The concept of power enables the leaders to exercise their authority to control others and it is used differently. In male dominated societies, the managers have ultimate control over their subordinates who are supposed to follow instructions from the top. Depending on how power is used in the organization, it can be noted that the theme of OBEDIENCE is prevalent in paternalistic organizations that are hierarchical in structure.

However, there has been a dramatic shift from the way power and authority used to be exercised in the organization compared to the current period. As depicted in the case of IBM, the theme of PERSUASION has significantly gained prominence in managing organizations during the contemporary period. This involves the process of trying to influence and convince the employees in the organization to share the same vision with you. If properly implemented, this strategy can help the employees to be productive in their efforts since they would be in a position to share the same vision with the manager. The other term is VISION which is concerned about the goals and objectives of the organization. The manager has a responsibility of sharing the vision of the organization with the workers so that their efforts can be directed towards the attainment of the desired goals.

The other theme presented in the case is NEGOTIATION where the leaders ought to engage the employees when intending to make decisions or solve conflicts that may exist in the organization. People tend to disagree over certain issues and this practice is common in most cases. However, it only becomes detrimental to the organization if the conflict becomes dysfunctional. In order to resolve this kind of conflict, the theme of COLLABORATION should be taken into consideration. This theme deals with finding and solving problems in such a way that everyone benefits. It is more like a win-win situation

In order to manage the organization effectively, it is imperative to use the strategy of persuasion when making decisions. If the employees are persuaded to contribute in the decision making process within the organization, they are likely to become part of the ultimate decision. If people share the same vision with the leader, it becomes easier for the leader to control them. This helps the organization to attain its desired goals. It is also recommended that leaders should use the strategy of negotiation when they want to solve conflicts. An amicable solution is likely to be reached when that warring parties are brought to the drawing table to freely express their feelings and opinions. For the sake of progress in the organization, it may also be recommended that collaboration can be used to solve the differences that exist between the parties that may be in disagreement. This also helps to create solid relationships among the employees. Where there is mutual understanding among the members of the team, there are likely to be few chances of conflicts or disagreements and this will contribute to the viability of the organization.
