Organisations in the present business world need to operate in a multi-cultural environment taking into concern varied factors to operate successfully. Therefore, the managers and leaders of an organisation need to be provided training and development opportunities so that they are able to deal with varied challenges. In this regard, the essay intends to provide a discussion about the leadership as well as management development programme of Jaguar Land Rover. The company is a British transnational organisation functioning in the automobile industry. It is a subsidiary company belonging to Tata Motors of India. In addition, a detailed SWOT analysis about the company’s leadership and management development programme will be studied (John Wiley & Sons, 2009). In this case study, the discussion would aim to find out the root causes for which the company may face difficulties in the future. Certain recommendations for making necessary changes in the management as well the leadership programmes that the company can adopt in order to see a better tomorrow will also be provided. Benefits of Leadership and Management Development Programme In order to comprehend the varied inherent aspects about leadership and management development programme, it is very important to determine the actual meaning of leadership and management. Leadership relates to directing the individuals in such a manner that they are focused to reach out to their goals and hence are able to perform those activities which are required in order to attain their goals (Rothwell & Kazanas, 1999). Similarly, management is a process which involves formulation of plans, planning of activities, controlling of activities, coordination with team members and encouraging them to reach their expected results (Cole, 2004). With proper development of leadership and management there are many benefits that can be attained in business. In this regard, a report by CMI-Penna, which was prepared along with a collaboration of Henley Business School and which considered the findings of around 4500 managers, including more than 800 higher level managers of numerous companies can be highlighted. This report was created which proved to be a very important tool for management and leadership development. This report proved to be very fruitful because it showed different evidences about the benefits of leadership and management development activities in different companies. It also showed about its contribution in increasing 32% if the performance of the people and 23% augmentation in the overall performance of the organisation. Also, proper training on leadership development can bring superior organisational results which prove to be the return on investment (ROI) for a company. For example, those companies which are exercising more leadership development programmes seem to be listed in the Fortune magazine and come under the most recognised companies list 1.5 times more than other companies (McBain & et. al., 2012: Kincaid & Gordick, 2003) Leadership and Management Development at Jaguar Land Rover Leadership in Jaguar Land Rover is considered as a prerogative of Tata Motors, after the ownership was taken by Tata Group. The company has established different leadership policies to follow at different levels of management. These programmes were developed to bring out great business leaders with dynamism and also for boosting the high performance of the employees. These programmes were also meant to boost proper organisational results with exceptionable leadership along with facilitating in managing the people in a professional manner. Moreover, Tata as compared to Ford Motor Company which was the former owner of Jaguar is very result oriented. Tata wants its people to go by their commitment and take full responsibility of their work. It itself is a challenge for Jaguar Land Rover to have such a strong enforcer but following the ground rules laid down by Tata can only lead it to achieve organisational excellence (Malleswar, n.d.; Incomes Data Services Ltd, 2011). Management development plays a vital role for the overall organisational excellence. It should be exercised in an integrated manner. And, for proper management development quality management education should be imparted to the employees. Management education should reflect the work experience of the employee. It should be an interactive process and it should always facilitate learning (Bolden, 2010). Management development at Jaguar Land Rover is very dynamic. Here, the employees are motivated to lead themselves and their team and also their task. This way the employees get self dependent and they perform their duties in an organised manner (Incomes Data Services Ltd, 2011). SWOT Analysis on the Leadership and Management Development of Jaguar Land Rover Every company has certain factors in which the standing and profitability of the company depend upon. Similarly, a company may have its own weaknesses that may consist of low working capital, low experience in the market, less number of manpower and support. It also may have certain areas in which it can work upon and strengthen to get better organisational results. Similarly, there may be certain areas in which a company is very much vulnerable. For example, high attrition rate, low working capital and easily duplicated products among others. However, strengths may not always be used as an advantage because it may not be enough to achieve competitive advantage in the market (Dess, 2009). Jaguar Land Rover has a diversified