William Blake's Love's Secret - Book Report/Review Example

11 February Introduction Secrecy of love is a condition to retain love feelings for the loved one as reflected by the central theme of William Blake’s poem. In this secrecy, care, love and affection live for longer period of time, if they are kept inside one’s heart. Most importantly, the author has woven love with secrecy and it will vanish away if it is told or shared with the loved one. In contrast to this position, William Blake’s poem (Love’s secret) necessitates that love should always be secret and should never be told. However, this paper’s main theme is to argue against this kind of love feelings as such love is unfound in today’s time. For understanding this, following expressions have been taken from William Blake’s poem. Never seek to tell thy love, Love that never told can be; For the gentle wind doth move Silently, invisibly. (quoted in Gousseff 162) In this part, the main theme is to suggest that if love is told, it would disappear and would not exist anymore. In these lines, the author is trying to highlight the significance of love through the source of secrecy and it would be the main benefit of the secrecy that would give existence to love and love feelings; and it is the cover of secrecy that gives strength to love feelings and if that cover is taken away, the love would lost its value and the love feelings would not be useful. At the same time, love feelings are being compared with wind in these lines. The author compares love with wind by expressing that love is like wind and it should always be invisible and secret. More clearly, the author explains that wind blows and is felt by everyone but nobody has seen the wind. Besides, the author is trying to suggest that wind exists because of its invisibility and it would remain forever. Subsequently, the author is expressing that love should be like wind and it should have similar characteristics that are inbuilt to the structure of wind. However, in today’s world, it is difficult to stay in love without informing the loved one. If the loved one does not know that someone loves her, how would it be possible to retain the relationship? In this regard, it is important to highlight that the poem does not specify love between mother and son or between boy and girl. This remains the main ambiguity as both are natural forms of love that are being observed in every society. More importantly, the author has not mentioned how to show or express feelings of love other than telling about love. I told my love, I told my love, I told her all my heart, Trembling, cold, in ghastly fears. Ah! She did depart! (quoted in Gousseff 162) Love is expression (Johnson 164). If love is told, she would depart. This is the main theme of this part in which the author is expressing fear and unfavorable outcome if love is told. Keeping in view these lines, it is difficult to understand that why she would depart. In this regard, it is important to mention that the author has not pointed out any particular reason that would compel or force her to depart. If love is to remain secret, how it would create a feeling of understanding between lovers. In love, it is generally believed that love cannot be one-sided but it is a two-way journey in which both talk, share and express their feelings for creating lovable atmosphere and flourish understanding. Without sharing expressions of love with the loved one, it would not be possible to understand the intention of the lover. In this type of situations, it would be possible that the love would always be one-sided in which only lover would give sacrifice for her. William Blake’s poem (Love’s secret) necessitates that love should always be secret and should never be told. However, this paper’s main theme is to argue against this kind of love feelings as such love is unfound in today’s time. More importantly, it can be deduced that the author is attempting to express that love would always be one-sided. However, there are serious ramifications for that kind of love. First, the loved one would never know that someone loves her and if she does not know that, the lover would not be able obtain his purpose of love. In love, it is commonly understood that the lover always wants to pass serene and beautiful moments with her by showing feelings of love and care for her. In a nutshell, the lover always wants to develop a relationship of love, care, trust and understanding with the loved one. And the purpose of this is to marry with her and pass whole life with her. Here, the author expresses that sharing of love feelings would take her away and she would not return to the lover. In other words, the lover remains in fear and does not want to lose her by telling the love feelings. And in the first two lines of the above poem, the author expresses love and affection and insists that love exists and it is not artificial but is genuine as it not for display but resides deep inside heart. “Love is expression and expression is creation and creation is truth” (Rambova 189). In this regard, without saying “I love you,” it would not be possible that two individuals would be able to start the process of understanding which leads to the place of matrimony. If love is not expressed, marriage and other social bonds would not exist and would fail to remain useful and constructive for people living in the society. Soon after she was gone from me, A traveler came by, Silently, invisibly: He took her with a sigh. (quoted in Gousseff 162) The Author’s fear changes into a physical reality. The main theme of this part is that she would not be his love after the expression of love and anyone else would come and take her away. In this regard, it is important to argue that why would she go with that person? Keeping in view the context of this part, it is fair to say that her departure with the traveler was also a sign of love and expression of affectionate feelings for him. And it is the expression of traveler that convinced her to take a journey of love with him for better future and better love days. At the core, love is expression (Weissman 31). Without expression of love, love does not exist and love cannot be valuable for both the lover and the loved one as it is the fragrance of expression that joins two lovers and enables them to pass their life with understanding and care for each other. And there are numerous ways to express love. For example, if a lover wants to see her happy and; this kind of feeling is genuine in which only happiness of the loved one is sought, and the lover takes all those steps that bring happiness to her without expressing love; this is the most important non-verbal expression of love. More specifically, if the loved one is in immediate need of money; and the lover provides it and only wants her to get rid of that difficulty.
