The study also analyses the impact of the established institutions on the economic performance of a country. In order to analyze this, the study will focus on using a theory of institutional differences across countries. The theory assesses the different types of colonization policies that led to the establishment of different institutions. It also analyses the possibility of continuity of these institutions even after the colonization period had ended. Finally, the theory will analyze the impact of these early institutions on the current institutions.

Using these three, the study aims at analyzing the relationship between settler mortality and the performance of the European institutions since it is the settlers who were working in the institutions. The study also has a goal of finding out the effect of settler mortality on the settlements. It also aims at analyzing the effect of types of colonization policies on the European settlements. Finally, the study focuses on analyzing the effect of institutional performance on the European economy.

The study majorly analyses the period of colonialism when most of the countries were colonized. This is between the sixteenth century and nineteenth century. The data about settler mortality rates is taken for settlers who lived over hundred years ago. However, the study analyses the effects of these mortality rates against the output today. The period during which the slave trade occurred, which is before the mid-nineteenth century, is also analyzed in the study. Most of the data used in the study was obtained from historical evidence from ancient manuals and stored records.

Taking for instance, data on mortality rates was obtained from the mortality rates of soldiers, bishops, and sailors stationed in the colonies between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries.
