LEARNING LOG. WEEK 4: ARTS AND MARKETING What did I do? Listened intently right from the start seeing as the topic seemed quiet interesting. I knewart. And I knew marketing. But the two together were a blur. How do I think/feel about this? Envious of people who hold the power to express how they feel by using a simple brush stroke / music icons. And or have the ability to transition feelings onto paper through color or their voices. How largely creative an industry must be and how empowering it must feel to Create a byproduct of art marketing and launch it successfully and watch it grow and thrive. What did I think about but not say? (or what did I want to say but did not) Envious of people who hold the power to express how they feel by using a simple brush stroke / music icons. And or have the ability to transition feelings onto paper through color or their voices. How largely creative an industry must be and how empowering it must feel to Create a byproduct of art marketing and launch it successfully and watch it grow and thrive. How well (or badly) did it go? Went pretty well due to the presence interesting content and concise slides. What did I learn? Understood how big and rapid growing an industry art marketing and how its evolved from its basic elements like small museum displays into the hearts of millions through games designed for consumer entertainment. Say, need for speed. GTA. Tomb Raider. Newfound respect for the producers’. The huge initial investment it might incorporate and the even bigger returns. Say Harry Potter, the evolution of a piece of literature meant for children to a best seller, to a blockbuster and now a name children everywhere in the world recognize. What a chain reaction a piece of art can start. What will I do differently next time? I realized that even though the topic fascinated me. Next time I’ll be sure to read up on it so that I can be more interactive and confident in asking questions. What have I achieved? New found respect for art. This friend of mine who paints, perhaps the development of a concept from scratch isn’t as simple as he makes it look. What have I learnt about myself? That art, as a subject, I might want to study more of maybe somewhere down the line. How have I put any theory into practice? I don’t know if it counts as a theory but I think I firsthand have experienced all realms of art consumption. How does what I have been doing lead to me becoming better at a skill How can I use this to plan for the future? (How) can I use this to plan new learning experiences? Innovation in any future plan I make might just be the key to learning something new simply by doing the same things in a different way. Like next time when I go on a road trip with my friends I’ll try listening to a different genre of music, rather than sticking to just metal, who knows maybe I’ll like it. Or perhaps try singing at a karaoke, who knows maybe one day I’ll be a star. LEARNING LOG. WEEK 5: BUILDING BRAND CULTURE What did I do? Was relatively relaxed considering how I believed it to be a simple topic. How do I think/feel about this? Impressionable considering the daily exposure of dozens of brands I realize im under everyday. I wake up to Nescafe, charge my Nokia, listen to my I pod, put on my Nike.. I could go on forever. What did I think about but not say? (or what did I want to say but did not) My mind wondered towards the Enron scandal of fraudulent finance’s and I wondered how much of it was due to the organization culture. The thought wavered as the lecture continued. How well (or badly) did it go? Turns out, culture is an attention-grabbing topic. It’s light and relatable and the numerous examples helped recall concepts. What did I learn? I learnt that companies spend a fortune on developing organizational culture and it makes sense that they do since it leads to strengthening the brand which directly impacts customer recall which pretty much is the reason why they exist – to be seen, known and remembered. Also surprisingly, employees are as important a part of upholding the culture as the top admin is for being role models for it. What will I do differently next time? Read up on the topic. But somehow something always comes up. What have I achieved? A basic understanding of how core and critical a concept organization culture is. What have I learnt about myself? That I’d be a excellent employee one day considering how flexible and easily I adjust to various situational demands. Isn’t that what working for different organizations is all about? How have I put any theory into practice? Heath and Potter’s ‘rebel sell’ concept. Explains why I held onto my favorite shirt in high school simply because my parents disliked it. How does what I have been doing lead to me becoming better at a skill How can I use this to plan for the future? (How) can I use this to plan new learning experiences? The process of change that is meant to make you stronger can only be successfully implemented if the transformation takes places from the inside, the outside and across all aspects – pretty much like an organization’s culture. Perhaps that’s the process of change I should adopt to improve my academic performance. LEARNING LOG. WEEK 6: CONSUMER COLLECTIVITIES What did I do? Listen to the lecture but I’m afraid I was pretty distracted. Lack of sleep does not help matters. How do I think/feel about this? Slightly confused. I guess there is no escaping classification’s and people’s need to categorize everything. What did I think about but not say? (or what did I want to say but did not) I wondered whether the old forms of social communities were effective mainly because they were a lot simpler. In today’s complex environment does complicating each concept including the classification of consumers even result in additional accuracy? I didn’t bring my queries up though. How well (or badly) did it go? Not too well. The lesson was slightly confusing and I’m not sure I understood the differences between sub-culture, Neo-tribes and communities too well. What did I learn? I learnt facebook is gaining exponential strength through its basic purpose of social networking to evolving into a platform for various brand’s to effectively advertise themselves. Also that sub-cultures, tribes and brand communities are emerging new forms of a community. Each one of us belongs to one of them at least. What will I do differently next time? Get a decent night’s rest in order to be alert to absorb more of the topic. What have I learnt about myself? That I lack not only in economic capital but currently perhaps even in the social capital. How have I put any theory into practice? Hodgkinson’s ‘Facebook! Stop invading my privacy’ once when I had this certain advertisement show up on my page over and over again and I realized how extremely irritating ads that are forced upon you are. How does what I have been doing lead to me becoming better at a skill How can I use this to plan for the future? (How) can I use this to plan new learning experiences? Perhaps the key to a better understanding of people and decision making does lie in analyzing and categorizing them into suitable communities not just for the purpose of distinction but also for quicker recognition. For example: maybe categorizing people into good and bad, as you define it, can help you decide whether you would want to spend time getting to know them or not. LEARNING LOG. WEEK 7: CUSTOMER ONLINE EXPERIENCE What did I do? Listen intently.. How do I think/feel about this? Relaxed. It’s a light topic seeing as we’ve all been a part of the customer online experience at one time or another. However it was an interesting perspective to study its breakdown into theoretical concepts . For example Amazon puts a face on the concept of Individualization and association. What did I think about but not say? (or what did I want to say but did not) Nothing specific, concentrated on the lesson for the most part. How well (or badly) did it go? It went well. What did I learn? Benefits of personalization, how slight tailor made supplementary changes to a standard product can change how it is perceived drastically. Like the cosmetic customization of the Ipod. Hence knowing what to change is as important as the change itself. What will I do differently next time? Research on the disadvantages of key concepts, like mass customization, to build a number of perceptions about it. What have I achieved? A basic understanding of how marketing strategy relies on Individualization and personalization. What have I learnt about myself? That my fluency in the use of the internet is a valuable asset and one that can be channeled to accomplish a lot of tasks pertaining to market research as well as reaching out to the target market. How have I put any theory into practice? Mass customization (Collaborative) concept every time I select features for my fantasy car in PS2 games. How does what I have been doing lead to me becoming better at a skill How can I use this to plan for the future? (How) can I use this to plan new learning experiences? Fluency in the use of the Web. Focus towards efficiently retrieving information and conducting research that would contribute to the development of product proposals as well as organizing the information retrieved in a timely and competent manner.
