In almost every line of their conversation is an underlying tone that is constant throughout the story. In Hills Like White Elephants, neither the American nor the girl truly express their thoughts to each other. Furthermore, neither of them truly listens to what the other is saying. This stresses the gap between the two.
At the end of the first one hundred years of book printing, the format of the book had changed to suit the needs of both the printer and the reader. The function of the printed book changed from being a measure of social status to a means by which people satisfied their quest for knowledge. Books were also used as entertainment.
From this research, it is clear that creating a narrative is the ability to create different universes, to bring to life worlds that have passed or never existed. This makes human beings decidedly more interesting. In creating different worlds the human being has created a method for expanding his or her own experience.
The book's main message is one that discusses the importance of seeing people for who they are, and not trying to classify them as one particular race or culture. I think this is a message that is especially important for social workers to keep in mind as they struggle to help those who are not a part of the dominant culture or socio-economic class.
