Extract of sample "Information Processing and Working Memory"

Working memory is defined as the area of the brain which holds information essential for completing a task. Unlike long term memory, which may store information for indefinite periods of time, working memory stores information for very brief periods of time. The information stored in working memory typically lasts for only 2-3 seconds at most, which gives the brain a chance to recognize the information, process it and apply it to the task at hand. Working memory is considered by researchers to be a vital aspect of the memory process.

The capacity for information within the working memory is very limited. Miller (1956) concluded that adults are able to process and repeat back only 7 pieces of information at a time. This phenomenon was labeled Miller’s Magic Number 7. However recent studies dispute Miller’s number and some theorists claim that the capacity of the working memory is limited to even fewer pieces of information. Recent studies also conclude that the capacity of the working memory also depends on the presentation of the information.

When information is presented verbally, the amount of information stored generally depends on the length of time it takes for one to speak the information aloud.
