Disaster management and reductions are some of the key factors of the country’s success in economic development and general prosperity. This is after it had been realized that natural disasters have severe effects on the infrastructure and key sectors of the economy. During disasters, key infrastructure such as roads and communication networks are destroyed forcing the respective governments to embark on reconstruction which in many cases cost billions of money. Sometimes natural disasters are associated with direct displacement of people and cost some of their lives.

The effect of the disaster depends on the magnitude of the disaster. When disaster is looked at from the aspect of economic development, environmental degradation, climatic change, and human interference as well as security concerns, it becomes one of the sensitive global issues in the 21st century. This, therefore, demands that a detailed disaster management package be designed to see what effects are related to disasters are reduced significantly (Haddow 2003). This implies the involvement of all the key stakeholders including the community in joining efforts to manage disasters.

The communities that are at risk are expected to be included in the disaster management process which includes planning, prevention, reduction, readiness and response as well as recovery. It is the responsibility of the general community to take an initiative to rescue their colleagues who are victims of disasters. World over every year several people die as a result of disaster-related effects. Countries like the United States, Japan, and Australia are some of the countries that have had the worst disasters in recent times.

In 2011, for example, Japan was hit by a tsunami where several people lost their lives while property worth a lot of billions was destroyed. However, it’s recognizable that with proper strategies in place, the effects of disasters can be managed. The world society's capabilities need to be enhanced in order to address this challenge (Altay & Ramirez 2010).
