Emirates is wholly owned by the Government of Dubai and this has provided them with the capital infusion for their equipment and additional planes.  In addition, Dubai’s adoption of the open skies policy has given the company the advantage to expand its hub-based business strategy.

  1. What are the strengths of Emirates' Dubai-based hub-an-spoke model? What are the weaknesses?

Emirates favorable location of being within 8 hours flight to ¾ of the world’s population is definitely its strength in addition to the support of the government of Dubai.  The disadvantage of a hub is that it takes a lot of manpower, equipment and resources to maintain it.

  1. Is Emirates' strategy sustainable? Why?

Yes.  Because it is able to service most parts of the world at a lesser cost than its competitors.  Its exponential growth attests to the sustainability of its strategy.

What are some of the major external issues facing Emirates that affect its competitiveness and which should be addressed by strategic planning?

The continuing pressure on the cost which provides competitiveness to Emirates in addition to its proximity to most cities in the world may now be an advantage but competition is on the lookout on how to further cut their price to be able to compete with Emirates.