range of products. There are a lot of options available in the products of Jaguar Land Rover. It can be considered as a strong factor which can facilitate the company to distinguish itself from its competitors. Apart from this, the company strongly believes in innovation and is continuously launching new products in the market in order to fit itself with market standards. Moreover, Jaguar Land Rover has an established brand image all over the world which is very important in today’s marketing scenario. The company trains its employees with all the latest leadership and management development programmes which provide its employees a deeper understanding of the management practices (Jaguar, n.d.). Jaguar Land Rover also has certain factors in which it is required to work upon. Like every other company, Jaguar Land Rover also has many competitors. The company has to continuously keep on innovating themselves and remain abreast with the market demands. Another important factor that may be considered as a weakness for Jaguar Land Rover is because of the fact that it has been taken over by an Indian company. It is true that the company can earn huge profits because of the merger but psychologically it may create a negative impact in the mind of the former owner of the company (Jaguar, n.d.). The quality of leadership and management development programmes that the company offer to its employees is very unique and through its development programmes it is committed to bring out the best from its employees who will definitely lead to better results. A very strong factor that will lead to future development of the company is the aspect that due to combined strengths of two automobile giants i.e. Tata and Jaguar it can easily penetrate the global market and earn huge profits. Thus, by working as a single unit it can reach exceptionable heights in the market. Also, there are different talents from two different companies. They can share their ideas among each other and hence they can get the benefit collectively (Jaguar, n.d.). It is a highly competitive environment thus to ensure competitiveness sustained positive changes need to be made in every facet of the organisation including leadership and management development programmes to remain up-to-date. Moreover, there are different talents from two diverse companies who are working as a single unit. This factor has advantages as well as disadvantages. There may be ego clashes between the employees and mismatch of ideas which may pose as a threat (Jaguar, n.d.). Recommendations From the overall observations, it is seen that the company has certain factors to work upon. In order to stay ahead of the competitors, Jaguar land Rover will have to follow competitive pricing policies so that their pricing does not affect its customers. It should follow latest trends and innovations in order to stay ahead in the market as well as for attracting maximum number of customers. It should take the opportunity of being operated by India’s major vehicle manufacturing giant to the fullest. Jaguar Land Rover and Tata both are major automobile companies. With their combined efforts, it can rule the overall automobile industry. It should attempt to adhere to the market standards at every possible level so that its brand name does not get affected. It should try to maintain the organisational values and keep on revolutionising so that the company can adapt to the ever-changing business environment. Moreover, in terms of leadership and management development programmes the company can focus on imparting cross-cultural training among the employees apart from its existing dynamic business leaders along with high performance leaders program (Incomes Data Services Ltd, 2011). Conclusion After a detailed study about Jaguar Land Rover and its leadership and management approach, it is apparent that the company is one of the fastest growing companies in a global context. The quality of leadership and management programmes that are imparted to the employees are very dynamic. All the employees are taken care of by multiple types of programmes catering to the requirements of the employees in order to meet the market standards. It is observed that alike a number of other companies, Jaguar Land Rover also possess many competitors. The company has to continuously keep on innovating themselves to cope up with the market demands. However, with certain constructive efforts the varied limitations can be omitted. Apart from other strong factors, Jaguar Land Rover has a diversified range of products. There are a lot of options available in the product offerings of Jaguar Land Rover. Moreover, it can be considered as a strong factor which can distinguish itself from its competitors. The company also holds a very strong image in the market and it is recognised as a top brand which may provide it sustainable competitive advantages. Thus, it is evident that Jaguar Land Rover is playing a very dominant role in the automobile market but like every company it has also certain factors that are needed to be exercised upon. Nevertheless, it can be stated that the success rates of the company are much more superior to its limitations. Moreover, in order to increase the effectiveness of its leadership approaches the company can focus on cross-cultural approaches to maintain enhanced progression in future. These kinds of approaches can facilitate the company to gain long-term benefits. References Bolden, R., 2010. Leadership, Management and Organisational Development.
