The Career Management Challenge: Balancing Individual and Organizational NeedsA career is a long term association that a person builds with his professional qualities. A successful career is one that is chosen carefully and builds in the form of a pyramid which tapers upwards (Herriot, 1992, p.2). The term career has many pseudonyms in the form of rat race or survival of the fittest (Herriot, 1992, p.2). Thus career management can be defined as a structured way of managing ones professional life.

There are many aspects while forming ones career. Apart from the academic qualifications, the person needs to have the requisite soft skills and hard skills to maintain both quality and performance in his job. Soft skills are the ones that a person exhibits in his mannerisms and body language while hard skills reflect his technical competencies (Bhatnagar, n.d, p.2). The type of soft skill and hard skill is dependent on the type of the job as well (Bartik, 2001, p.44). A combination of these can lead to job satisfaction as well as in job seeking and achievements in career.

Work place values can also play an important part in career management. Job requirements in a churchJob in a church requires soft skills and hard skills which might be completely different from other jobs. The jobs can range from working as parishioners to designing weekly magazines. These will require the person to be creatively sound as well as have a strong hold over verbal and written form of communication. The soft skills would also include the body language of the person while answering calls.

As the job is set in a church the person would be required to behave in a very polite and patient manner. He must maintain his patience when the person asking for a query might not be very pleasing to talk with. No personal anguish or dissatisfaction should be reflected in the person who would be answering the calls. The person working as a parishioner will also have to exhibit creative writing skills as well as designing. This would help the person to come up with lively but also convincing designs or even answers that can help the organization to maintain its reputation.

Conclusion- a personal experienceWhile working as parishioner in a church, I realized many personal satisfactions. As I liked to interact with people and had a good command over communication, answering calls and solving the queries of the people gave me satisfaction and a feel good experience in the job. I was happy and satisfied when people appreciated me for the answers they received for their queries. Also the designed I had prepared for my magazines were fairly liked by all. These personal achievements also helped me to contribute to the organizations as people used to buy my magazines designs which also helped to spread the reputation of my church.

Thus I can say that I enjoy working as a parishioner as it gives me a sense of job satisfaction thus doing justice to my creative qualities and dedication to my work.ReferencesHerriot, P. (1992).
