How Herbert Bayer would sell "O" Oprah's Magazine Introduction According to Eskilson (2007, p. 245), graphic design is the art of using visual communication that incorporates words, images and ideas to pass information to the individuals. This can be inform of posters, billboards, and web site packages with graphical elements such as color, texture, shapes, illustrations and photos. Sales promo, publicity and adverts play a major role in blending graphical design used in the promotion. They persuade, inform and activate customers’ desire to have the product at a low cost to meet the client’s need. Graphical design can also motivate the management as well as employees to have confidence in talking and selling the company out to the customers. Successful communications strategies are not all about creativity but the output result of the designs to achieve business goals and exceed expectations. According to research, graphical designed posters and adverts may be wasted depending on how the design is perceived by individuals. This also contributes to mass selling of the advert in that it can be interesting or boring to the audience hence gives a negative result to the management. It is therefore advisable for the company or firms interested in designs to have a clear objective on what is to be designed to promote and help in selling of their to targeted customers. The company should also pay attention to which mass media to be used in reaching the audience and majorly on who are going to perform the advert; it is the management of the firm or outside people of the advertising agencies. Graphic design uses shapes, mass, lines, colors and texture as the main elements. This elements help bring out the intended idea of the designer to the clients. Herbert Bayer the well-known graphic designer of the world uses these elements in most of his arts to pass the idea to the audience in most of his works. In designing a magazine for example the Oprah magazine, Herbert would employ the use of lines on the magazine to enable him organize the content of the magazine and pass the appealing message to the audience with ease. Lines in design, helps in reading through the message of the designer. Hence, Herbert would use these lines to textualize the message, guide the readers eye, organize, make statement clear thus convey meaning universally to the target group of audience (Eskilson 2007, p. 265). Shapes Herbert like using shapes in most of his arts, in designing the magazine this would be his greatest point of focus to pass his message. These shapes include circles, rectangles, ovals and squares. These shapes when used with lines in the publication of the magazine plays the role of guiding the eyes of the reader hence helps in organization of the whole work during publication. Shapes also helps in conveying the universal meaning to the audience when used with other geometrical shapes such as hexagons, cones and octagons. These make the basic types of geometry, abstract and natural. Being the director of Vogue Magazine in the United States of America, Herbert fits to be the designer and the marketers of Oprah magazine since he has all what it requires in designing the appealing and eye catching cover as well as the content of the magazine in general (Drucker & Emily p.39). In Vogue Magazine, the cover appeals to the eye that also contributed to its selling all over the world. Herbert’s work of art and design depicts that he is able to sell the Oprah magazine widely to since most of the natural shapes he uses in design are manmade and unique hence making it look new and desirable to the audience. The stylistic devices he employed in the making of the magazine a success was through the simplified natural shapes that are irregular. This will enable the selling of the magazine by Herbert and make enormous profit to the organization. Mass This is concerned with how the magazine would be in terms of graphical weight or text elements used in writing. From Herbert’s’ art works the art works is good enough to appease the audience hence making Oprah Magazine to sell, Herbert would prefer his skill s on the large images, photos, lines and text so as to get the attention from people. The title of the magazine should be large with calligraphy just as design of the Vogue Magazine. This will make the magazine presentable to any individual on the streets or any newspaper vendors. Herbert has experience on painting and art besides being a graphic designer; this will challenge his creativity to make the cover and the magazine content new hence make people buy. The marketing firm of the magazine will maintain the personal relationship with the readers and other audience who might find the magazine useful to them. In addition to mass attraction to the Oprah magazine through Herbert, the size of the paper should be standard just as most of his art work which are standard in size and in paper (Heller & Mirko 2008, p.40). This will also help in the selling of Oprah magazine by Herbert. Color and Texture In designing, color is used to pass message just as Herbert’s arts which uses different eye attracting colors to relay information to the audience. When used incorrect can result to the down fall of a particular design thus affects the firm relationship with clients. To make the magazine have an official look, Herbert would prefer the black and white color and shades of gray on the cover. These colors are seen as the official colors in graphic designs which evoke mood, powerful message or emotions towards any design as an added dimension. And with enough experience on the field of graphic