TV news production Television Production There are five stages in the production of most television programmes and each stage requires a different set of skills. A. Development This is where programme ideas are worked out and researched. Considerations such as genre, target audience, scheduling and the budget are taken into account. This is where new talent may attempt to make their entry into the television arena. If ideas are accepted contracts are drawn up and inevitably the script is subject to redrafts. B. Pre-production Having received a green light to proceed, the programme goes through a pre-production process where locations, contributors, actors and technical crew are selected. Storyboards and production schedules are drawn up, and designs, props, costumes, titles and music are selected or created. In effect, pre-production makes sure that everything is in place before filming takes place. C. Production A director is usually assigned the role of seeing the project through its shooting stage. The work did in pre-production, such as the production schedule, constitute the backbone of the production. D. Post-production With all the action shots recorded, the process of editing, sound dubbing and adding effects begins. The director hands over the responsibility to the editor, who has the crucial role of structuring the programme in a consistent manner. E. Publicity Once the grueling process of making a programme is over the next task is to market it via the media. Creating good publicity in advance of a programme is essential to attracting an audience. TV news production I offered an idea about fantasy of dreams and it was accepted for the project. We discussed about this idea in the group and we decided to ask from different generation about their dreams and also found out that what happens when a persons dream is changed or sometimes when they lose their dreams. I did the research part from different books and magazines. Then, I had a thought to develop that idea in the form of story for TV news production. I wrote the story for that. The story was divided into two parts. The first part was about interviewing with the different generation. I planned to make an interview with children in the kinder garden and take some shot like children playing with their balloons. I wanted to make a fantasy place and even the location gave me some kind of fantasy. I used the balloon as a symbol of fantasy and dreams. But unfortunately we couldn’t go to kinder garden because they didn’t allow us to do the filming there. But somehow we tried to find some children outside and also Patrick took some shots from the children who lived in his neighborhood. Then, we interviewed the young generation in the university. In this part we showed the students who enter to the world of reality and spoke about their future in a logic way. They choose a new dream which existed in the reality. I designed a shot that shows the students who enter to the university. In another shot we showed them that they are leaving the university and after this shot we showed the balloons which flew away. I thought it might show that the fantasy fly’s away when it comes to face the reality. Finally, we took some interviews with the old generation and I can say it was hard to stop them for interview. It really takes time to make the interview with them because they were in hurry. I decided to make an interview with old generation at the bus stop because I thought it could work as a symbol for last station of their dreams. One very strange thing what we noticed was that student lost their fantasy but they still have the dreams about their future and at the bus station, the old generation lost their fantasy and dreams because there is no future for them, it is the last station of life. In the second part of the story we tried to make an interview with a psychologist but all of them were busy and we couldn’t do that. So, we took an interview of a student who studies psychology and was going to graduate this year. So, he had good information about the subject. I just tried to ask him that what made the people to lose their fantasy and the answer was reality. I wrote an essay from the research that I have done and I gave the essay to Patrick and Andrei. They wrote the Introduction and narrative from that essay. I wrote the questions that we asked from the people and Andrei asked the question from the people. I worked with the camera and I choose the locations. I even designed the shots and the area that we place the camera except three shots that Patrick has already done. But, always I asked the other group mates about their opinion and if they weren’t happy with the shot, I changed that with different one while making the film. One of the important things for me was the locations and I spend most of my time on it. I tried to find some locations that showcase some meaning to the people. For example, in the shot that we interviewed with a student, I put the camera in such a way that it shows that there is long corridor in the background. The girl talks about her dreams in the past and we see the corridor in the background which is empty. I thought it could show her dreams in the fantasy world which no more existed in the reality. Her fantasy world is empty (corridor=fantasy in the past=empty). Andrei did most of the editing part and I helped him in the idea that how if we can cut a shot to another shot so that some meaning is conveyed to the people. Even, Patrick helped him in editing process as well. The atmosphere in the group was really friendly and we didn’t find any problem. Everyone felt free to talk about their idea and we discussed about that idea in the group and we always gave the respect to each others idea. In the beginning we were very slow but the second day we knew our duties and everyone did their part as a member. The big problem was about time. We didn’t have enough time for this project. I think because we spend a lot of time on research and less time on filming. So, most of the time we were in hurry and we couldn’t concentrate on some shots. But it was great experience and I learned a lot about the camera and frame. To mention a few a of them Jump cuts: - result when two sequential shots do not make logical sense. For example, one shot shows a person standing and the next shot show the same person seated or in a different location. Eliminating Jump Cuts The goal of any editor is to produce a video without any jump cuts. To achieve this goal, the videographer must have shot footage that provides the editor with a series of shots he can work with. Once you master this skill, there is little need for low budget postproduction. Several cinematic techniques are used in all films to make the material flow logically and to solve the jump cut problem. Cutaway Shots:-Separate two shots with a shot of something completely different. Reaction Shots:-Similar to the cutaway shot but contains a subject that relates to the sequence of shots. Walk In/Out Transitions:-The jump cuts result when the same subject is in different positions in two adjoining shot. Avoid the jump cut by allowing the subject to walk out of the first shot. Then they can appear in the next shot in a slightly different place. If the space or time separating the two shots is larger, start the camera before the subject enters the shot to allow them to walk in to the field of view. Cut-on-Action:-The ultimate transition is to have matching shots where the action is continuous between two shots. Cut the shot at a point in the action and begin the next shot on the same action. Then the movement will appear to flow across the transitions. Dissolve:-The editors mantra is "If you cant solve it, dissolve it!" The dissolve allows a transition between two shots that involves extremes in time and place. Children part: They understand that their dreams are to become character heroes but what they usually miss out the fact is that these heroes are not real.(Thomas,2006) Student part: Thus dreams are not just what they perceive of life but also how their future lifetime is going to shape up as well and this indeed is a quintessential aspect if seen in the related scheme of thing.(VIVINO, 1996) Slowly but surely all this dreams come to a level where they could be remarked as being “standstill” or stuck in the real scene of the world.(Randall, 1998) References: Thomas, James.
