The World of Math Ever since I was a young child, I have been fascinated by numbers. I am not sure where this love for math came from, but I do knowthat I can communicate better through the use of numbers. Perhaps one reason for my appreciation of math stems from the time when I was only five or six years old. Each night my father would come home and he would empty out all of his change onto the kitchen table. I was drawn to this and began to count the money on the table each night. As a side benefit, this also helped to develop my counting skills.

When I started going to school, I was already well ahead of my peers in terms of math. Many of my young classmates hated math because they thought that it was completely boring, yet I had the opposite feeling. Whenever the teacher asked a question that had to do with math, my hand would always be the first to shoot straight up. Most of the time I was able to provide the correct answer; this gave me great confidence that helped me in other areas of my life too. A few years later I grew somewhat bored of math because I was struggling to feel inspired to keep learning.

My math ability was way ahead of everyone else’s in my age group, and as a result, I could almost pass math tests in my sleep. However, this only worked so long before I found myself falling behind my usual high standards. Even though I had lost my focus on math work at school, I still had my love for numbers and liked to form new equations that I could solve. Presenting myself with new challenges was one of the best things that I liked to do because I had no boundaries, and I could test my own ability.

As time passed, my love for math decreased because I could find very few new challenges for myself. Some more years passed, and I managed to find my first job. The pay was not very high, but at least I was able to make my own money. This allowed me greater freedom because I did not have to rely on my parents to pay for small expenses anymore. I took my part-time job very seriously and tried to put the same effort into it as my father had done. One day I came home and emptied all of my change onto the kitchen table.

I went away and then came back to find one of my small cousins sitting there counting all of my change just as I had done all those years ago with my own father. This was like the light turning on inside my brain, and I knew that I had to get back to my love for numbers. This is why I have decided to go to the university and major in math: so I can inspire more kids to pursue their love for numbers.
