Principal Management Practice (Portfolio) Executive Summary Adopting relevant principles of management has helped me to enhance my leadership and team skills. With the motivational strategies and principle of management, I learnt about values, beliefs, ethics, team skills and leadership qualities, which I possessed along with those required to be improved, as discussed in the classroom and workshop. To make the learning more attractive, the course focused on using themes, such as problem solving techniques and decision-making processes applied in the current day context. The results obtained also indicate that in order to improve team skills and management principles among students, group assignments can become a virtuous mode of learning that has been enhancing inter-personal communications and coordination among students. Observably, group assignments were identified as an important medium for improving values, ethics and beliefs about cultures and traditions. In addition, group assignments were observed to enhance leadership quality among students and avoid misunderstandings or conflicts with teams. Principle of management was therewith proven effective for group assignments, especially for me when obtaining a better understanding and knowledge regarding leadership and team skills. In accordance, I developed learning logs related to my learning from this coursework and reflecting on my future development needs, elaborating on my knowledge management approach. As I could observe, the personal development plan is also an important tool, which will help me to enhance my knowledge base as well as those of my fellow students. Accordingly, I noted that group assignment and personal development plan will help me in developing my knowledge concerning management principle, such as leadership and team skills. The term ‘management’ refers to planning, organising, motivating and managing resources of an organisation in an effective manner as cited by Hughes (2013) (refer to appendix 1). It is owing to its multifaceted nature that business leaders have been developing varied strategies to improve management functions within organisations. According to Hughes (2013), with the help of management principles, business leaders are identified to be effectively managing resources and improving productivity for future growth. Leadership as well as decision-making is another significant facet of management principle. With the help of these qualities, business leaders can implement strategies for future growth. Contextually, management could be regarded as a fourth factor of production alone with land, labour, and capital as cited in Hughes (2013). Moreover, management principles will be an important consideration for improving my team skills among group members. From the learning log based on APP (1, 3, 5 and 8) (refer to appendix 3), I will be able to improve my knowledge base and time management skills, which will be effective in developing my professional life (Janet, 2006). With this regard, this assignment paper intends to discuss about various management principles and their impact on my performance in my personal as well as professional life. This paper also reflects on my leadership and decision-making qualities, which have helped me to improve my overall performance and knowledge level. Principles of Management Productivity of an organisation depends largely on the management of valid knowledge relating to the styles of management (Lai, 2001). Lai (2001) argued that with the help of accurate knowledge, management would be able to take logical decisions, which will enhance the productivity of an organisation in future. In the field of management, knowledge has been playing an essential role. With the help of proper knowledge, business leaders have the opportunity to form strategies and improved employee’s performance for the betterment of an organisation. In this context, I will be able to gather substantial knowledge from various sources such as educational tours, working in-group projects, taking part in quiz competitions and others. Moreover, knowledge can be both tactical as well as explicit, depending on various aspects. Contextually, knowledge and information are different entities and have own relevance for the students, which has also been agreed by Lai (2001). Management knowledge will help me in enhancing my decision-making process with regard to management leaders efficiently, as I will be able to analyse as well as decide the learning and writing styles from learning log based on APP (2, 4 and 7) (refer to appendix 3) for building a better competitive career. With the help of accessible knowledge, I can improve my skills for effective management. Principle of effective management suggests various strategies to improve leadership quality within me based on proper planning and coordination. Therefore, management knowledge will increase and help me to improve my creative thinking. For that reason, from the learning logs, I will be able to gain knowledge and enhance my creativity. In recent scenario, knowledge has been segregated under two categories such as theoretical and technical knowledge. These two types of knowledge have improvised information level about management and competency level within business leaders (Moshal, 2009). Knowledge can be acquired by sharing information with others (Martin, 2007; Rodrigues, 2001). With the help of innovation and technical gadgets, I will be able to share information among peer groups. This will help in developing a new way of gathering and utilizing knowledge. For instance, with the help of internet access, I will be able to update myself about learning and writing styles from learning log based on APP (2) (refer to