I took up Electronics Engineering as this is a subject that straddles Computers, Electronics and Electrical engineering the way it is taught in the university. I was always interested in electronic equipment and gadgets right from my childhood and I made it a point to delve deeper into the underlying theory behind these gadgets. I want to pursue a career in Electronics engineering with particular emphasis on research and development as it would enable me to leverage on what I learnt in my course so far. I want to pursue an employment position with Sony Corporation as this would allow me the flexibility to choose between the different paths available under the graduate entry scheme. The fact that the corporation offers me the option to choose either a career in the Research and Development or Engineering section or any of the other career paths after the mandatory year in training makes the position attractive to me. The first year needs to be spent in the Graduate Entry scheme with the corporation providing me the necessary acclimatization and the consequent career choices that are available. The current state of the Electronics industry offers much scope for innovation and quality control with the latest efforts in Six Sigma and Zero Defect initiatives offering graduates with expertise in quality certifications the chance to move up the ladder. Since I have undergone several courses related to quality control, I believe that I have the skills to carry out the necessary audits and programs designed to train personnel towards Quality control. Thus, I believe that I have the necessary background to specialize in these fields. The focus of Sony corporation’s efforts towards quality control dovetails with my own emphasis on the same and I would like to be part of the initiative and apply whatever I have learnt so far. The Electronics industry is highly quality conscious and it is in this field that I plan to work and give my best towards the efforts to maintain quality. Finally, my understanding of the current economic situation is that the Industry would devote more time to innovation and productivity and I hope to maximize my utility to the company given the emphasis that I have placed in these fields till now. Thus, I would like to be part of the corporation’s graduate entry program. I hope my skills and expertise would be rewarded by doing so. Task 2: My SWOT Analysis for my Continuing Professional Development (CPD) In no more than 400 words critically appraise your current position using the SWOT analysis framework. Strengths My main strength is my ability to get into the details and pay attention to the little things. Given that the branch of electronics is highly specialized and needs skills that include attention to detail and focus on the micro picture, I believe that my ability to focus is a great asset in this field. My other strengths include patience and ability to work hard at a problem till the solution is found. This never give up attitude has stood me in good stead till now. Thus, I have tried to utilize these skills of mine effectively till now. Weaknesses My main weakness is that I tend to overlook the bigger picture component of design in my effort to seek the details. I have to remember that attention to detail does not mean that I get lost in the maze of fine print and ignore the larger picture. Thus, this can be said as a spot of bother for me. It has been my wish to improve myself in this particular area and I should continue to do so with my efforts focused on trying to work out the linkages and look for the larger objectives of the course. Opportunities I recognize that the time I spend in the university as well as in researching various aspects of the design labs is precious and I have to make the most of it. Thus, it is my endeavor to ensure that I strive for maximum productivity in whatever I do and seek to utilize my potential for larger things that need to be done. I make it a point to attend seminars and other presentations on the latest trends in the industry and thus acquaint myself with the various aspects of learning that accrue by keeping myself abreast of the happenings in my chosen field. Threats The current economic slowdown is a threat to my success in the chosen career and I have to ensure that I make the most of the choices before me and maximize on the opportunities. I have to take the threat of not having the luxury of settling in my job and having a feeling of certainty about my career in my stride and not let that affect me in a major way. Further, the threat of not getting what I want in terms of career path is a real one and I should ensure that I keep myself updated on this front. Task 3.My CPD Plan Select one weakness, as identified in your SWOT, and then show how you plan to address this weakness as part of your CPD. (use no more than 200 words for this task) As described in the section related to weakness, my inability to miss the broader framework while paying too much attention to detail would be the focus area for me as far as working on my weakness is concerned. I plan to address this by focusing my efforts on doubling my efforts in securing the necessary expertise to look beyond the fine print and connect the dots. I need to concentrate on this aspect of the program without losing my essential strengths. I need to strike a balance between what I do best and what I ought to do best. Towards this end, I plan to take some courses in Macro management and circuit theory that would present me with an opportunity to explore the dimensions of the picture in a better way and ensure that I have the opportunity to work my way through the area of weakness. Finally, I believe that I have to evolve a framework wherein I capitalize on my strengths and minimize on my weaknesses so that I attain optimal productivity in my work.
