A Different Ending
Becky reached for her laptop as soon as she got into her room in order to finish her final article for the season. It was almost winter and she thought she needed to give her readers a few reminders on what smart things to do in order to save on winter suits. She has started typing a few sentences for the introduction when she realized she wanted to talk about sewing old stuff. She opened a webpage to see some stuff she could put together when she saw a picture of the model with colorful coat from Prada. The newly released Picasso winter coats from Prada were unbelievably for sale at 20% off. Becky closed her eyes for a while to resist the temptation but the eyes of Picasso’s portrait really caught her, it seduced her interest. The eyes were stunning. It matched the yellow hair and red lips that part near the hemline. “A genius design,” she said to herself. Indeed, this was nothing similar to what she had in her closet. Before she noticed it, she clicked on the picture and the image became real. She was amazed at the brown coat with the blue portrait and a large earring..and the price…EURO 35,000. She almost puked. She turned her eyes to a pop up that showed a Kate Spade coat and clicked on it. The page displayed the latest winter collection. She liked the magenta fur coat with a golden zipper and collar. Click.
The weeks passed by very smoothly as Becky and Suze shopped for more necessities for the upcoming wedding. Becky knew she would miss Suze a lot especially now that she realized she was getting older, herself. She was into these thoughts when her iPhone rang. It was a familiar number and not Derek’s but she was afraid to take the call. The caller left a voice message, telling her of an invitation to appear on another TV show with Luke. Another message on her phone told her she could get her check from last month’s TV episodes. This was the opportunity she waited for. Uneasy with the Kate Spade coat she ordered online, Becky decided to get the Prada coat with the Picasso portrait. It looked stunning on her. She was really made for Prada.
The day of the TV appearance finally came and the weather was very cold. The Prada coat really made sense with the weather. Luke was looking debonair with his grey coat. He waved at her and smiled. The floor director gave them a few hints before the live shoot and she felt at ease with everything. “The Prada coat must have done it,” she told herself. Selma, the show host welcomed them and she could not resist noticing the coat Becky was wearing. All the other women looked at Becky with envy, possibly due to the coat or for sitting next to Luke.
The interview went well but Selma could not control herself from commenting about the Prada coat that Becky was wearing. On national TV, she actually commented and had Becky stand up to show them the Picasso portrait on it. Selma asked how it felt on her, and Becky could not think otherwise but to say, “I feel like I’m the CEO of a big corporation.” This remark made everybody laugh, including Luke but Becky blushed thinking Derek Smeath could be watching at that very moment.
Luke had arranged a dinner for them at a nearby hotel. The night was lovely and so was the place. He was very apologetic for his busy schedule and promised Becky to make more time for her from then on. “Are we together?” she wanted to ask but her phone rang too loudly that the people on the other table were exasperated. She dismissed the call. It was Derek once again. She turned off the phone and sipped her wine. Luke was very romantic that night. He was irresistible and so they spent the night at her place, knowing that Suze is out of the country for her wedding preparations.
The smell of brewed coffee woke Becky up. Luke was first to get up and he searched his way to the kitchen to make some coffee. He smiled as Becky opened her eyes. This was the best morning she had in that flat. The two of them just finished breakfast when the door bell rang. Becky was surprised to see a tall guy in grey polo under a suede coat. “I am looking for Ms. Bloomwood,” he uttered. Becky was astonished at his greeting. She felt all the blood flushed from her cheeks. She almost fainted and before she uttered anything, Derek said, “Aren’t you Becky Bloomwood? I just watched you on Selma’s show yesterday with the businessman. So it was really you. Anyway, Ms. Bloomwood, I’m afraid you’ll have to explain a lot to me, why you’re not taking my calls and you’re not paying your dues.” Derek was firm in his tone. “Maybe you can come back some other time. This really is a bad timing” Becky was anxious that Luke might hear about Derek’s concern. “But you’re always busy. I need a word with you, Ms. Bloomwood,” he insisted. “Honey, is there any problem?” Luke was near. Astonished, Becky whispered, “I’ll call you up, I promise…please!” then she promptly closed the door before Luke came up.
“That was my cousin,” she told Luke. He thought he could spend time here as he always had whenever he felt alone but I couldn’t let him in. I can’t spoil the only time you’re here” she explained. “But that’s alright,” Luke answered. “I’m not a stranger, am I? Who knows I could be part of your family soon.” Luke’s eyes were glooming. “What did you mean?” Becky asked. To her surprise, Luke opened a small jewelry box that contained an enormously beautiful engagement ring. “Will you marry me?” he asked, looking Becky straight in the eyes. Becky could not utter anything. After the nerve-cracking encounter she had with Derek, it was difficult not to feel frazzled. She could not say anything but she knew she was very happy. She embraced Luke who was still waiting for her reply. With tears in her eyes, she said, “I’m really sorry. I just think I’m not ready for this.” She could not believe she said what she had. Luke was puzzled. He gazed at her with such a surprise and with a sad expression, whispered, “Are you in love with someone else?”
“No, it’s not like that!” Becky’s voice was tensed. “There’s no other party. I’m just not ready for this and not this year, probably. I need to do a lot of things for myself before I could be your wife. I need to organize myself, attend Suze’s wedding, visit my family, write and shoot my remaining episodes, pay my debts….” the last phrase was unintended. She did not intend to tell Luke about her debts.
Luke caught her eyes and told her, “Whatever it is that you’re worrying about, we’ll have it done. We’ll do everything together. Just let me be part of it. We could go to Suze’s wedding, visit your family, I’ll accompany you to your shooting, help you pay your debts…whatever you wish.” Luke said smiling. “Just don’t walk out on me.”
Becky could not believe what she said. She did not know it was that easy to tell him all her worries. Just then she felt her comfort zone widened with Luke’s statement. She felt a new spirit to face life, to see Derek the next day and hand him over a check to pay her dues, partially. She intended to pay the bank all she got from the regular show. The rest will be handled by Luke, she thought. That night, she slept in peace.
The next day, she attended Suze’s shower party where she got to see Suze’s cousins and college friends. They were giving gifts to Suze when she received a call from Lifestyle Channel. The managing editor told her that they were thinking of putting up a show for Becky, one that advises women about what to wear for different occasions. The manager said her team was really impressed by the way she looked at Selma’s show. “When can you drop by for the contract?” the manager asked. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” Becky replied with excitement.
When she returned, Suze was making a speech about her excitement to finally get married and about the feeling of being a mother later on and missing her friends, especially her roommate. Becky smiled while tears gathered her eyes. She could feel the same way as she thought of tying the knot with Luke.
Suze’s wedding was beautiful. Luke escorted her despite the long travel to Scotland and the meetings he had to cancel just to be with Becky. From there, she felt Luke’s sincerity when he said he will be with her in everything. She clasped his hand as Suze and her groom took their vows. She was happy to be with Luke but was beaming to think of the newly opened opportunity to pay up her remaining debts.