appendix 3) essential in the present job market. Management functions such as controlling, organising and monitoring will prove helpful in my learning period. With the help of these skills, I will develop a strong base about management knowledge. Managerial team has been identified to be improving their work performance through updated knowledge. With the help of proper knowledge, managerial leaders can make good decision, which has improved employees’ productivity and resolve departmental inter and intra conflicts. With the help of group study, I will be able to improve my team skills. Hence, group study is seemed to increase coordination and understanding levels among group members and me. For instance, during exam time, my friends and I will undertake group studies, which will help us to learn quickly and additionally, obtain a critical view of the concerned issue. Similarly, to reinforce team skill among work group, managerial heads have to provide a friendly atmosphere and counselling services to solve inter and intra conflicts. With the use of management principles, a managerial head can improve leadership qualities as well as improve team skills. Respectively, during group studies, I will divide educational tasks among each other to improve our knowledge base. In this way, leadership quality and team-working skills will be developed in me. Moreover, evaluation process is another form of improving team skills. Every business leader needs to achieve organisational goals and objectives. Through proper planning, organising, motivating and controlling skills, I will be able to improve individual performance and develop my goals and objectives suitably. In addition, before exams, I used to prepare a chart and according to the chart, I used to study my subjects in a systematic manner. This way, management skill has improved my planning, organising, motivating and controlling skills. The need to achieve desired goal will help me in developing my leadership quality. To achieve goals and objectives, I will acquire knowledge on a regular basis. I will evaluate the importance of knowledge in determining the mission, values as well as strategic priorities, wherein, with the help of problem-solving and decision-making skill, teachers can improve students’ knowledge base (McKimm & Philips, 2009). Before exam time, I used to be very de-motivated due to extra pressure of studies and accordingly, my teachers planned to assist me in developing decision-making and problem-solving skills. This will help me a lot, which in turn will also aid in enhancing my motivation level from learning log based on APP (1 and 4) (refer to appendix 3). Managing is an important aspect associated with human activities. Respectively, management are entrusted with the role of playing important role towards managing as well as coordinating operations. In this regard, management practices have been a significant consideration with the assistance of which sustainability can be ensured (Olum, 2004). Accordingly, I will learn that managing is an important skill for staffing, planning as well as controlling individuals to performing activities in group. In addition, I will been able to perform my assigned tasks in different learning styles as well as approaches from learning log based on APP (4) (refer to appendix 3) that include improving my reflector, theorist and pragmatist learning style. For instance, working in group will aid me to work as an activist, as I will be able to have a better understanding about my strengths as well as weaknesses while performing group assignments. Skills/Qualities/Competencies Associated With These Principles Through proper application of knowledge, I can review my overall performance accurately. At the time of reviewing, I will be considering three functional areas such as operations, performance, and finance and budgetary control. This review function is also known as a reflection process. The stages like monitoring progress, evaluating and re-assessing goals are known as skills of reflection. This reflection process has been used in management practices also. Monitoring progress refers to monitoring individual progress against the goals that have been set by an organisation in the beginning for better performance. All these steps and skills will help me to enhance my actions and decision-making capabilities. For instance, through the reflection stages, I will easily identify my weaker as well as stronger sides. Reflection tools will also help me to enhance my skills and mitigate my weaknesses. With the help of evaluating and re-assessing goals, an organisation have been modifying or adjusting human resource management practices for meeting employees’ personal needs and objectives. This will enhance my learning process to a considerable extent (Power, 2013). Based on the reflection tools and with the knowledge of different management principles comprising planning, managing, leading and organising among others are deemed effective in enhancing my communication, learning and writing capabilities. In addition, based on the learning log APP (1) (refer to appendix 3), I will be able to develop my critical thinking as well as decision making abilities, which will immensely aid in doing my assignments on the basis of requirements. Through reflection process, I have identified that my reading skill is low than writing. To improve my reading skills, I have planned to read various kinds of informative books and journals for enhancing my knowledge base. Reflection learning is a valuable tool in monitoring organisational learning and development. In this process, feedbacks from internal and external sources help in improving practices of an organisation. To respond on the