Introduction Computer networking is a collection of hardware devices and computer systems that are linked together through various communication channels to promote resource sharing and communication among a wide range of users. There are various network types and technologies that are often utilized in organizations to connect users so that they may be able to share information that is important for organizational performance. The paper is an applied communication paper aimed at explaining computer networking design for laboratory office complex.

The paper will focus on bus topology and use of 100BASE-tx technology in designing a computer network for the laboratory. The paper will also explain the various advantages and disadvantages of designing a computer network by utilizing bus topology (BENNETT & OWEN, 2010). 2. BackgroundOne of the oldest examples of computer networking was compute network system which functioned as part of the United States military’s semi automatic ground environment radar systems. However, in 1969, various institutions such as the Stanford Research institute and the university of California initiated computer connections inform of agency project network that later evolved to form the internet.

Various types of computer networks have emerged since then including local area connection, home area connections, wide area connection and personal area connection. Various computer networks have been designed to enable file sharing, enable multiplier users to share a single hardware device as well as to facilitate video conferencing and instant messaging (Wilbur, 2010). 3. The total number of machines to be networked, this includes allhardware such as PC’s, switches, hubs, printers. The laboratory office complex will be made up of a connection of various end systems and devices such as servers and computers that will be connected with each other to facilitate communication within the organization.

Networks carry data within large enterprises, small businesses and homes. Our computer network will cover only a small area. The main office will have several computers and several connected networks with the aim of serving a huge number of people. The network will cover the laboratory office complex with a remote fictional site. The network system will have personal computers, interconnections, switches and routers. Personal computers will serve as the network endpoints with a purpose of receiving and sending data.

The interconnections will be made up components that will offer means for data to be moved from one point in the network to another point within the network. Various categories will be placed under computer interconnection such as wireless media and cables that will offer a mean of transferring signals from one point of the media to the next. The interconnection system will also have connectors and the network interface cards which will translate the information produced by the computers into a form that can be moved over the local network.

In addition, Routers will be utilized to connect network within the system with switches providing network attachment to the intelligent switching and end system of the data within the local network. Our laboratory complex will comprise of four personal computers in each of the three halls, Hall A, B and C. the staff offices will contain two personal computers each. The administrative offices will have two personal computers with room I having the main internet feeds up to 100 baseT. The laboratory complex will be fitted with ten hubs and eight switches (BENNETT & OWEN, 2010). 4. Choose a physical network topology (ie bus, star, ring, hybrid etc) and technology (ie 10base2, 10/100baseT, fibre, hybrid etc) with reference to the relevant IEEE standardsThe design of the laboratory complex will be made up of a bus network.

A bus network is a form of a network design in which the local area network (LAN) in which each device is connected to the link or main cable that is known as a bus. The bus network will have several nodes that will be connected to a horizontal central line. The bus often appears as a horizontal line with vertical line connections (Bernstein & Yuhas, 2010). The illustration below shows a bus network and how it will be connected to a central line.HALL AHALL B HALL CA bus network is often reliable and simple.

If a certain node in the connection fails to operate other nodes will be able to function appropriately. For the major interruption to take place a main bus network or the horizontal line must be broken or disrupted. Bus network always offer an additional room for expansion. The halls A, B and C can be extended to D and beyond if the nodes are well arranged. However, the bus network may function most appropriately in situations where the nodes are situated at scattered points or far away from the common line.

Bus topology is a simple computer network that will entails connecting servers and computers to a single bus with the assistance of interface connectors. Every network station in the laboratory will be able to communicate with each other through the bus network. A signal from the source is transferred to all other networks through a cable (Lafata & Vodrazka, 2011). The message can only be transferred to a recipient whose IP address and MAC address matches. The machine will discard the signal if the address machine doesn’t match with the intended address.

At the end of the central cable, a terminator will be placed to help prevent bouncing signals. A barrel connector will be utilized to extend the network. The network will utilize 100 BASE TX that is the main form of fast Ethernet that runs above five cables. The active connections that will be indentified in the standard connection will be terminated on pin, 1, 2, 3 and six. There exist three types of physical wiring that can be utilized to carry signals. They include 100BASE-FX, 100BASE-TX and 100BASE-T4.

