Case Study Part of the plan that discusses organizational processes, human resources and ethics needed to be established in KAVA. Organizing is theprocess by which managers establish the structure of working among to allow them to achieve organizational goals efficiently and effectively. It’s a formal system that revolves around tasks and reporting relationships. It determines how employees use organizational resources to achieve their goals. An important part of organizational structure is organizational design. Organizational design represents the process through which managers undertake and make specific choices about the tasks and relationships resulting in a particular organizational structure. According to contingency theories, managers in most cases, design organizational structures that are most appropriate to the factors and circumstances surrounding the domain area of the organization itself. There are no set standards. One can’t tell which organizational structure is the best, as there are various ways to design an organization. For a particular organization, the rigid structure may be the best possible approach while for others a more flexible approach may be the right way out. Four factors are important determinants of the organizational structure or the organizing strategy a manager may opt for. These include, the kind of organizational environment, the sort of business strategy the organization undertakes, the technology that has been applied in the organization and the characteristics of human resources within the organization. Organizational Processes: Background situation: Kava is an island country, situated in the South Pacific. More than 50% of its population is 15 years of age. It is an ethnic mix of indigenous South Pacific tribes comprising of Asian, African, French, Spanish and a sizable number of Americans. There are a lot of languages spoken in the region comprising of English, Spanish and French and a couple of other indigenous languages. It’s economy is agriculture oriented and thrives on petroleum, coffee, cocoa, spices, bananas, sugar, fishing tourism and natural gas. There is inexpensive quality labor available throughout. One of the biggest problems associated with this land is its vulnerability to natural disasters. These include threats like that of Tsunami, Hurricanes, Tornadoes, floods, fires, volcanic eruptions, earth quakes, HIV/AIDS, Petroleum spill, High risk for avian flu and terrorism within and outside the country. On the plus side there are a lot of governmental and nongovernmental organizations, community based organizations, faith based groups and businesses that are helping the country socially. Issues: There is a major lack of proper infrastructure in the region because KAVA is a region that has been affected by natural disaster. Secondly, some other threats like those of Petroleum spill, Avian, flu and terrorism keep hitting on the region and last but not the least, the economy is heavily dependent on agriculture. Furthermore, the potential risks associated with this country may include poor purchasing power because the country is heavily dependent on agriculture, tourism, fishing and other natural resources instead of manufacturing and selling of finished products. Undoubtedly, industrialization results in more jobs and better purchasing power that further leads to creation of a new market of various products The poor purchasing power would be a great impediment in accomplishment of goals followed by fluctuations in exchange rates and lack of proper industrial infrastructure since Kava requires rehabilitation and reconstruction which would make it lucrative for foreign organizations. Political uncertainty and instability would also be a significant obstacle that could result in inefficiency and block smooth operations. Pressure groups or local publics might raise questions regarding pollution and environmental safety if unsafe and less environment-friendly production methods are adopted. Ways to counter them: The real deal lies, in cashing in on the opportunities coming our way and trying to counter the challenges associated with calamities striking our way. Because the disaster hits every now and then, the first and foremost thing the company needs to do is construct some earthquake proof business sites to operate on. Crisis Management has to be one of our top most priorities. All relevant measures to tackle crisis time have to be ensured. This will be our key to ensuring long lasting loyalty with customers. Secondly, in order to accomplish our goals and objectives of accomplishing a clear and distinctive image in the mind of Kava residents, a mammoth sum of money have to be allocated to initiate a solid Corporate Responsibility Program. The company may face some internal and external ground factors in execution of its program which will be developed on the principles of Corporate Philanthropy. Thirdly, a whole product line needs to be in place that will change the paradigm of customer dependence on solely agricultural products. The need for industrial products should be targeted on and the need converted to want cum demand accordingly. This will automatically generate sales and keep a a loyal band of customers to the company’s credit. Special attention has to be paid towards societal and cultural taboos so that objectives could easily be accomplished. Human resources: One of the biggest advantages of working in KAVA would be the availability of cheap, good quality labor. The labor force needs to be capitalized and as much of blue labor that can be hired must be hired from the local community. They are more aware of the local culture and well acquainted with the ethical do’s and don’ts of manufacturing. Another obstacle in the way of human resources would be the dearth of employee trust and agreement on the new venture. They may not endorse the Kava’s adventure according to own understanding and beliefs or could find it riskier than any other venture. To counter this, it is important to create an expectation setting meeting and take them into complete confidence about the expected goals of the organization. Once they are convinced things will automatically fall into place. Ethics: During the course of time, there have been numerous companies that have been subject to catastrophe and crisis and have not been successful in managing and implementing policies to control the disaster which results in a unquantifiable loss of trust, image and public relations for the companies. In the end it is important to understand that disasters and accidents are inevitable and unexpected but it is the actions taken after the incident that is of significance. A company that manages crises well is one that is respected and pursued by the consumers and the general public. In order to manage crises well and take the right steps in times of disasters is well taken care of through a plan that would be an advance preparation for the course of action to be implemented. With the world contracting and with the advent of globalization, new spreads quick and companies need to take care of the way they are perceived by the consumers. Moreover, it is equally important to make the right decisions in time of accidents in order to avoid bad publicity and a permanent dent on the companys image and reputation. Works Cited Jones, G.R.
