Career Portfolio Introduction Purpose of the portfolio A career portfolio is extremely beneficial for individuals for their as it not only provides an opportunity for them but it also demonstrates proof of skills and learning capabilities with an individual. Similarly, the purpose why I created my career portfolio was to identify the skill that I posses. Further I wanted to identify my weaknesses and also wanted to overcome them. This career portfolio tracks my learning experiences, the skills that companies require within their potential candidates and the skills that I possess. Further this report not only enlists my background and educational experience as management student but also highlights that I would be extremely beneficial to companies because I possess great qualities to be a manager, and more specifically a project manger. Work philosophy I am a currently a student and have chosen management as my majors. Further, I would like to gain more knowledge in the same subject but as a specialization field I would chose to be Project Manger. I value relations, like team work and like to delegate people and like to organize events and activities. Thus I can state that all the skills I possess are directly or indirectly linked to me being a project manger. Furthermore, my interest has always been greatly in the field of management and I have always been incredible in managing things altogether. I truly value the four major concepts of management, i.e. planning, organizing, leading, controlling and also apply them to my daily life as well. Why I have chosen project management Today in this dynamic world, competition is flourishing and new and innovative products are rising. Thus it is also brining in new opportunities of employment. Management is such a field that is a need today in all organizations because organizations would fail because poorly managed organization would not only lead to reduced profits and revenues but they would face difficulty in survival as well. Nowadays the world economy is facing down turn and downsizing is on its rise. But still management related employers need not to worry because all organizations are run by effective and efficient managers. It is the managers who through his competent skills save the organizations from sinking in severe moments. Thus management is such a field that is not bound to any thing and no matter what the economy is going through proper management can save the organization (Robbins & Coutler, 27). Furthermore, within the field of management, Project Management is one such field that is gaining a lot of importance today. I choose to become a project manager and I am gaining specialization in this field due to rising demand of these kinds of managers. Nowadays organizations group their tasks and activities in form of different projects and these projects are run by project managers. Thus demands of effective project mangers are rising in different levels of organization, both multinational and global organization and local companies as well. Nature of the job Project management today is used to plan, coordinate, and control the diverse activities of different projects. The basic purpose of project management is to predict the problems and potential risks. It plans, organizes and controls activities in such a way that the projects are completed as successful as possible despite all risks and dangers. Project management is a highly specialized branch of management and thus it becomes more effective when it uses specialized techniques and facilities. Project management provides guidance for organizations to plan out their activities and events in a systematic manner. Project management also helps organization in determining their goals and helps organization in attaining high profitability. Project management defines a project goals and objectives, specifies the resources that would be needed, associate a budget and builds a time frame for the success of the project. Thus a project manger main task is to initiate, plan, implement, evaluate, and support the events and activities in such a manner that the result is a success. Thus a project manger is thus not only responsible in carrying out daily activities but is also responsible to act promptly in tense situations. Working conditions Project mangers are those risk mangers who formulate strategies and the entire task they perform requires more of their mental capabilities then as compared to physical work. Thus project manger enjoys good working conditions because all day long he works in the office, planning and organizing activities. Furthermore, a project manger is also responsible in visiting worksites because they have to ensure the success of the project as a whole. They visit worksites to determine that the no problem is encountered in the fields, further issues and problems also arise in worksites. Thus the project manger has to ensure that all the issues and tasks are being completed out. They also have to ensure that the workers are being looked upon so that no malfunction practices are seen in the site area. Some also suggest that project mangers should be located near the site of their project so that they can take prompt actions in case of emergency. Qualifications and skills There are certain qualities and characteristics that a project manger must possess because the success of the project depends on the effective manger. He should have strong leadership ability and should have the capability to handle all tough moments. He should not only foresee the coming dangers but should also plan ahead a solution for them too. A project manager generally works with and through people and thus he should posses an ability to motivate, develop and encourage its subordinate to produce effective results. He is not only responsible in creating a sound relationship with his team members but also a bounded relation among the team members as well. He is to run the team as a whole and thus should resolve all conflicts within the organization and also outside organization as well. He is the main communicator between the management and the employees thus he should ensure that he forwards the issues of the employees to the management and management policies, rules, guidelines and expectation top the workers. Furthermore, he should possess excellent communication skills, good interpersonal skills and time management skills. In this competitive work environment he does not only train his subordinates but he himself also needs attains training. Training helps mangers and since with the rapid increase in technology and intense competition manger’s needs polishing. Thus organizations ensure that project managers are also given training where they improve their skills and remove any incompetence acts of mangers. Future outlook As already mentioned above, project management and all related jobs regarding management are on the increasing phase in the global environment. All organization nowadays requires project mangers either on contractual or permanent features. Thus even in the near future the demand of project management and thus project managers are going to increase. Organization also requires competent mangers that would run the organization efficiently and effectively. A project manger plans, organizes, controls all the planned activates and thus formulates the result in accordance to the defined targets in extremely helpful to the organization. Project mangers also help organization in stimulating their position in the market. How management will help me become in the future Project management is actually an advanced field of management and all the concepts of management are derived into project management. Thus management is the core subject that would help me and all other management students attain a position in an organization. Management is such a subject that guides us in all the phases, it advises us to plan our activities and set objectives and targets. Thus after we have formulated our targets it guides us to achieve those targets with respect to time and financial constraints. Furthermore, it is this subject that builds within us leadership qualities and entails us to coordinate and control our activities in all situations. Related