design, Herbert will be able to make it official by using the colors. Red, green and blue colors are most in Herbert designs to depict that he like these colors. Since graphic design is a personal interest design to the audience. He will be at the perfect position to make it depending on the color he will use so long as he has the inner drive to make it a success. With illustrations from his designs, it is clear that every color is symbolic to what is passed to the audience. Texture on the hand refers to the visual characteristic of the paper or layout of publication. The texture can be embossed created with graphic techniques to enable it have appealing view. Herbert is able to select a standard texture depending on what he would prefer to use. Designs by Herbert tend to have a clear and smooth texture as only a few do have the rough surface. Texture cannot be designed using the desktop publisher but it is determined by the paper used for design. This can only be improved through the use of lines and other shapes to bring out the texture of the paper. Lines are drawn on the paper hence brings out the roughness or smoothness of the paper. Magazine designs mostly have smooth texture so as not to absorb much ink during printing process. Some of Herbert’s publications and other works he has directed are always great work for example the Vogue Magazine which has smooth surface on the cover and some pages to minimize misuse ink usage and give the sleek character of the magazine (Palacio & Armin 2009, p. 514). Principle of Herbert Bayer Designs Balance Eskilson (2007, p. 244), the designer employs balancing of elements into his works and art to attain the visual balance of graphics through formal, informal and radial arrangement. This with the magazine requires the designer arrange graphic elements such as lines, shapes and color on the page to meet the third rule of structural design elements. To design the magazine for selling, all the elements should be placed at the centre of the surface where all the publication is to be printed or designed. Balancing is very important in graphics because the eye on all human beings are equally balanced to their minds hence makes an audience comfortable with reading the article. This is by stressing on the power of text and the page so as not to tilt on one side. Since magazines are a form of mass media that is used to pass important massage to a target group, this requires highest level of creativity which in seen in Herbert Bayer. He has received various awards out of all designs including magazine designs and printouts. Proximity Drucker & Emily (p.43) asserts that this is a very important principle in graphic design since it involves putting together like items to create unity. As for the magazine design, all elements should be in union to get the effect of the design. Herbert’s designs have this principle of design which has enabled him achieve the goals of graphic design and art as well. For example in the Oprah Magazine, all the elements should be placed together i. e. title page, price if need be, date and month because they reveal time and headlines. In case the elements are a part, then the third rule of structural design is put in place. Other Principles Include: Alignment, Repetition, White Space and Contrast. Alignment of text in design is as important as any other principle of design. This is because when the texts are not well aligned, it will depict how shoddy the design is and this can cause a negative effect to the magazine. This is always used together with the lines so as to bring the correct alignment of text other than using free hand in drawing or writing. The graphic software also helps at this stage of design since it has all specific alignment option tools. A magazine should have a correct alignment of text so as to make it more interesting to the audience than giving them had time to figure out what is means. In addition, consistency of the massage in the design should be clear to achieve the goal of the design. The texts and the graphics can be broken by using the white space. White space is part of design as for the issue of the magazine it should be considered to create pause after every word or text this will give an audience eye breathing space. This also helps in reducing cramping and confusion in the page of the magazine. Contrast in designing brings about difference between two or more elements in design. It comes as a result of small and big, white and black to reveal the interest of the design. Magazines employ this kind of principle to give emphasis on the headlines, sub-headings, and other news of urgency. The readers’ eyes will automatically be directed to the headings without strain. The main objective of using contrast in design for example magazines is to differentiate the obvious. This is through font size, font, color and value of the graphic (Drucker & Emily, p.45) Conclusion In summary, graphical design is the core of all marketing firms. It is through design that most products in the market will top others in the stock exchange. Designing is a psychological process whereby designers use their creativity in making individual like or hate something. It through graphical designs that many products in the market even if they are of no importance people will come and buy not knowing how to use but because of its appealing design on the posters or billboards besides signboards. This is why it is advisable that the government should put more stress on the advertising issues to enable firms promote products through well experienced designers than picking individuals in agencies.
