Successful Manager The success of a business is derived from its management. Therefore, a business needs effective management to record positive results. Management is defined as the process of controlling, planning and delegation of duties in an enterprise to fulfil its ostensible purpose. Therefore, the management has a vital role in ensuring an organisation is successful. The first obligation of the management is planning. In planning, the management has to map out how the organisation will operate, deciding the course of action and setting measurable goals (Cliffsnotes).

As such, it involves strategic decisions on means of accomplishing the objectives. Secondly, the management is obligated to organise the financial, physical and human resources. These include organisation of raw materials, capital, tools as well as delegation of duties to personnel. Thirdly, the management has the responsibility in regards to staffing. The management has to go through all the processes which include recruitment, training, promoting and transferring personnel. Similarly, the management is mandated to supervise the employees to ensure they are working both efficiently and effectively.

The fourth function is directing the whole organisational setup. This is to ensure all the functional parts are executing their tasks. For example, the management has to motivate, guide, influence, communicate and select the leaders who guide fellow workers (Griffin, 2007:32). Lastly, the management has the mandate to control the organisation by setting achievable standards. For example, the management has to establish the expected standards of performance and measure the performance of workers as well as decide on the corrective action when needed.

As a manager, there a number of functions, roles and skills required for splendid performance. However, these functions and roles are not limited. A manager has to ensure all the sectors of an organisation are in place and working efficiently. Therefore, the manager has to coordinate all these parts for excellence. For example, the manager has to coordinate the finance department with other departments in ensuring cash for purchase is relayed at the right time. Without such, some departments could stall the processes in an organisation.

Secondly, a manager has to ensure the staffing is sufficient. This is by employing the required number of people by meritocracy. Thirdly, a manager is a role model in an organisation. A manager should motivate other employees by serving as a perfect example. Fourthly, a manager should be informative and have interpersonal skills. This is by interacting with the employees and other people that assist in the day to day running of the organisation. Additionally, a manager should be informed by analysing and sharing information with other people (management study guide).

This creates a situation where many options and suggestions are evaluated. A manager is a decision maker and a problem solver at the same time. Problems and issues could occur in an organisation in many times. These problems stall the performance of an organisation, as they are likely to affect various departments. Therefore, it is in the best interests of a manager to ensure these issues are controlled and limited. Therefore, the manager should plot the various options that are available in solving the situation (DuBrin, 2008:22).

This will be followed by a decision making process. This is done by evaluating the various cons and pros of taking a particular decision. After the decision making process, the manager then executes the decision. However, wrong choice of decisions in an organisation affects the overall performance. References Cliffsnotes.
