Introduction

The One-Child policy was a population control method adopted by the government of China in 1970 to slow down its population that was rapidly growing. China was reported to have experienced an annual rate of population increase of 1.9 per cent since 1950 (BBC, 2014). This was after the previous administrations had allowed for multiple children in China with the argument that it would help in expanding the labour force of China. As a back-up to these calls, it is stated that access to social amenities like sanitation and medical services along with the basic needs were improved so as to boon the Chinese economy. However, this resulted in a huge population explosion which consequently led to increased pressure on the social amenities, economic resources and environment. This is because as the Chinese government emphasised improving the living conditions and the well-being of its people, little attention was given to the rapid growth in the population that was already soaring up.