The 100BASE-FX is a two strand optical fiber cable; the 100BASE-TX is a two pair of data grade twisted pair wire while the 100BASE-T4 is a four pair of telephone twisted pair wire. The transmission speed of this type data is 100 megabits per seconds. It is a network technology that supports high data transmission rates of over a hundred megabits per second. It is based on the old Ethernet standard and is 10 times more than it. Its official standard is IEEE 802.3u. It is a shared media local area network.

All the nodes that will be connected to the horizontal line will be able to share 100 megabit per second of data. It utilizes the CD/CSMA access method with some minor differences in the manner in which the overall system is able to operate (Molle & Watson, 2008). 5. Design the bus topologyThe laboratory complex will comprise of eight personal computers in three halls, Hall A, B and C. the staff offices will contain two personal computers each. The administrative offices will have two personal computers with room I having the main internet feeds up to 100 baseT.

The laboratory complex will be fitted with ten hubs and eight switches. The laboratory complex will be supplied by a bus topography utilizing a 100 base-TX that is considered as the fastest Ethernet with data moving at a hundred megabits per second. The technology will entail connecting nodes of severs and the personal computer systems to a horizontal line by utilizing a patch cable of 100BASE-TX that is considered a faster Ethernet. The terminator will be the end point of each segment. The personal computers, the servers, printers and switches will be connected to each a manner that will allow effective communication and transfer of data within the stipulated system (Molle & Watson, 2008).

The bus technology will be effective within the laboratory complex. The advantage of the system is that disruption of any vertical cable will not affect other connections to the server or the personal computer and workstation. Utilization of media access control for example the carrier sense multiplier access will be effective for the nodes to transmit in the same cable simultaneously. The design team will take into considerations factors such as machines being capable of sharing files with each other.

The traffic in each of the halls should also be isolated from one another. The type of topology utilized in the design will allow future expansion through extending the terminator. Each office in the design can have its own printer with the connections on the printer ports that will be crated and attached to the central line (Lafata & Vodrazka, 2011). Workstation Workstation Laptop Laptop Terminator Horizontal line laser printer Laptop server Server 6.

Explain why you have chosen the topology and technology for your DesignThe reason for choosing the bus network is because of its reliability. The bus network can be set up easily as well as being extended to cover a large area. The design of the complex has also made it easier to choose the network. The halls are arranged in rectangular manner making it easier to establish a horizontal line with vertical connections. The length of the cable that is needed for a horizontal connection is less compared to any other network such as star or ring topology.

The cost of bus topology is less and it is often utilized in smaller networks. It is also considered the best for local area networks. The reason for choosing 100BASE-TX is a fast form of Ethernet technology (Molle & Watson, 2010). The technology allows data to move at very high speed between the cables leading for faster exchange of data among the individuals that are connected. The technology makes it possible to built network technologies that hierarchical in manner. In addition, the technology is compatible with numerous wiring strategies.

Fast Ethernet or 100BASE-TX is suitable for streaming multi-media, video and other high speed intensive network applications. The technology permits increased bandwidth performance that can be integrated into the existing technology such as the 10base-T. 7. Describe your design including any advantages and/or DisadvantagesThe design is a local area connection with computers, servers, printers and other machines connected through a bus topology. The advantage of the bus topology is design is that its cost is less compared to other topology such as star and the ring topology.

Bus topology is also important for local area network as well as the less number of personal computers that have been connected towards it. In addition, the cable length required to connect the machines in the system are the least compared to the other topologies. Moreover, bus topology is considered easier to set up and may be extended easily (Lafata & Vodrazka, 2011). However, the design is also associated with numerous disadvantages that includes the limits on the number of nodes and central cable length which is to be connected.

The network depends on the central horizontal cable meaning that any damage targeting this cable by result to total failure on the exchange of the data and information. Terminators are supposed to be used to dumb signal with maintenance cost getting higher with time. The network may not be suitable for heavy traffic and the efficiency of the bus declines as the number of machines added to the network is increased. The use of the 100base-TX will help increase the speed of sharing data from one computer to the other. 8. Using the Internet as the communication medium between both sites; Describe communications across the Internet between the two Sites Computers often communicate with each other through utilization of the transmission control protocol or internet protocol.

These can be suitable only through network connections. The internet protocol allows each computer to identify another computer that is located on the network and share files and making it possible to share the files on the network. Local area connection takes place when the machines are connected to each other across the same network. The connection of the laboratory complex is a local area connection that entailed connection the machines to a central horizontal lines and allow sharing of files among the computers that are involved.

