Wembley Stadium Management Wembley Stadium is the iconic stadium with very remarkable historical basis as far back as 1924. It is one of the most spectacular football stadiums in the world, with long term commitment to games. It is one of the key places to hold International Sports Event Management with Security System. The new Wembley is a state of the art facility designed by globally renowned architects for hosting national and international events in sports, music and environment. The ultimate stage for major events, built to the highest specifications, using the latest technology and promising the ultimate event experience. “Wembley will provide the luxurious conditions in which to host the leading conference on sports event management and security. The prestigious Corinthian Room will give the perfect backdrop to our exhibition and a fantastic area for delegates from all over the world to network and build relationships during coffee breaks or over lunch. “Wembley Stadium is a truly iconic venue, known the world over. It will be a fitting venue for the Olympic Football finals (Cloe, 2007) Team of management aims to provide the best possible and safest environment for its users and local community. The architecture of the Stadium is of great acknowledgement. “Visible right across London with it’s 133 metre tall arch - the longest single span steel roof structure in the world - the revolutionary stadium will seat up to 90,000 spectators. It is promised to be one of the world’s greatest stadiums, with outstanding facilities, unrivalled acoustics and sell-out sporting matches - all under it’s retractable roof” (Arup, 2007) This great facility and the magnanimous scale at which the events would take place requires a team of skilful people to manage the smooth and efficient event management as well as security, to ensure maximum customer satisfaction with the experience. The access has to be controlled determining minimum car usage, and more efficient public transport. This would be vital to successful infrastructure maintenance and management. The upgrading and improvement on both the Wembley Stadium Station and Wembley Central Stations have to be given priority. It would also require for improved section of highway known as the Stadium Access Corridor. “With our wealth of experience in project and risk management, technical expertise, procurement know-how, funding strategies and stakeholder management, we are driving the project forward to ensure everything remains on track for the scheduled opening”.(Arup) The event management of the magnitude which takes place at Wembley would require efficient infrastructure, vigilant security, good public transport system, variety of kiosks and other facilities, facilities management for meeting the needs of 90,000 spectators, good data access system and effective waste management. “Improving sustainability at Wembley Stadium is a long-term goal.  We are excited to have support from the stadium’s management team and know these programs will positively affect future events held there.”(Wembley, 2007) The combined effort of the management team working in harmony with the government agencies would ensure successful Wembley Stadium Management, which will be the centre for ongoing events and sports performances. The attraction to events taking place at Wembley Stadium would have to cater to the needs of the international as well as national audience. The information needs to be available in different languages and the stadium should have the service to attend to the needs of non-English speaking people. The visual signs on display should be graphically clear and bold in display and communication. The stadium should have very clear and correct visual guide, directing spectators to the right designated areas of interest. Besides this there should be usherers to assist those who are lost or confused. The security system should be able to keep up with the vigilance without too much delay and equipped with latest technology which would ensure quick safety measure. There should be a safety manager with significant experience in the “crowd safety, event, facilities and operational management”. (Management Wembley, 2007). Noel Jeffs has been hired as the Operations Director & Safety Certificate Holder of the new Wembley, whose current responsibilities include client design development, licensing, event, operational and facilities management for the new stadium. The events which would regularly take place at Wembley would always have a strong emotional aspect as they would be sports events with supporters and excited spectators going out of control. The stadium should invest some form of audience management through remote cameras installed which would give the management and the security, a feel of the areas which would need extra supervision and control. There should be a team to help manage such adverse and out of control situations with intervention and discussion, but there should also be effective back-up for forceful control in the event crowd is completely out of rational control methods. There should also be legal support and police support from the government. The design team at Wembley should also be remarkable at creating powerful visual guides and information brochures which may easily be a important guide to the spectators and provide accuracy of information. There should be information display system with visual boards directing the spectators as well as electronic display giving current changes with updates and accurate information. The basic information guideline should be presented upon entry so that audience is not lost in the magnitude for pace for lack of information and direction. There should also be audio announcements for audience regarding specific times related to the events. This would require a strong creative team of visual planners and designers. The information about the specific event should be made in advance using web and internet, radio, television and print media. The event day management of the number of spectators should be taken into account before management gets into the details of information, dissemination, security arrangement and kiosk facilities, along with waste management. There should be several counters serving as help desk for visitors keeping in mind the language, communication and urgency. The support and help should be available for easy access and good experience. The excitement of the event can create a chaos which can come int the way of good experience, the ticketing staff should be well trained in providing efficient service without asking too many questions. They should be able to handle different forms of money management like cash transaction, credit card and other commonly operational modes. Tickets should be made available at least two to four weeks before the event. On the day of the event, the lines should move fast and directions should be provided for efficient movement of the queue. During half time when spectators are in a hurry and urgency to use the toilet and the facilities available at the kiosk for refreshment, the directions for access should be made bold and clear helping them reach their desired destination with ease. Even smoking areas should be designated and boldly designed. There should be effective waste management and ample availability of toilets with consideration for disabled, aged and children. There should be several counters for drinks and fast food and health food, serving the visitors with ample choice. The time allotted for this break should not be too short, as that can create chaos and stampede. Along with service there should be effective security provisions to manage and control the emergency situation. Transportation and infrastructure would be another area where the management and the government should work together to ensure mobility and security. Risk Management through harmonious cooperation of the management team and the police force would give better order and control, for the benefit of the visitors. Football being one of the major events taking place in the stadium will involve attendance from wide range of audience international as well as national. Car parking should made a an important consideration defining clear directions through signs posted for different categories of parking, which should be assisted by people managing and directing those who need extra direction. The management of risk and the management of the public order are both equally important. “Our government, Police service, and Football Association may not be as expert in the management of risk, in relation to football-related violence, as they have confident to advertise” (O’Reilly,1999)The nature of society emphasizes the concept of managing risk and uncertainty in business embraces, increasingly, pure risks in addition to those business risks that encompass political, economic, technical and legal facets traditionally associated with discipline. The different types of risk which could be foreseen in the Wembley management would include business interruption, crisis management, and disaster recovery; corporate strategy; personal policies and in case of the Police Service, public order intelligence and tactics. Risk assessment and Risk Management should be combined to achieve greater control and management. In the planning for the visitor’s management special consideration should be made for maintaining and availability of the facilities available for disabled visitors and their families. They should have the benefit in the parking, in the queue and assistance in the right direction. They should also have easy access to toilet facility and the kiosk facility, with a inclined pathway which would avoid escalators or stairways. There should be a card which makes them preferred for special assistance in reaching their desired destination without difficulty and chaos. The involvement of the local community will enhance the experience through cooperation and cultural assimilation. The local community should be involved in the planning of the event by creating better awareness and defining the role of the host community, for a major event. Media should play a significant role in encouraging participation form the local community to work as volunteers for the event and help manage the event as a national pride. The senior citizens and the youth could be urged to take on the active role in event management. This would benefit the society, the organization, the community and the country. This would have a very enriching impact on the quality of management. This would also provide the international tourists to merge with the members of the local community who are eager to receive them. This would inculcate a feeling of mutual harmony and encourage more positive interaction. This would certainly have a very significant and positive impact on the customer experience, giving the spectator social, emotional and physical satisfaction with a well managed, event in which community, management and the government has actively taken part to guarantee a successful and promising event charged with energy, enthusiasm and connectivity.
