People in Organization Abstract This reflective journal seeks to explain and underscore the importance of human resource in the running of an organization. More specifically, how human resource can be managed so as to bring about the intended results. It is a reflection of running an organization and looks into a brief case of a young management trainee called Gary and the decisions he has to make for him to remain relevant in the organization. This is because of his extreme drinking behaviours. While the leadership structure of an organization has many departments, this reflection tends to demonstrate that dealing with people is one of the most sensitive. Introduction: Organizations are very important in the day to day life. One of the most basic and fundamental aspects of organizations is that it involves human resources. The word “organization” comes from the word “organize”. This word suggests a sense of order and management of human resources to bring about or achieve an intended result. Literature review Management is an umbrella word. It means controlling and harmonizing resources so that the organization can achieve its goals and targets. The word management clearly points to leadership of the organization. This is where the human resource begins. Leadership determines the quality of the organization almost directly. This is because it is charged with the responsibility of coming up with decisions that shall lift the quality of the organization. Poor leadership leads to unnecessary mistakes which end up in costing the organization a lot of resources. The quality of leadership is reflected through the organizational leadership structure. Under the leadership structure various managers are assigned with different responsibilities which are viewed as pillars to the organization. This is to make sure that the growth of an organization is all round and evenly distributed. The leadership structures act as the check against any extremes that could be done by the workers, who may not have understood the goals and objectives of the organization. Some workers take longer to understand, compared to others. The work of the human resource managers is always well cut out. It involves hiring and dismissing workers. This includes coming up with the required standard of qualifications of the prospective workers. This also includes developing skills through training and creation of incentives. The aim of these activities is to come up with a strong workforce that shall work with high level of professionalism. The reward system of the organization is one of the most sensitive areas to the workers. This is because it can nurture talent or even demoralize the workers. This department does not exclude dealing with the cases of indiscipline among workers. In some large organizations, the human resource department is divided into many other smaller departments. These departments deal with specific matters within the organization. While still having a look at the human resource department of an organization, there are times when highly trained workers become involved in cases of indiscipline. These manifest in multiple ways. Some workers are fond of over drinking. This causes many of them to come to work when they are drunk. To illustrate this, our case involves a management trainee called Gary. Although he has full potential, he is not able to be fully helpful to the organization because of his drinking habit. Those who know Gary when he was studying at the university, say he was used to drinking a little too much. He was always late for classes and sometimes never showed up for classes at all. When called upon to be accountable, he had convincing excuses that left the lecturers and other concerned people with satisfaction. Somehow, that was able to cushion him from trouble as long as he was a student. However, when he joined the professional field as a management trainee, he initially thought the same excuses would work in the new work place. However, his bosses became fed up with his excuses and had to demand a proper explanation from him or else he face the sack. There are basic ethics of running an organization that become manifested in this instance. Gary made basic assumptions that his drinking habit would affect his work place behaviour. He also had thought presumptuously that it would be easy to drop his drinking habit. As a worker of an organization with clear set of core values and ethics, the failed to understand how his behaviour violated these set standards. It was clear that his behaviour was not impressive to his fellow workers in that they had to do his s role whenever he was away. Such behaviour does not promote team spirit among workers in an organization. Many of them saw it as selfish. Obviously, he downplayed these opinions or he was ignorant about them. The paradox of his perception is that Gary wanted to be as successful as every other worker in the organization. He also concurred that the job was good. For the organization to be successful, Gary had to be guided through one branch of leadership. This fell under the human resource management. To begin with, all the managers started by being soft, later on had to give him a stern message. The reality of running an organization is that people like Gary have to be given clear guidance and direction for the sake of the good of the organization. Workers can fail to have the same perspective as their leaders or managers. For Gary to accept that he had started on a wrong footing, he had to be convinced by somebody. This was the human resource management. Developing an organization is not always about formal training. Like in this case, it did not take formal training. There are instances where a control group is compared to an experimental group. This is done to improve the performance through formal training. There are cases that involve motivation and a change of attitude like Gary’s case. This entails getting to reveal the real implications of irresponsible behaviours to a worker. There are times performance is enhanced through a strong and consisted reward system or talent retention system. Conclusion The sense of order and harmony in the executions of corporate activities is what makes an organization to excel. Besides, workers have to clearly understand the goals and aims of the organization and become motivated to achieve those goals. Employees must see the essence of teamwork, punctuality and achieving goals. They must become satisfied in doing these things on their own i.e. without close supervision. For Gary, he had to learn to avoid hurting the relationships he had established at the workplace. Ultimately, he had to decide between resigning and changing for the sake of retaining his job. The desire to change had to be stronger than his desire to quit. This is the present day reality of running every organization. It is about learning how to balance multiple aspects that affect the performance of organizations. Key among these is the human resource within the organization. Read More
