Admission To Undergraduate School - Admission/Application Essay Example

Admission Essay Upon entering undergraduate school I carried a number of preconceptions. Throughout high school my main intention in scholastic study was to secure admission to a university, as I believed this would be the path to gainful employment. During this time I viewed school as a means to an end and constantly questioned how what I was learning would contribute to my future career success. While I was a successful student, in retrospect I recognize that I did not fully realize my intellectual potential.

Upon entering college, I increasingly came to understand that the purpose of intellectual study is as much about understanding oneself as it about preparing for a future career. In part, this shift in my understanding accompanied my emotional development, but it also reflected a broader ranging shift of personal meaning. Subsequently, I took a wide array of courses in a variety of disciplines. I explored my writing abilities through technical writing classes, and pushed the depths of my analytical skills in statistical data management courses.

These studies ultimately confirmed my past interests and allowed me to recognize new areas where my talents and passions coincided. Influenced by Carl Roger’s theory of the human, an epiphany occurred in my life when I recognized that my life meaning should coincide with my career goals (Buree). Additionally, I came to appreciate Maslow’s perspective on high order purpose (Maslow). As such, I set about pursuing my passions. Recognizing my greatest scholastic potential involved numbers, I pursued a degree in Applied Statistics.

Three years ago I began an internship in Shanghai, China with the Bank of New York Mellon Western Fund Management Company. During my summer breaks I returned to this internship and advanced my technical skills, business acumen, and self-awareness. Perhaps most importantly, my experience at this internship functioned as a sign post for my future personal and career goals, as I decided to study financial management. In addition to learning the next step in my educational journey, this internship demonstrated to me the importance of building relationships with others; thus, I’ve built up an extraordinary connection with both my co-workers and my bosses.

Due to their kindness and our working connection, they welcomed my return with open arms. I entered my university study with vague career aspirations and limited self-awareness. Today I am a confident and strong individual who is thrilled about what the future holds. While I am proud of the personal and professional gains I have made since entering college, I recognize that to achieve my full human potential it is necessary for me to pursue new challenges. I spent a number of months deliberating with family and advisors about the next step in my life journey.

During the period of my internship I was naïve and impressionable, but thirsty to bridge the gap between my current knowledge and ambitions. Today it’s my goal to return to the Bank Of New York Mellon Western Fun Management Co, with higher instincts, knowledge and compassion. After significant research I determined that the MSF program at Boston College will provide me with the skills necessary to achieve this intellectual and career potential.
