Self-Assessment Learning to be a manager is one of the greatest things that I have engaged myself in. As I do this program, my MHR emphasis is management, especially in the entertainment industry. What I would like to gain the most in is the management aspect of the training. This is because I believe that this should help me a lot in succeeding in my dream career in the future. My dream career is to be a manager, especially in an entertainment organization. Doing so will require me to have good management skills and to be able to coordinate things. Talent Acquisition Manager One of the target jobs that I am interested right after graduation is the Talent Acquisition Manager. Because my interest is in the entrainment industry, this is going to be very important for me since in the entertainment industry talent is a critical factor. For instance, using record companies engage a lot in finding the right talent to include in their organization. As Honthaner (59) says, those that are able to recruit the best talent, even before the talent is noticed by other people or even the public plays have the best chances of meeting the going concern for their business. It is therefore imperative that as a manger in an entertainment organization, I will need to have the right skills and competencies for Talent Acquisition Manager. I have done research on what it would require me to be able to succeed in this area and I have seen that I have most of the requirements, especially the non academic requirements that are needed to make a good Talent Acquisition Manager. For instance, one of the skills that may be needed for this job is the ability to plan, prioritize as well as to organize processes. With this regard, I feel that I have what it takes because as I identified in my self assessment, I am a well organized person and a perfectionist who likes to meticulously organize things and I like things to happen in a certain way as opposed to in a haphazard way. The other skill that is required for this job is the ability to communicate effectively with recruitment managers about talent. This is because there has to be a clear way of communication to avoid confusion. As has been identified, for any entertainment firm, the strategy for success is hinged on its ability to recruit the right talent at the right time. This is however never an easy thing to do and therefore clear communication is a way to avoid bottlenecks. For instance, with regard to this, I have very good communication skills as identified in my self assessment. Communication with other people is never a problem for me and the fact that I have experienced many cultures having been brought up in China and now attending my education in the US means that I am able to relate with different cultures without a problem. The other skill needed for this job is to the ability to discern the qualities of potential talents seeking employment in the firm. In this area, I believe that training I am getting from the current course will be of big aid to me so as to be well equipped in this area. However, from a personal assessment point of view, I might need to seek for better ways to improve myself in this area. However, my ability to interact with people of all descents will be an asset as this makes it possible to know that type of people I am dealing with and therefore I know this will be of great importance. The other skill that I need for this kind of job and which I think will be a big asset is the ability to review, interpret, and recommend solutions based on statistical data. Although I do not have specific training in this area, I believe that I am a quick leaner who is able to learn such things very fast and this may not be a big problem. Moreover, the training I am currently getting will be of use to me in order to develop my competence in this area. Management is really about looking at data ad know what it means and then knowing how to apply this to businesses strategy. The ability to work independently is also another requirement in this job and is required as an asset. Being an independent person who is always able to plan things in his own will therefore come as an asset for me in this area. As an identified in my personal assessment, I am a person who like to get things done and do not wait for other people to do things for me. In this regard, it will be an advantage for me if I was to take this job. Entry map Anyone would appreciate that the entertainment industry is one the most competitive industries and entering there, whether as an entrepreneur or as a manager can be a hard task. This means that there is a need to have a detailed entry plan. It is crucial to know the fact that to get into this industry, it might take years before one gets in the more interesting aspects of this industry. For me, I will use a number of strategies to be able to hack into this industry. These will include; Getting special training There are many short courses that are effective and are recognized in the entertainment industry and which I think if I was to get one it would allow me to be more competent and more qualified for this area. In this case, I intend to take one course that is relevant and that will make it feasible to hack into the entertainment industry. Most of these courses are short time courses and are offered conveniently such as part time or online. I will consider taking one of them in preparation to getting into the industry. Internship and work experience The other strategy will include internships and getting work experience. In this industry, no one will hire a person unless they have a viable work experience. I will therefore be patent and take an internship from a firm so as to develop my portfolio. However, I will need to take an internship from an accomplished firm, regardless of whether it is an unpaid internship. There a number of entertainment firms that offer internships and most of them have what it takes to prepare an aspiring candidate to get into the industry (Weihart). Although the entertainment industry especially in California is the most difficult one to enter, it also is one of the industries that offer useful internship opportunities for beginners. This will help me in my path into this industry. In my search for such internships, I came across one hat I think is the best for me. This internship requires me to answer directly to the CEO. It also requires me to be able to have fast learner which I think will not be a problem for me because I learn quick especially if it’s a hands-on learning environment. The internship also requires me to be able to have a strong interest working with actors. This is also another plus for me because as I identified in the personal assessment, I am very good at interpersonal relationships. This will therefore to be a big problem for me. To be considered for this internship, I also have to well organized, which I also think is not a problem because I know am a very organized person who likes to do things in an organized way and an orderly manner. This internship will help me in making sure that I have gained enough useful skills to be in the entertainment industry. It is a talent management internship and I know that this is a good place to start for anyone who wants to be in any part of the entertainment industry whether he or she wants to manage a whole firm or just individual artists. The fact that the firm that is offering the internship is in the film industry also means that it is in the centre of the entertainment industry and this is very important for me. Co-curricular activities Anyone who intends to get into the this industry must on top of understanding that this is a highly competitive industry also note that this an industry where ones work is affected by the way they are able to relate with other people in the industry outside of work environment. Attending social events such as parties and forums are therefore some of the ways in which one can develop his portfolio and get to not only meet a lot of people but also to learn a lot in the trade. In this regard, I am continually attending forums and trade fairs that are related to the entertainment industry. I will therefore continue engaging in these activities not only because they are necessary for me as an aspirant for the entertainment industry but also because it is also a fun thing to do for me.
