The pilot then goes ahead to shoot the dog over and over again, this gives the dog fear and leads to the death of the crew on the helicopter. This can be said to be evident by the fact that fear that the director manages to instil in his characters. The director uses a perfect setting and perfect occurrence of events, in that it is by the dog running to the American camp that the helicopter lands and explodes but the dog in this case survives by the reason that it is the main object of the movie. Though the movie does not leave any chance of anything happening ahead the audience is just left with suspense. The death of the helicopter crew gives the audience a new light to the plot of the movie though no questions are answered are answered but more questions are brought up. The Thing which from the start seems to be innocent and harmless turns out to be a dreary to the audience and to the characters themselves (Russell 112). The director uses his freedom and style in bringing out an explicit arrangement of the plot, in that knowing that there is cabin fever which causes anger in the isolated bases the director lets the events to open up in away that one leads to another. While the commander thinks he has done away with the trouble it comes out that by welcoming The Thing they have invited more trouble. The fact that The Thing survives the rain of bullets can also be seen as use of a metaphor by the director because on the other hand the gun man shooting at The Thing is killed by use of a single bullet. It is from this set that it can be similarly be applied that the troubles that are in the lives of the audience are self made. The director uses snow in the Norwegian camp after the fire has taken place to symbolize the fear, death and the uncertainty ahead. The director explicitly uses special effects to bring out the issues that the movie sought to address for instance the issue of aliens in space and amongst us. The director manages to answer this question by the depiction of The Thing as taking form of its prey thus implying any of them could be “The Thing” (Matthews 121). The suspicion and fear that the director successfully brings out makes his cast to successfully succumb to The Thing thus making the genre a success. The director’s use of special effects also manages to drive fear and the horrific atmosphere into his audience. It should also be noted that Carpenter manages to integrate the paranoia effects of the movie and the text (Matthews 88). It is amazing how the director’s setting manages to perfectly match with the mood of his characters, this comes out by the way that the season is winter and the men on the scene are all bored by everything that they are doing. The director places everything at the right pace at the right time, for instance when The Thing mutates to an ‘alien’ the director puts in place a flame thrower which is temporarily use to fight it.