same effectively, I have planned to strategize my actions in an effective manner. Therefore, after getting feedback from my tutor, I have planned to improve my reading skill for improving my knowledge base. Moreover, managerial leaders have recollected and analysed significant learning events for employees to show transfer of knowledge in practice. In a similar way, to evaluate student performance throughout the year, professors revise their learning practice records. In every educational institute to check student knowledge base, tutors have arranged exams in a quarterly basis. At the end of semesters, tutors revised every student’s performance to know about their improvement level. The reflection practice is based on three levels such as active, reactive and evaluative. The active reflection has provided current action to managerial heads referring to educational institution heads. In the evaluative reflection process, educational institutes’ heads team has identified a gap in my activity/action. Evaluation reflection is a conscious exercise, which attempts to make connections and draw conclusion from available information. These processes will help in analysing my actions appropriately and gain adequate knowledge on a regular basis for continuous evaluation. For instance, through reflection on evaluation stages, I can easily know my reading skills improvement status. In this regard, I have planned to go through Improving Learning Styles booklets based on learning log of APP (4) (refer to appendix 3), which will assist me in developing my learning styles to a large extent. The Context in Which Development Is Taking Place Nowadays, most of educational institutes have used reflection tool for evaluating students’ performance. For proper evaluation of students’ performance, educational institutes have used learning logs. These learning logs comprise a single sheet for employee experience. This single sheet is a reflection of employees’ performance. With the help of learning logs, managerial heads have evaluated employees’ past performances. In addition, communications tools such as electronic data, journal, and gadgets will assist in improving my communication and decision-making skills largely (Power, 2013). In this respect, with the assistance of technical knowledge such as electronic data, journal and gadgets, educational operations can be conducted in a coordinated manner by developing an effective relationship between tutors and students. I have made an initiative to read selective materials that include journals, class materials and books, which has also raised my reading capability. The initiative of mine based on management principles will also assist me in doing my class assignments as well as projects in an effective and time efficient manner. In addition, through learning log based on APP (5 and 8) (refer to appendix 3), I will be able to develop note taking and presentation skills, which will further enhance my reflective approach for developing my personal as well as professional competencies. Knowledge management is based on relationship building. It will help me to create a strong bond with my peers. For instance, with the help of strong knowledge base, I will be able to help my friends in their learning requirements. The reflection tool will help me to improve my knowledge level as compared to other individuals and groups. For instance, I am very poor in science theories. With the help of the evaluation process, I will be able to enhance my reading skills, as those have improved my knowledge base of science. I thus now believe that I will be able to answer any question quicker than my peer groups. To improve my personal competency, management strategies and principles will play a major role in having a better understanding about the aspects based on which, business operations are needed to be conducted. With the help of reflection knowledge, professors will also be able to help me to enhance my performance (Gamage & Pang, 2003). I have also planned to enhance my knowledge management skills in the domain of writing styles as well as approaches. To improve my writing skills, I will implement the ACE model from the learning log number (7) based on APP (refer to appendix 3). This model will facilitate me in writing assignments in a unique, consistent and appropriate manner. Subsequently, ACE model is identified to be an effective management tools with the assistance of which I will be able to write assignments in a systematic and analytical way. The model has also enhanced my note taking skills largely. Analysis of Competence in Various Skills In order to improve productivity and team skill of workforce, managerial heads organise meetings with every employee and provide counselling services with the aim of assisting them in improving their performances. From this activity, I will be able to gain relevant knowledge about the fact that motivation and counselling services are important for success in the present competitive job market. To improve my performance level, I need to improve my relationship building abilities. To develop my knowledge, I will have to gain a better understanding about principle of management. Counselling has always proved as an effective step to know students’ perception about education (Mumford & et. al., 2012; Berliner & Calfee, n.d.). Based on the learning log number (1) based on APP (refer to appendix 3), I believe that I will be able to develop my critical thinking and decision making skills being selective in choice of materials those are to be considered for improving my reading as well as writing competencies. In addition, knowledge about management principles will improve my communication skills with the completion