occupations Management is a diversified field and thus it is not only limited to project management, but a lot of other related occupations are enlisted with it. Some of today’s most prominent occupations within the field of management are hotel management, marketing management, event management, risk management, supply chain management, etc. They are different jobs but the core essence between these jobs is the same, i.e. management. Within all these jobs, the manager must posses good manager attributes and characteristics. He must enroll the four basic functions of management; planning, organizing leading and controlling in its business activities to achieve the desired set of goals and objectives. All these above management related jobs are built on the same structure and thus the manger has to attain the same characteristic in all these jobs mentioned above. Assess the marketable skills for this job To remain competitive in this world employer should posses certain qualities and characteristics within themselves that would not only differentiate them from others but would also help them create better employment opportunities. A manger should hold such characteristics within itself that organizations come over searching for you. For a project manger, a person must certain marketing qualities as well. Similarly, I think that I am perfect for this job because I not only have good communication skills and qualities of a leader but I can also act in dynamic environment. I value things greatly and strongly believe in team work, even though team work is difficult and can sometimes create conflicts but I believe that difficulties are part if life and only those individuals are successful who handle things with care. Further, I do not get tensed by new technologies and value new innovations. Thus if a new technology erupts in the organization I would be more inclined in learning and gain proficiency in it. Today in this global market competition has really intensified and thus due to this manager must possess marketing skills. Within marketing, one of the most important skills that mangers possess is its innovation and creativity. Further a marketing manager should possess qualities to conduct new types of marketing, advertising, promotion, public relation. Thus he would only be able to accomplish these when he would adopt innovation and creativity in its actions. Thus I would be extremely contented to state that I possess all these qualities that I mentioned above. Thus these qualities that I possess would make me perfect candidate for this job, i.e. project management. But as reference to my resume, I need to attain more education and thus specialize in the management field because nowadays companies do not demand only bachelor’s degree students. Thus due to this I would attain my masters degree in Project Management; “MSC in Project Management” from US, UK, or Canada. Further, will acquire the PHD degree in ‘Business and Management Research’ from either “Bradford, University School Of Management” or from “Cranfield University, School Of Management”. The main criteria they demand within the fresh candidates are their master’s degree. Further more, I need to gain experience in my respective field, this is more important then even acquiring professional studies. Thus, I should opt more for volunteer work and help various organization in their causes to gain experience. Often companies get involved in different social causes and then they require volunteers to help them us. Thus if I would gain such experience I would not only get acquainted with some management of the companies but would also be befitted by acquiring job later on in this respective organizations. Marketing is increasing day by day and due to this organization today have a special department of marketing. In this department they overlook new strategies in which they create a benchmark and they distinguish themselves from its competitors using different strategies and tactics. Thus organizations are demanding those individuals, students who are innovative, creative and who have a different set of mind towards a product. Today customers want new products, new services and require variety of choice. Thus to satisfy them it is the marketing department within the organization who has to cater to all the needs of the customer. The marketing department ensures that the product is being reached to the customer leaving them delighted. They are involved in the production process even before the production; because it carries out a research in which it identifies the main needs of the customers. Assessment Analysis I conducted the personality test of “Keirsey Temperament Sorter-Ii” and according to this test I have been declared as a “Guardian.” According to the report I posses qualities of a good leader, I value teamwork, take prompt decisions, have natural management capabilities and thus and thus can supervise and manage things smoothly in all spheres of life, both in personal and business life. Further, I am not only a career oriented person who is always busy in its work life but I mange to keep a balance between my work and family life. Even though I have fun with my own friends and collogue but I value my duties and responsibilities above all. I am not only hard work and helpful but also dependable and would be perfect in organization because people would be value my judgment and opinion. Further, due to my loyal and responsible nature organization would value me greatly and these natural traits would be extremely valued. To sum up it can be stated that I am organized, hardworking, value relationships, encourage team work, helpful, humble, cautious and dependable. But I do lack in certain characteristics and would need to improve in those fields. As I am dependable but to effective manger I should be independent and others should be dependent on my judgment. Further more, a manager also requires leadership capabilities but a leader cannot be born until he takes fully responsibility of all the actions he makes. A manager is responsible to take prompt actions and decisions that are solely on his judgment thus to be an effective manger I would have to develop the independent nature and power to take actions. This would not only make me an effective leader but would also create more confidence. Thus to overcome these weaknesses I should start taking relying on myself, and stop being dependent on others. Therefore, I would groom out my capabilities, potentials and should start to rely on my own judgment. I am already aware of the fact that the judgments I make are correct and authentic but I always look for others approval. So to overcome this, I should start taking decisions on my own and stop being dependant on others. This would build self-confidence within my personality, entail me to take prompt actions and achieve all the qualities of an effective leader and a manager. My Plans and Proposed Quality Of Life Every individual within the society holds certain plans, wants some accomplishments in its life and wants to ensure that that he attains what he wants. Similarly, even I have certain plans that I would want in my future life. Further, I want to an effective project manger in some good reputed company. Thus all the plans regarding my career are actually linked the general quality of life, i.e. the well being of human being in the society. The quality of life of the individual is generally dependent on happiness, satisfaction, human rights, freedom. Thus quality of life is extremely important in every individuals life because health, happiness are such characteristics that every individual would want to attain in its life. Similarly, even I want to be satisfied and enjoy happiness in my life. Even though quality of life is different from the standard of living but I think that they two are interlinked with each other. Because when a persons standard of living increases he gets worldly pleasure and thus one way or the other he attains satisfaction which in the end leads to happiness. Even though money, status and job are not really important characteristics in contributing a healthy quality of life but still I think that without money and other factors some things cannot be attained.
