Annotated Bibliography – Strategic Management 1. Mintzberg, H., (1990) The design school: reconsidering the basic premises of strategic management, Strategic Management Journal, Vol. 11, PP 171-195 The main focus of the study was to help in discovering the ways to follow in order to come up with a sustainable business. The author intended to show how a business can be successful if a proper business plan is put into process (Mintzberg 1990). The intended audience by the writer is business and people who intend to get in the business venture. The purpose of the analysis carried out by the author was to show the importance of strategic management in commercial form, author defined strategy as fundamentally the choice for businesses focus. The special features are that the processes of ascertaining what a company might do in terms of ecological opportunities and this is quite helpful. The author credits that business plan and a business idea will make a company or business achieves its goals. Personal conclusion is that cost leadership or product differentiation, which would result in added value to the product or good offered to the buyer creating room for high incomes and profit. The author tries to show how people critically think to build a successful business and that is the author gives a hint on the successful ways and that is by having a business plan. 2. Ansoff, H., (1991) Critique of Henry Mintzberg's 'The design school: reconsidering the basic premises of strategic management,' Strategic Management Journal, Vol. 12, PP 449-461 The author classifies management as school of thoughts that shows management in different institutions. Mintzberg's own proposal for the basic values of strategic management is criticized by using the identical criterion. The intended audience by the writer is business and people who intend to get in the business venture. The author’s purpose of the work was the show strategy paradigm where the typical planning focus for the firm prepares financial budget with a time perspective of 12 months. The credibility of the author is that strategic management aim is to create, affirm aim and do data analysis in order to identify issues arising in the organization (Hill, et.al 2009). Special features include the collection of data entails making efforts of collecting data from other organization and even carrying out reviews from the outside environment and this is quite unique. The author concluded that survival, practical goals and operational goals must be enhanced by stake holders. The author’s conclusion of the work was the strategy paradigm creates good financial management.Personal conclusion is that strategic paradigm is away of performing financial management that grow the company’s economy and growth. 3. Mintzberg, H., and Waters, J. A., (1985) Of Strategies Deliberate and Emergent, Strategic Management Journal, Vol. 6, PP 257-272 Theme of the study was to focus of how business is run by microcomputer and these are the relationships that are accorded in business. Weaknesses are the challenging factors that an organization will face, altering the smooth flow of production strategies (Silver 2010). If the weaknesses are analyzed organization finds means of outrunning them and ensuring no factor affecting production process and these are the special features of the study. The author’s credibility is that he establishes the strengths available that contributes to growth. Management will make sure that the strengths are well managed to have successful outcomes. It passes massage to management to set ways on how to handle the threats. If comparison and contrasting is carried out the overall goal of strategic management and planning will be reliable. The purpose of the information given as the conclusion by the author was to show how the managers keep track of realized strategies in organizations and put across the concepts used in the strategic management. Personal conclusion is that these goals intended to boost the firm in responding to the environment. It creates a sustainable competitive aspect to an organization. 4. Kipping, M., and Cailluet, L., (2010) Mintzberg's Emergent and Deliberate Strategies: Tracking Alcan's Activities in Europe 1928-2007, Business History Review, Vol. 84 PP 99-104 The author shows business strategy including strategy formulation, analysis of the business environment positioning choices of firms within their industries, sustainability of spirited advantages, and horizontal and vertical capacity decisions. The targeted audiences by the writer are industry and competitors so as to learn how to cope with the business environment. Kipping and Cailluet, (2010) Mintzberg's say that strategic management contrasts the situations which are effective to use. Authors study showed the effectiveness of strategic management and how worthy is to be practiced in any organization this is achieved when the working environ is at stability, the future goals can be predicted and become more reliable to the organization. Contrast should be more effective when a high profile of hesitation exists, and leaders should make decisions in reaction to the unpredicted events are the special features of the study. The conclusions made stated how strategic management establishes the growth of businesses and organization due to proper management. 5. Pretorius, M., and Maritz, R., (2011) Strategy making: the approach matters, Journal of Business The author’s shows concepts such as business ethics and commercial social accountability are recurrently discussed; the impression of responsible leadership is less widely cherished. Managers are the intended audience as the authors describes responsible leadership, and the targeted audiences are leaders to be provided with leadership concepts, global factors that have influenced its development and its role in organizations. The usefulness of the research was to carry out general procedures of how to achieve proper and quality strategic management. From the researches according to each author the relevance of the findings gave a clear view of understanding of strategic management. The unique features from the authors were all the organizations must meet proper strategic management prior to successful growth and best profit returns. The authors’ background and credibility on strategy management was to show how company uses strategic management to set missions, setting objectives for the organization in light of peripheral and domestic forces, formulating particular strategies and policies in order to achieve the set objectives, as well as ensuring that they are properly implemented so that their basic objectives and purposes in the organization will be achieved. All the authors proved that strategic management creates a tremendous environment to all workers. The success of the organization was dependent on the quality of Strategic management established. Personal views suggest that management strategy should be maintained by having highly trained personnel with quality managerial skills.