of different group assignments. Moreover, the knowledge I will gain through management principles and personal development plans will enhance my presentation as well as assignment briefing competencies. In this respect, I will be able to develop an overall skill set based on which, I intend to be more competitive in my personal as well as professional life. Development of Personal SWOT It has been observed that management functions have increased leadership and team skill among students. For instance, with the help of management functions, I will be able to improve my reading skills as well as knowledge base. I have planned to enhance my management skill and motivation level by gaining adequate knowledge. I will be able to learn about management principle and leadership skills and importance of feedback (Mumford & et. al., 2012). With the help of motivational strategies, educational institutes’ heads are able to enhance students’ knowledge base. On the other side, professors use motivational strategies and management principles for improving my knowledge base and team skills. Group assignments will be a medium for improving my principle of management, team skills and performance (Gamage& Pang, 2003). To improve leadership and team building skills within me, I participated in Class-Based Workshop and Academic Professional Practice Workshop, which will have a positive impact to the learning process. These themes will help me to take relevant actions and gain knowledge accordingly. With the help of principle of management, my leadership skill and team skill will enhance largely. These strategies will also help me to improve my performance level to a better degree. Motivation will also assist me to have a better understanding about educational institutes’ values and beliefs (Fincham, n.d.). The same can be learnt through knowledge-sharing and continuous self-motivation. On the other side, with the help of themes, organising, controlling and motivating strategies, professors are able to improve performance level of students like me. To enhance the performance level of each student, professors have to use strategies and provide knowledge materials. With the help of motivational strategy, professors aim at increasing values, beliefs and ethics within me. It has been seen that most of the student were not aware of the cultural values, beliefs and ethics. Education institutes are the organisations where students like me learn lessons about life and different important values. In this respect, professors are the main source of information and knowledge sharing. On the other side, to improve team skills among students, professors have to provide group assignments to them. Through the group assignments activity, students’ interaction level can increase significantly. Notably, group assignment always enhances inter-personal communication and coordination among students (Elkins, 1980). Similarly, in educational institutes, management heads need to implement strategies to enhance group performance among students (Dalton, 2002). With the help of counselling, educational institutes are able to increase knowledge level of students (Cottrell, 2010). With the help of regular evaluation process, a professor can enhance students’ overall performance level. On the other side, self-evaluation has enhanced my work performance throughout academic life. Moreover, self-evaluation can increase students’ confidence level. In order to develop leadership quality among all students, professors provide reading materials of business leaders and others. Through electronic sources, students not only learn, but also expand their knowledge level. Access to world information has generated a positive impact among students (Adeniyi, 2010; Carpenter & et. al., 2010; Rampersad, 2006). In order to reduce conflict among workforce, a counselling session can prove to be effective as learnt by me through the entire session of knowledge sharing. Counselling session can change and help to develop a friendly relation with others. To increase productivity, I have planned to arrange training and motivation session for improving my performance level. In this way, my productivity can be enhanced with the help of personal development (Armstrong & Stephens, 2005; Sullivan & Wyndham, 2001). The learning logs will be effective in improving my interpretation skills. With the assistance of the development plan, I will be able to enhance my reading skill as well as knowledge base about science (Shanks, n.d.). Group assignments will help me to improve my concept relating to principle of management, knowledge level and interpretation skills; wherein group assignments create a sense of responsibility within me. Accordingly, based on learning logs that include Class-Based Workshop and APP have been an effective mechanism based on which I will enhance my professional life (refer to appendix 3 and 4). Accordingly, I worked in groups to develop my critical thinking abilities. Conclusion Reached I have learnt about critical thinking from Project Management Practices (PMP). During the course, I had discussed and performed class activities in groups. I faced a few complications in terms of communication and participations with every student, as they were from different countries. In this respect, I learnt that developing learning logs is a vital part of critical thinking practice. Conclusion Reached I have gone through different learning styles and I recognised to be an activist. Having knowledge about my learning style helped me to determine my strengths and weaknesses. I have looked at the learning style questionnaire with the aim of enhancing other learning styles. In different class activities, I have ensured confidence