Leading Self Managing Teams Report of 13TH APRIL Leading Self Managing Teams Report Introduction Organizations in the world today have improved the way they operate by dividing their employees in teams and incorporating technology in their activities for instance the use of virtual teams. Coleman and Glover (2010) defined virtual teams as a group of individuals who work together with shared values across the organization using technology. Leaders are the people assigned to ensure the business goals and objectives are met in an organization by assigning the employees various duties and responsibilities.

The managers of the organization group their employees into co-located teams and virtual teams, which could be headed by supervisors who keep track of their activities and performances (Marc, 2011). This present paper is going to analyze the role of leaders and leadership styles, collaboration initiatives and effectiveness and the team motivation and cultures. In addition, I will also provide my viewpoint towards the article that provides a stronger case for leadership style and teams. Role of leaders and leadership styles Coleman and Glover (2010) stated that Tuchman’s four stages of team development and the leadership styles include, directing, coaching, supporting and delegating stlyes.

Therefore, the roles of leaders are forming, storming, norming, and performing respectively. Forming-directing stage: The role of the leader is to control the direction of the objectives of the organization,where the employees at this stage are excited about working in teams but still their production is low. Storming-Coaching: The role of the leader at this stage is to encourage active communication between the employees hence assisting the team members to achieve their shared goals. The leader controls their decisions hence ensuring that they are focussed.

Norming-Supporting: The role of the leader at this stage is to build confidence in the team members by encouraging them to continue working towards their goals hence increasing productivity. Performing-delegating: At this stage the team is competent and working harmoniously hence the role of the leader is to continue encouraging the workers to have high morale to get high productivity. Marc (2011) wrote that the role of leaders is to tackle the technical and social difficulties to unitilize the combined efforts of a team of skilled persons.

The leaders role is to provide improved technological materials to the employees and ensure that they are trained on how to use the new technologies hence facilitating good performance. As for Carlock (2012), he stated that the role of the leader is to listen to the members and create an environment for good communication processes. Collaboration initiatives Collaboration initiatives in virtual teams are effective because they enable the employees to interact and know each other at controlled levels since they know little about the people they are working with (Marc, 2011).

The collaboration initiatives will therefore enable the virtual team employess to build strong mental models of what actitivities their workmates are doing and hence leading to better team interactions,postive attitudes and reduced conflicts (Carlock, 2012). Team motivation and culture Motivations are the rewards offered to the employees which may include increased salaries,commisions,and training among others. Marc (2011) stated that employees should be given a chance to assess themselves and other team mambers since this practice has a strong motivational value to the employees because they are the only ones who know their committments to the assigned jobs.

Carlock (2012) stated that leaders should motivate the workers by giving them intangible and tangible incentives hence making them perform better. My analysis The co-located teams are the old fashioned way in which many organizations carry out their operations. The new technologies are incorporated in the managing of the businesses and the employees who are orgarnized in co-located teams are more active and goal oriented since the efforts of each individual are seen. Virtual teams is a new way of organizing business and the fact that the employees interact only through technology, makes the team members relaxed since as much team members are working for the same purposes, individually they could not be putting too much effort in their work.

The second article which is about the “Assessment tools for developing and leading effective teams” makes the stronger case for leadership styles and teams.I prefer the co-located teams to the virtual teams because the team members can socially interact and correct each other where necessary during business operations. The co-located teams perform better because they have leaders who ensure that the team members are working towards achieving their goals and their ability can assessed during their evaluation meetings( Coleman and Glover,2010) .

Conclusion Organizations have varoius ways of ensuring that their goals and objectives are reached. The organizations have employees who form co-located teams and virtual teams who interdependentlywork with common purposes for the benefit of the businesses. The roles of the leaders in the organization include assigning duties and controlling the decisons of the members to ensure the attainement of the shared goals and objetcives of the organization.
