Case Study The Police officer is a member of a particular official organization whose role is to ensure that the law isadhered to. They are commonly known as police woman or policeman, patrol woman or patrol man, constable or police agents in some areas. Their main role is to prevent and detect crimes and apprehend the criminals. They also protect the public and maintain law and order in their areas of jurisdiction. Police officers’ motivation can promote their performance thus ensuring law and order in the society. Interest in Working as a Hong Kong Police Officer I would be interested in working as a Hong Kong police officer. There are several reasons as to why I would like to be a Hong Kong police officer. My reasons are based on the motivation practices that the Hong Kong police officers are given, and they include: The Hong Kong police officers are treated with respect and dignity and the same time their hard work appreciated. The Hong Kong police force offers motivational practices like awards and honors thus making the occupation interesting. I enjoy competition, thus they feel that the competition set in the Hong Kong police force is appealing. The Hong Kong police officers’ talents are developed, and their performance managed. It is, therefore, more professional compared to other regions of the world. The Hong Kong police are taken through a competitive training making it of quality as the police officers strive to excel. I am attracted to the Hong Kong police since it bases its course on the “excellent performance” (Traver 55). The system in Hong Kong is contrary to other places whereby the focus is made on the quantity as opposed to the quality of police officers. The Hong Kong police awarding system promote healthy competition among the recruits and the same time help in determining the best. The system shows that there is some order in the Hong Kong police system. The Hong Kong police force also does not focus on punishment, but rather the use of awards to motivate. The Hong Kong police force is, therefore, friendlier through the introduction of motivation tools instead of punishments. It also gives one an opportunity to further his or her studies thus more fare to academicians like me. Application of Motivation Theories There are several examples from the case study that a theory of motivation can be applied. Firstly, the police force awards the graduate with the highest scores with the “Commissioner of Police’s Certificate of Academic Merit” (Traver 55). Secondly, police force awards the “best all- round probationary inspector” with the ‘Batton of Honor’, a ‘Silver Plaque’ and the ‘Brian Slevin Trophy.’ Thirdly, the police force issue silver and gold whistles to the “best all- round recruit officers” (Traver 56). Fourthly, external and internal award schemes issues the awards that emphasize on positive reinforcement as opposed to punishments. Fifthly, police force awards the exemplary police officers with a letter or compliments of appreciation for doing an outstanding job. Sixthly, the police force issues awards publicly to the Commanding Officer Commendations and Commissioner of Police Commendations. Seventhly, the police force issues the admirable external awards under media coverage. These include the Chief Executive Commendations that are given to the senior most persons in the force. It can also be in the form of Disciplined Services Awards and Bravery Awards for the police officers. The Bravery Awards are in the form of Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals. Other Effective Ways to Motivate the Police Officers The police force can motivate the officers in several other effective ways for improved performance. First, the head or top authority of the police force should attend the significant events in which the juniors are. The events should be used to console or congratulate them and include birthdays, weddings, funerals, and illnesses. The act will show the junior staff and team members that you care for them. They are, therefore, more likely to reciprocate the feeling thus forming a formidable team (Traver 56). Second, the police officer heads should be accessible so as to promote the interaction with the team or juniors. The leading team or authority should find a face to face time with his or her employees. The police that promotes open- door is not enough since it still sets some form of authority. The leaders should, therefore, meet the police officers in their turfs for a facial time interaction. The leading team should spend with the officers, some time in places like the patrol cars. In return, it will open up the police officers and make them feel freer for interaction with their leaders. The police officers’ morale will be more positively impacted by such an interaction (Taver 56). Third, the leading team in the police force should set time to broadly share good work. The leaders should ensure that the police officers get a ‘thank you’ for a good work. The practice should be done publicly to positively motivate their good practices. The leaders should name the police officers by name during the praising moments. Activities like meetings should begin with a short period of given thanks. The police force leadership should acknowledge the good work of all police officers (Traver 57). Lastly, the police officers should be motivated by involvement in the decision making process. This will ensure sustainability of the process, projects, and programs as it develops some sense of ownership among the police officers. The police officers should have the feeling that their expertise is valued. Involving the police officers in discussions shows that the service cares about what they think. I also sharpen the focus of the leading team in the police force (Traver 57). The police officers are very important personnel in our day to day lives and society at large. They are the people who ensure that law and order are in the country. Their motivation is, therefore, of much importance since it promotes their performance. The motivation should be at all the levels of the police force, including the recruitment stage. The motivation should be focused on all the police officers since they all have a role to play.
