Food/Beverage People Love to Hate Food/Beverage People Love to Hate Introduction Around the world, there have been somefood and beverage brands that have been able to conquer test of time, remain at top, and continue to be loved all over. Some of these food and beverages have gone changes in their nutritional components to make sure that they are healthier, while others have undergone changes in packaging and or total rebranding. The paper seeks to discuss five of the brands that people love to hate.

Spam has become one of the most consumed foods in not only America, but also over 41 other countries around the world. It is a precooked canned meat by Hormel’s Food Corporation. Spam foods have over 15 different flavors and parked in different weights. It has become part of the major American meal that has been given a name mystery meat and has been popular with pop culture. In 2007, the company saw the sale of spam-canned food reaching 7 billion cans all over the world. Most of the food that is sold in North America, South America, and Australia is produced in Austin Minnesota.

The success of spam foods has been tremendous that has seen them coming up with spam medium in Austin. Invented in 1930 in river forest Illinois by James Alexander Dewar, Twinkies have been favorite for many but also has had a history. The first Twinkies were made of banana, which later changed to vanilla cream during World War 2 when banana became rationed. In the year 2005 during the promotion of the movie, King Kong, the sale for Twinkie increased by 20%. Due to people’s awareness on their health, the sale of Twinkies reduced and by the year 2012, Twinkie production in the US was terminated.

According to Staff and Wire reports in 2013, Apollo Global Management and Metropolis Company, which saw the reintroduction of Twinkies, purchased the company brands. Twinkies have long shelved life and have been nicknamed the cockroach of the snack food (Maria, 2013) as it is rumored to last for even more than three months Fig Newton is a snack that was first made by Kennedy biscuit factory in the year 1891. Over all the rich history of over 100 years, the shape, taste, and size have not changed (Andrew, 2012).

Kennedy biscuit then merged with other bakers to form Nabisco, which currently are the maker of newton, which is a pastry, filled with fig paste. Over the years, Nabisco has diversified into other newton brand to include raspberry, strawberry, and mixed berry. Ever since their production, the cookie has undergone changes to make it even better. They have incorporated fat free newtons and 100% whole grains that have seen the demand and popularity of Fig Newton and newton increasing over the century that they have been in the market.

Tang is a fruit-flavored drink formulated in 1957 by William Mitchell. Although at first the sales were poor, the sales and demand changed after NASA used it in John Glenn mercury flight in 1962 (Pearlman, 2006). This incident helped the tang drink as it developed a misconception that it was designed for space exploration. It is sold in both powder and ready to drink form. The drink is reach in calories, vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, and does not contain caffeine (Turner, 2001). However, Jason, David, and Nathan (2009) pointed out that this drink lack any natural fruit and linked the soft drink with adolescent obesity.

It is also linked with popular culture of anime neon genesis evangelion as there is a lot of resemblance with the liquid used. To make it more affordable, the company has repackaged it into smaller packs. According to Team (2012), tang is one of the billion-dollar brands under Kraft and its growth continues to show strength.Ovaltine on the other hand originated from Berne Switzerland and by 1909, it was exported to Britain. By 1915, there were factories in US, which were producing ovaltine for American market.

The ingredients have changed from egg milk and malt to incorporate others, leading to several formulas that are sold around the world. Its incorporation in popular culture has helped it to grow and become popular. Singers, songwriters, novels, short stories, among others have mentioned it. Its popularity in American market, where Nestle, Britain, produces it among other markets, has made it to remain one of the most famous foods and drink brand around the world. Although it is famous, Thessa (2007) recommends reduction of malted milk such as ovaltine in the effort to curb celiac diseases.

ConclusionMany kinds of food that have become world-renowned brands have a history and were first processed many years ago. Through rebranding or sale to other competing firms, the brands have been able to successfully sustain test of time and economic hardship. Others have undergone changes to make them compliable to the current worldwide changes of people’s realization of the importance of better health and proper nutrition.. ReferencesAndrew, A. N.
