the host company. I was aware that most employers assume that interns are proficient Microsoft office so I was ready. Even with my degree, I had leadership experience which I indicated on my CV. I was confident that even though i might be an intern with all the qualifications for professional media degree, my skills in leadership would tell employers that i am more relevant in the workplace. I gained this by my participation in extracurricular activities, community service and volunteer opportunities. I took advantage of such opportunities put more effort on them as well as participating in discussions and helping at events, I was sure I had a lot of field experience needed by the host media company. To add, the skills I had in concise writing enhanced my surety with the media degree I undertook. My capability to write concisely made me feel that I would be of value to the company especially in writing publications, memos and reports. I found that the host company sorts out the abilities to create and/or edit written reports in internship applicants. Verbal and written communication skills I had also enabled me to write better cover letter and resumes. Photoshop skill I had also increased my confidence because I knew this would inform the employer that I could for example develop good web graphics. 2.3 Learning Objectives While on the internship, I understood and performed the entire process by which a media publishing agency works and this was one of my objectives. This was good for me because it improved my public relations skills. I also achieved my objective in enhancing Chinese and English editing and practical writing skills, for example I and colleagues did some detailed research on the college and university in Adelaide. I then was in a position to re-write brief introduction about Adelaide Universities and Higher education industry on website using both English and Chinese. The face to face interviews I performed to clients improved my communication skills and teamwork skills and this was among my objectives. I took part in an interview of OZ festival sponsored by ANZ where I interviewed the district manager for ANZ. I obtained information about festival background and the strategies that were employed for both ANZ brand image and the event. That amazing event represented Australia culture diversity. I also had a chance to participate in business interviews with the company’s marketing director for example one with baby and children stuffs sales store who sell clothes, toys and decoration. Reflection on the Use of BMedia practical skills I wrote a media release for various organizations including the ones I interviewed. These were published on newspapers including IAGE weekly. Another interview was a Chinese Crust pizza store that made amazing pizza in Adelaide and I and the team were able to use the media channel to popularize the Chinese community in Adelaide by making advertisement posts. I was able to create for the interviewed companies websites and blogs that they used in marketing their products. I took part in photographic work whereby the clients I took snap of client’s products that I and the team posted on their websites as a form of advertisement. While in the internship some of the work I did included unexpected mission, for example the government elections news translating and editing information on wines within Adelaide. During the shows that I attended as part of my job, I was able to provide service, media report and security issue. This was by employing my writing skills in compiling of report. The computer based knowledge (Microsoft office) enhanced my organization analysis and presentation of field reports. Moreover, I was able to transform photos mainly images for the company that were to be used in advertisement and field work. Editing text and online graphics for the company was also part of my work. I used my knowledge on Photoshop to make the company’s website, social media page and blogs visually interesting and super creative to the public who are the customers to the company. 2.4 Code of conduct The code of conduct form was issued to me by the Chief Editor of IAGE media company which I signed. It contained important statement about how I should behave in my professional life within the company, my relationship with the newsmakers, contacts, sources, the public and colleagues. It indicated to me the guidance that enabled me observe high standards of ethics IAGE media group expect. Its main principles were integrity, responsibility, fairness, fairness, openness, truth and accuracy. I had to sustain proper editorial standards to maintain community’s trust. 2.5 Confidentiality and non-disclosure agreement I also signed this confidentiality agreement linking myself with IAGE media company and indicated the ‘effective date’. It indicated that I should always observe confidentiality of all materials and information either written or oral within my areas of work. It also included various conditions that I needed to undertake on confidentiality. 2.6 Training and induction I went through induction programs that were carried out to every intern who qualified for placements in the host company. The inductions took about two to three days and were on company’s specific aspects, social events inclusive. I was also inducted for a longer period that lasted for more than a month and I was inducted on IT systems, company-specific database, specific training on the job and overall awareness of the objectives and aims of the company including its position in the market and media industry. Formal training on skills for interview, tools for reporting and the company software were also provided. I was also trained on how to use database software, presentations and spreadsheet software. Before I could use any software, I was trained and had pass an exam is when I could qualify to use that tool. I was involved in a lot of computer-based learning. Opportunities and Challenges I had the greatest opportunity to gain the skills employers want in the media industry including editing, graphic designs, writing report, communication skills