Name] [Student Number] Chinese Restaurant [Business problem] Poor Time Keeping Among Reliable Staff Members [Date of submission] [Tutor] Semester 2, 2012 Word Count: 1,413 Introduction Employees in any given organization encounter certain problems during their daily execution of their duties and responsibilities. Employee problems occur both at the multinational, national and regional levels of any business entity. These problems may occur as a result of poor management or lack of responsibility on the part of the individual employee. Hence it is the duty of both the managers and employees to work as a team for the success of the any business. Therefore this report will focus on the problem faced by the staff members in the Chinese Restaurant, develop a theoretical framework in relation to the identified problem and also make recommendations. Furthermore the report seeks to expound on the environmental or external factors and their impact on Chinese Restaurant and other business entities (Rosner & Halcrow 2010).  Problem analysis Time keeping among the staff members poses as a major problem facing a large number of managers. Lack of time keeping leads to low productivity. In regards to the Chinese restaurant where by majority of customers require faster and reliable services to be offered to them. Hence time keeping is essential as far as the business is concerned. Thus, lack of proper time keeping leads to the business to lose in terms of customers and also financially. The Chinese restaurant might be facing the stated problem due to lack of employee motivation that leads to low morale at the work place. Poor supervision may also be the cause of the problem being experienced hence leading reliable employees reporting to work late. The managers might be aware of the existing problem but choose not to address it hence the problem continues as there is no penalty for the problem experienced. Thus the problem may persist due to manager’s reluctance to act (Brounstein, 1993).  Theoretical Framework Leadership Theory In any business organization leadership plays a crucial role in as far as the success of the business is concerned. According to Beerel (2009), it views leadership as a process or relations that consists personality features as well as definite behaviour which are normally referred to as leadership skills which is crucial in the management of any business entity. Thus leadership theory argues that leadership is a process that involves the ability of managers to influence a group of people in this regard staff members towards the realization of the set goals and objectives in the Chinese restaurant. This theory assumes that individuals are born with exceptional potentials that incline them to realization in leadership roles. The theory also argues that certain abilities are learned or attained through learning that is vital in leadership performance. Thus leadership as a process increases motivation and morality to both the followers and leaders (Beerel, 2009). For this reason this theory sets to tackle the problem of lack of time keeping which leads to laziness in the Chinese hence low levels of productivity and customer dissatisfaction. Managers play a crucial role in management thus ensuring that the success of any business is realized. Through influencing the staff members to work towards the realization of the set goals and objectives laziness is condemned while hard work is encouraged. For that reason leadership plays an important role in the motivation of staff members to work hard so as to achieve the set goals. Thus good leadership will enable the Chinese restaurant to eradicate the problem of lack of time keeping and laziness (Corrigan 1999).  Planning Theory This theory argues that in order for business organizations and managers to operate efficiently planning is crucial. According to Drucker & Maciariello (2008) planning theory centers on the forecasting procedure itself and how it can be applied successfully to aid individuals or staff members to identify their needs, ways to achieve them and the reasons for achieving such goals. Furthermore planning theory emphasizes on institutional interconnections of scheduling practices from the highest hierarchy to the lowest. Thus planning theory emphasizes that in order to successfully manage a certain business enterprise planning is essential so as to achieve the set goals and objectives. The planning process is essential method of making coherent assessments hence moving the organization into optimization. For this reason, planning theory does not revolve around philosophy, sociology or political endeavor but rather it is a methodology. Thus planning theory is viewed as a theory that considers the reasonable and operational structure of the planning system anticipated as a rational means of decision and choice. Planning theory is mostly involved in investigating and presenting what is fundamental to appropriately make a decision and take actions. As a result management planning entails the organization making rational choices concerning their future need and thereby generating plans of action (Drucker & Maciariello 2008).  In regards to the Chinese Restaurant this theory is applicable since in order to solve the problem of reliable staff members’ lack of time keeping and lateness, the business needs to articulate its goals and objectives clearly. Hence planning theory will enable members of staff to plan and manage both their present and future time well. Planning will therefore instill discipline among the staff members since every activity will run according to the scheduled time and in the process avoid wasting a lot of valuable time by the staff members. The Chinese management needs to redefine the duties and responsibilities of the employees so as to achieve the organization’s present and future needs. It is therefore important to note that the Chinese Restaurant lacks proper planning hence the reason for experiencing the stated problem. Hence planning is crucial for the success of any business enterprise. Environmental Factors Epstein (2008) argues that it is important to note that environmental analysis plays a very crucial role in any business enterprise. Hence environmental factors consists of external forces that impact on a business both positively and negatively. These factors comprise of socio-cultural, economic and legal aspects that shape the productivity of any business. Economic factors such as economic growth, unemployment, inflation and consumer and investor confidence plays a vital role in any business enterprise success. Political climate which involves the amount and rate of government activity, political stability and risk are factors that have an impact on the productivity of any business enterprise. In situations where political instability is experienced businesses will not flourish due to high amount of risks involved. Legal aspects of minimum wage laws, union laws, and employee safety laws and anti monopoly laws impact heavily on any business enterprise and its success. Socio cultural laws such as literacy levels ethnic origins, religious affiliations, norms and belief systems also pose as a challenge to majority of business enterprises especially the multinational organizations. Hence environmental or external factors are vital for the success of any business entity (Epstein 2008).  Conclusion In regards to the Chinese restaurant whereby reliable employees reported for work late hence poor time keeping skill, lack of planning and leadership led to the occurrence of such problem. Hence the planning and leadership theories best explains why the problem was experienced and how best the problem can be solved. It is due to lack of motivation for the employees and lack of supervision that ignited such a problem. The management team of the restaurant was probably reluctant to come up with sanctions for poor time keeps which led to the problem being rampant. Planning generally gives direction to any business entity and enables the employees to adhere to specific goals and objectives within a given time frame for the success of the business. Recommendations Leadership and planning are essential for the success of any business enterprise. Excellent leadership skills lead to reliable managers in business. Proper planning enables the employees to be efficient hence attain the organization’s set goals and objectives. Employee’s problems arise due to lack of proper planning and leadership hence such problems need to be addressed by the management team so as to ensure that disgruntled workers achieve satisfaction. Thus good leadership is key for the success an organization. Managers also need to develop a system whereby hardworking employees are rewarded while the lazy ones are given sanctions so as to improve their work performance. A good planning system leads to an organization to realize its set goals and objectives. As a result leadership and planning go hand in hand for realization of objectives of any business, customer satisfaction and employee satisfaction. Satisfaction of employees leads to high productivity in business (Rosner & Halcrow, 2010).  References Beerel, A. C. (2009). Leadership and change management. Los Angeles: SAGE.
