Green Lane Dental Surgery, a dental practice, has three dental surgeons, three dental nurses, a full-time receptionist, a part-time receptionist and a practice manager. Green Lane served patients from National Health Service and private patients. New patients had to make an appointment at the reception. Existing patients were reminded every six months to make appointments for checkups. The details of an appointment were recorded in the appointment diary. Patients reported to reception, where the receptionist checked for details, such as name, address, etc.

The patient was then directed to the relevant surgery for treatment. A dental nurse recorded details of the treatment, such as work carried out and cost, on the patient record card. A treatment might require several visits. At the end of the treatment, patients had to settle any outstanding dues. Receipts were provided for payments made. The practice manager was responsible for all finance related activities and bank transactions. The Department of Health made payments for National Health Service patients.

The manager was responsible for monthly updates on the number of treatments for National Health Service patients. A PC based accounting package was used for the financial accounting tasks. The nurses were required to maintain adequate levels of consumables, such as amalgam, injection needles, etc. Consumables were ordered from various suppliers. A product could be supplied by more than one supplier, and more than one product could be supplied by a supplier.