among others. I could therefore use my internship experience to demonstrate with evidence such skills. I also got the opportunity to improve my self-reliance skills that can me work independently and will therefore be able to organize my work in future. I had the opportunity to interact with the public during field work surveys and interviews; this enhanced my networking capability which will help me in securing job in the future. However there were a few challenges I faced during the internship work placement period. The project and work I undertook will serve as a concrete evidence of my abilities when presenting my portfolio to prospective employers; this was an opportunity to make me competitive in the job market. Sometimes I could find it extremely frustrating by not being given enough work to enhance my work experience. On the contrary I could be allocated too much work that did not add value to my career or to the company, for example casual jobs like cleaning. At some point I was not getting enough direction while undertaking some work that seemed to be unclear. I therefore had to keep calling on my boss for clarification which I felt could lower competence. Lastly on the challenges, I did not get enough feedback from my supervisor at some point after undertaking allocated work. I therefore was not able to identify the areas I should improve on. 3.0 Section 3 3.1 Reflection on Work Integrated Learning Work integrated learning is a process that integrates academic activities that take place in the classroom with work place activities (Webb et al, 2014). The process can take place in different platforms including the institution of study, place of work, over an online platform or direct interaction. I felt that the inclusion of Media Industry Placement was very significant in my course as it provided an insight to the current operations at the media workplace and current trends. I therefore felt that the university provided an essential avenue for an introduction into the work platform in the media industry. 3.2 Assessment of the value of the Media Industry Placement From the internship, I realized that the Media Industry Placement as part of my Media course was imperative in revealing the actual activities that take place in the industry. I felt better prepared to start work after school as I witnessed the daily operations at IAge and managed to relate the courses that I had learnt in class to some of the activities that took place in the host workplace. I equally felt that the management at the different placement offices had a chance to assess new talent from the students under the work integrated learning program. Furthermore, I felt that I had a chance to gain employment from the workplace on the basis of exposure to the place. 3.3 Suggestions for Future Students Based on my experience at IAge, I would like to recommend the following for students going undergoing the Media Industry Placement in future; a. Always ask questions The media industry placement is meant to provide a learning experience out of work. Therefore in case of any unclear concepts, instructions or processes the student should always ask. Asking also helps to avoid making major or minor mistakes. The fact that the workplace is new to the student means that most activities are foreign and need to be explained to the student. From asking, I feel that I learnt a lot more as the employees at IAge had vast experience and could explain basic concepts that I had learnt in class from a different perspective that was more comprehensible. b. Follow instructions and tasks given without complaint At first when I was given tasks that did not encompass my line of study, I felt like I had been undervalued. From these tasks however such a cleaning, I still learnt important information and values from the subordinate staff which was valuable during execution of other tasks. The employees would remind me of expected conducts and would also correct me on tasks where I had gone wrong. 3.4 Reflection on Industry Change The media industry has undergone remarkable changes and I was able to witness some of the new improvements during the placement. IAge has embraced globalization as seen through the integration of the Chinese and Australian culture in the company. The media company furthermore uses various channels for its activity which is among recent changes in the media industry. The multichannel platform is a suitable way to overcome the different distribution methods that are available for reception of information. With the world’s technological advancements, IAge Media Company has moved into adopting and always absorbing the new technology. The technology includes equipment that is ultra modern. The equipment is used for collecting and gathering information as well as the spreading out of the channels to disseminate information. These have been mainly adopted to make the IAge Media Company stand out as the leading media company in the provision of news all over the globe. The adoption of social media is a secure move as the company can focus on what is trending in its social community to spread its news. Social media has shaped the media industry as it is the fastest means of communication in the media and the most influential as well. IAge therefore has current practices in the industry that are in line with contemporary media trends. 3.5 Suggestion for Future Content Development in BMedia From my experience at IAge, I would like to recommend that the university liaise with a couple of media companies or more that can be used for regular training and workshops. These trainings can be added to the curriculum so that the students gain a more hands on experience. The regularity of the program will be important in preparing the students for their future in the industry and keeping up with upcoming trends in the industry as well. I would also suggest that the industry placements be assigned more time than twelve days as there was so much to learn but very limited time. One month would be a better period to understand each department in the company and gain a substantive experience.