within my group. Action/Next steps I ensured to complete the learning styles questionnaire booklet with the intention of calculating my score and develop knowledge about other learning styles. To be critical in my thinking, I planned to mitigate my weaknesses. Learning Log Number: 03 Date: 15-10-2014 Event Title Academic Professional Practice Workshop Description of Title The focus of the workshop was on the time management skills for postgraduate students. Conclusion Reached After the workshop, I learnt about the procedure based on which, I am able to manage my time effectively in different activities. I have also learnt about the aspect that effective planning and organising are important medium for time management. Time is an important consideration in every activity. In this regard, postgraduate students are needed to study for around 168 hours on a weekly basis. In addition, I participated in class and in group discussions in an active manner. Action/Next steps I have planned to follow time log every day and determine my personal time wasters. Accordingly, I have to plan, organise and monitor my tasks, activities or assignments to manage my time appropriately. Learning Log Number: 04 Date: 22-10-2014 Event Title No Workshop Description of Title As there was no workshop, I used this time to read the Improving Learning Styles booklets. Conclusion Reached I have identified my as an activist and thus, I read improving your Reflector, theorist and pragmatist learning style. After having knowledge from the book, I completed the activities in the booklets. I identified my weaknesses for developing my learning style. I have identified a new concept of critical thinking i.e. by reading from different sources for information, which is an essential part of postgraduate study. Action/Next steps I concluded that I need to be innovative in my thinking for building me experiences. I also need to build confidence, spontaneous and interactive. I also need to formulate new techniques with the aim of performing my tasks. I need to develop my reading habits and keep it on regular practice. I also need to be critical in my thinking. Learning Log Number: 05 Date: 29-10-2014 Event Title Academic Professional Practice Workshop Description of Title This week in the APP workshop I learnt about the note taking skills for postgraduate students. Conclusion Reached Note taking skills are significant, as important information from lectures, books and journals can be noted effectively. Notes assist in following and understanding information effectively and briefly. It helps to clarify initial ideas and concepts. It is also identified as a time management skills, as notes help in having record of study materials to be recalled. Action/Next steps I planned to improve my note taking skills by scrutinising information. I need to plan and organise information in a systematic manner. I also plan to listen prudently, understanding concept and writing it. Noting down important parts briefly assists in accessing information successfully in future. I also planned to be selective in noting down information. Learning Log Number: 06 Date: 05-11-2014 Event Title Academic Professional Practice Workshop Description of Title The focus of APP workshop was on the reading skills for postgraduate students. Conclusion Reached Based on reading activity conducted in the class, I have observed to be an average reader. I learnt the procedure to ascertain the procedure for reading and selecting material for reading based on lecture, assignment, meeting, project and task among others. I also learnt various mechanisms for reading books, journals or other reading material critically. Action/Next steps I have planned to be selective in reading for my coming assignments and projects. In case, If I have enormous material to read within short deadline, then I will apply the technique of scanning and selective. I will organise materials essential for the assignment and read critically to be effective. Learning Log Number: 07 Date: 12-11-2014 Event Title Academic Professional Practice Workshop Description of Title The topic of APP workshop was the academic writing skills for postgraduate students. Conclusion Reached I am knowledgeable of different writing styles and approaches. I identified my personal approach to writing and its advantages and disadvantages. I learnt more about critical thinking in this workshop and its role in academic writing. A model was introduced in the class, ACE model. I learnt the procedure based on which I can apply this model in writing assignments and projects. It has also facilitated in doing my assignments in a systematic manner. Action/Next steps I have planned to read academic writing booklet again for developing new concepts. I need to keep an open mind while writing and accordingly need to work on different approaches to improve my writing. I am focusing on critical thinking by reading books or journals to think critically. My deadline for this is 1-2 weeks. Conclusion Reached The assignment is in two parts: academic paper and a presentation. The paper emphasizes concept of reflection and reflective practice. The paper is also based on developing as a strategic learner. The presentation is totally about me and my personal analysis of learning style. In addition, the presentation depicts strategic approach and different postgraduate skills required for my development. While developing the presentation, I learnt that it should be brief points and I need to be aware with my topic. I am also required to clear about the objectives for the presentation. I plan on recalling the reflective practice, learning styles/approaches, time management and note taking skills to prepare for the assignment.
