Known for its pioneering role in the mobile telecommunications industry (Story of Nokia 2010), this company still remains an industry leader. However, with the emergence of aggressive handset manufacturers such as Research in Motion (Blackberry and Apple (I Phone), and the presence of perennial competitors Sony Ericsson, Samsung, and LG among others, Nokia faces the challenge of maintaining its stature in the global market. It needs to develop more ways to address the consumer needs for smart phones that are hip, chic and highly functional. It also aims to be able to compete with the aggressive strategies of the other players. To address this, CEO grabs the opportunity to renew ties with business partners attending the annual Mobile World Congress and announce their latest effort to touch base with consumers. Nokia Launches the Design a Smartphone Concept By: Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, CEO Nokia Corporation Delivered at the Annual Mobile World Congress February 15 to 18 at Barcelona, Spain It’s another exciting time for us in the telecommunications industry with this annual gathering of the top and active players in the global telecommunications industry. I am very happy standing again before you as I did last year and the previous years because with the mobile business, there is always something to look forward to. The Mobile industry is such a dynamic field where imagination is limitless, and the potentials boundless. Each and every day, there is always something new to discover. While our network partners work on improving connectivity, we handset manufacturers find the best handset we could offer to complement the network improvements. Nothing ever stands still when you are in the mobile business. New technologies are just lurking around, waiting to be discovered, demanding attention. With companies gearing towards 4G, it follows that international carriers are also following suit. The popularity of streaming video, social networking and personal navigation services is considered top priority in the development of these new technologies. Smart phones continues to be one of the fastest growing segment of the mobile devices market and the demand will steadily increase with the emergence of new network technologies. The wireless industry is expected to shed light on its move to faster network speeds and show off a new batch of smart phones. For us handset companies, we are on the lookout for additional details on the benefits of upgrading the handsets to much higher wireless technologies. 4G is fast becoming the newest and most in demand in wireless technologies. Noting the demand for more innovative smart phones, we look forward to unveiling new phones this year. The company hopes to create additional handsets that are geared towards data and application management – a thrust that we surely share with co handset manufacturers. For this year’s annual convention, it’s not just a time to highlight the new handset models we have developed in the last few months. The thrust now is to focus on mobile applications and operating systems that make these handsets all the more exciting to use. This is why we continue to seek partnerships with various groups in achieving the goal to create mobile phones that seek to fit all the consumer’s communication needs. Nokia has always been motivated by its desire to create mobile phones that are user friendly. Connecting people – that has always been the desire of the company. The consumers are the primary priority. It is always their needs that matter. With this, Nokia is proud to announce its efforts to continuously connect with its consumers by launching the Design a Smartphone concept. Design a Smartphone concept aims to entice young geniuses into creating their dream Smartphone models, and incorporate in these their desired applications, whether existing or under development. To support this launch, we will be partnering with various media groups in the US, UK and Asia to ensure that we reach the target groups. Our Global Public Relations are also well into touch basing with top universities to encourage students to contribute. Bottom line is we want everyone to share their inputs to eventually create handsets that are near, if not perfect. We want to listen to the consumers so we could learn from them. After all, the efforts are for them. We work on utmost customer satisfaction. It is their inputs that matter. We will work hand in hand in achieving this goal. Furthermore, doing so will reiterate our commitment to serve the needs of the market with top-of-the-line and most up to date mobile phones and applications. The second phase of the Design a Smart Phone concept would be getting the market involved in voting for the products of their choice. After the preliminary evaluation of the new handsets, we will create prototypes for the market to view and re evaluate. We will then open to the market a text voting system, and this will hold true for mobile providers around the Globe. This way, we would be getting substantial inputs from the consumers. Our goal is to launch these new handsets by the end of 2010. The Mobile Communications industry still has a long long way to go. Just when you think we have reached our ultimate milestones, we realize that there is much more room to grow. When 2G emerged, we had to look forward for better data handling and sharing. Now, decades later, we’re ready to go 4G, and we will have our phones ready to meet this challenge. Nokia affirms its commitment to bring to the market the best in communication facilities and of course, phones. And with you, our partners ensuring that we meet our common goals and overcome common obstacles, we are confident that we will continue to move forward. With this, let me take this opportunity to welcome you all to this annual event. Truly, the mobile business is a growing industry and meeting you all in this annual event is something we at Nokia always look forward to.
