Appendix Introduction Vietnam is officially known as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, which is located in the extreme east part on the Indochina Peninsula in Southern Asia. After the battle of Bach Dang River in 938 AD, Vietnam became independent from China.
It was again colonized by French in the mid- 19th century and the political resistance against the French resulted in the war eventually dividing the country into two parts. In the year 1955, the American War was fought among the nations of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, which was soon followed by the Indo-China War- fought between North Vietnam and the South Vietnam. North Vietnam was getting the support from the communist allies whereas United States along with the anti-communist states supported the government of South Vietnam.
After the US forces deserted South Vietnam in March 1973, the government continued the US policy of pacification. Eventually in the latter half of 1974, North Vietnam breached the ceasefire and fought with South Vietnam. The war was finally ended with the seizure of Saigon by soldiers of North Vietnam in April, 1975. Saigon was quickly evacuated by the Americans and in due course and Vietnam came together as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in July 1976. (The American/ Vietnam War) The 1st April 2009 census reveals that the total population of the country is 85.
8 million out of which about 73.6 million are Vietnamese people (Chinhphu). The following graph shows the past and projected future population growth of the country. Population was at around 30 million in 1950 and grew to almost 90 million in 2010 reflecting a 200 percent growth rate. However the projected growth in 2050 shows a population of 100 million merely. Hence a slow down is reflected in the projected growth with a rise of 11.11 percent merely from 2010 to 2050. (World Population Prospects) As it can be seen from the graph, though the country experienced a growth in its population the growth is now increasing at a very slow rate.
The projected slow growth rate in the population implies that the government policies of two child and pregnancy termination will work in controlling the population of the country. The other 12.2 million living in Vietnam are from various other ethnic groups which mainly consist of the Tray, Thai, Muong, Hoa, Khmer, Nung, Chinese and Hmong (Ethnic Groups). The population of Vietnam on the basis of the ethnic groups in the country is shown with the help of the following map. Source: Google images.
