Running head: Televisions Televisions s Televisions There are various kinds of media used these days and many of them are used for the rationale of providing information. This makes people aware of new things and gives an understanding of their surroundings. This is what that makes this world a global village. Types of media used are television, radio, newspapers, magazines, journals, books, radio, films/ ad films and internet. All these sources play their own main role in spreading information around the world, with all its integrity and truthfulness. The technologically developed hardware for this purpose is known as “Television”; giving out both, the voice and the vision. i Television is the mostly widely used mean of spreading information as it is helpful in not only delivering the information but also aids learning while people use their two main senses i.e. hearing and viewing. Research says that we can learn things more quickly by seeing and viewing things. The pictures or ads shown on television easily convince people to use these brands. Customers can easily know the advantages of the products they want to use without any struggle. It is the most effective way of spreading information. Educational television is also playing its role in building character and knowledge of young generation. Overcrowded schools, teacher shortage and enormous amounts of fees to be paid are the main reasons that are giving rise to educational television. ii Not only this, but television has played a great role in representing roles of different genders and people belonging to prevalent and vast spread of boundaries and geographies. Men and women are exposed in equal profusion and this impartiality is also viewed in actual life, predominantly in USA culture. Television and internet are perceived as the main hub of dispersing different and diverse concepts and things, especially malicious stuff, in every culture, but the point of showing all this so immensely is that one must gain knowledge of what is right and what is wrong, not getting involved into it. People get different information about values and customs not only of their own culture but also of other cultures in practice all over the world. There are three basic aspects television has played: i. Television texts contain meanings ii. All meanings are not presented equally. iii. The experience of television watching brings the utterance of the viewer into contact with the utterance of the text. iii According to a Harvard Business School article, internet connectivity gives rise to high tech future. “The most precious currency today is information”, which can be derived from not only television but all sorts of media used nowadays. Television and internet hold the awards of providing larger amounts of information readily are definitely used in greater amounts too. There are pressures arising from the social and technological needs to the merging of television and internet. Television has been a one-way device and now people require it to become a device that performs bilaterally to enhance easiness and it has triggered engineers at work. Rising markets and globalization has busted the possible and existing limitations and precincts. This information is what people want to be circulated in every direction and for every purpose. Many business models have already been constructed and there is still no surety which one of them will be successful. Engineers are generating their efforts in the right directions to produce successful results. Removing difficulty and adding simplicity for the consumers especially is the key to its achievement. Social connections are becoming a means of emotional attachment all over the world and it needs innovation to handle it nicely without creating any disorder. iv Development of television has its own story. It has grown over a period of time. It started in around 1880s when the concept of television was born. Early experiments were done in 1922 and the first TV sets were sold in 1928. This first TV set in the market was a result of hard brain work by lots of engineers. These engineers took first step towards making world a global village in which they attempted to connect every part and every corner of the world. Broadcasting began in 1935 and people starting enjoying. Television became popular in no time and further developments were started. First mechanical color television was made in 1951. First Every-color television (electronic one) was introduced in 1954. Then the Japanese offered high definition TV (HDTV) in 1987. Since then, television has played major part in our lives and shaping it into many ways and colors. v Almost every famous electronic company is offering different types of televisions. The basic types of televisions used, seen nowadays are direct view, digital light processing (DLP), liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma display panels (PDP). These models have been named here in accordance to their order of invention. The first ones i.e. direct view televisions are those which were benefit from by the baby boomers. The picture device include cathode ray tube and it came in all shapes and sizes up to 40 inches. Best black level picture was seen and it was the cheapest form of television. Then comes another type of television which is DLP; it was more advanced. Certain manufacturers’ DLPs have one hitch which they call a Rainbow effect or else it comes in raised and front ridge. LCDs come in various types categorized as flat panels or rear projections. Not only it comes in various types but also it is used for different purposes, people make use of it as television and computer monitors. This type of television was the one which came in very huge sizes and this is the reason that its picture quality was enjoyable. PDP’s are most associated with high end home electronics. They are at risk of burn-in but despite these rumors the gases filled in cannot be refilled. They can last for ten to twenty years. There are many reasons for the failure of previous technologies; DLPs were never thought to become silky and slim, Plasmas are perceived as another name of the burn-in problem and they are expensive. LCDs are thought to be energy efficient and more popular due to its picture quality and the capability if becoming thinner. Besides, there are measures being taken to stop the use of LCDs by 2011. The California Energy Commission is already taking steps to do so. It also has one small disadvantage that it leaves a blur in its vision while watching a fast motion picture, like watching a football match.vi In future, television would still take steps in its further advancement as it has done it. This leap in technology is not going to limit itself to just High definition LCD’s or plasma. The phrase that explains some room at the top, some room to become the best and some room for being the perfect i.e. is applied here in its true sense where every company tries to take a giant leap towards perfection. OLED (organic light emitting diode) technology is another improvement. It was introduced by Sony in the year 2008. It does not depend upon backlighting. The color of OLED is white while glowing and black when not. OLED displays use less power than the other technologies like LCDs. This is the greatest advantage nowadays in any television field. viiMentioning of no backlight means they are really slim, so slim that they are flexible. The question still remains that why they have not been introduced to be in our homes by now? They are there, either this way or that. They are present in deviations in our living rooms, especially is UK. Portable devices are also a part of this type of television these days. This is not the limit, even sky is not the limit, of televisions and that they will be much more admired than all the other types introduced earlier; that depends on marketing efforts and the usage quality in the end. The main point behind this competition is providing the customer with superior quality and satisfaction with the product which he is looking for. This is not the game of science only but the game of mind as well. viii Television technology has grown from time to time and many usage categories have been defined by the consumers. Here, the decision makers are not only the customers but the companies as well. These companies create a specific need and then define the usage of their product according to that need. According to those usage patterns, every now and then engineers are making it possible for the consumers to use it easily and in nearly highly acceptable way. Nonetheless, high definition and plasma machinery and others in the same category are really complex to use. Although the companies try to make life easier for the consumer, it is becoming even complex. Although a great invention in itself, Television alone cannot do those wonders which its connectivity with other devices can. References Burns, R. (2000).