Wide area connection is a situation where increased number of computers is connected to each other. In such network connections, the home office is often given a network router which connects to the internet service providers. The router is often offered the IP address for local connections to the internet that is later connected to the various devices within the local area connections. The local address given is usually between 192.168.1.2-255 (Liu & Liu, 2014). The router often sends internet protocol packets between the local internet protocol addresses while accessing a local computer of their own.

The router often communicates to the internet in the machine with the internet protocol address that is assigned from the internet service providers. While requesting certain information from the web, the personal computers usually connects to the router using the internet protocol and requests for the local internet protocol address. The second procedure entails the router responding and giving the computer the internet protocol address such as 192.168.1.12. This is followed by the router requesting for an internet protocol address to enable it connect to the internet.

The internet service provider assigns the wide area network address as 175.51.127.17(Liu & Liu, 2014).The user access the computer through utilizing the available URL. The address is then translated to an internet protocol address of 69.72.169.241 and the internet protocol packet travels over many computers and routers hoping until the address are arrived at. The internet protocol packet often arrives at its destination and communicates with the other computer with an intention of repeating and responding to send back the data to the computer of the user.

Currently, all the computers that are utilizing apple OS, windows OS and Linux OS all make use of the internet protocol to connect to various other computers on the wide area network and local area network. Connections to the wider area network and local area network require either a wireless connection or the wired connections. A wired connection utilizes network cables while a wireless connection is performed using 802.11g, 802.11b and 802.11n wireless connection cards. With either connection types, a network router is needed to connect to the various computers found in a network.

Internet connection at home requires either DSL modem or cable modem, depending on which internet service provider an individual uses (Hunter, 2009). 9. What technologies are available and why are they best suited for efficient communications between the two sites Network technologies enable two or more computers in a network to connect with each other. The types of these technologies include wireless area network, the local area network and the internet via Bluetooth and client’s servers. A computer network often exist in areas where 2 or more computers are combined together to share information or software and hardware resources.

The approach may help facilitate human to human communication, alternative working practices such as teleworking and e-business. A local area connection often connects two or more computers through the Ethernet cables. The approach is considered one of the most network type as a result of its stability, performance and reliability. Local area network allows computers in the network to communicate with each other by sharing data and files as long as the computers are able to access each other (Wilbur, 2010).

A local area network technology can also utilize an external internet connection and distributes to all other networks and computers making it possible to pull outside the local network. Wireless area network technology has the same functions of connection machines on an office or home network as a local area network but ends up distributing the signals in a wise manner. A wireless connection often allows computers, smart phones, tablets and computers that are compatible to connect with other.

A wireless connection is often utilized at homes to allow internet connection. Wi-Fi hotspots located at local shops are examples of wide area connections with a mandate of distributing the internet to their patrons. The internet is considered the most common utilized network technology with billion of people utilizing it around the world. The internet often connects the server of the provider to the intended clients. The client server often hosts the website which then delivers to web page to the browser of the computer.

Bluetooth technology is considered the latest technology that wirelessly connects devices to accessories, such as Bluetooth headset which allow hand free- talks on the machines. Bluetooth technology is also effective in development of personal area network that allows connection of up to eight computers to the systems. The seven auxiliary computers are known as slaves with the central computer identified as the master. A slave computer should be able to connect with the master computer in order to access the personal area network or to receive data from any other slave computers (Hunter, 2009). 10. Conclusion Based on the various benefits of computer networks such as making it easier to access information, enabling file sharing across networks, allowing software sharing, enabling multiple users to share a single hardware such as a scanner and printer as well as facilitating communication through video conferencing and instant messaging, designing an effective computer network will be of benefit to the laboratory office complex.

The bus topology design is reliable, easier to set and can be extended be extended easily to cover a large area. It is therefore suitable for the laboratory complex given the less number of personal computers, printers, hubs and switches (BENNETT & OWEN, 2010). Additionally, the utilization of the 100BASE-TX allows data to move at very high speed between the cables leading for faster exchange of data among the individuals that are connected. The use of both the 100BASE-tx technology and the bus topology for the laboratory complex will make it more efficient and cost effective. 11. References BENNETT, D.
