Lucky’s Speech In the book “Waiting for Godot”, Lucky’s Speech is an interesting piece of work in literature world and would be given much attention in this essay. In the speech made by Lucky, the general theme could be said to mockery of the academic institutions. Lucky gives a speech which does not emphasize on the importance of academics for one to be successful (Beckett 65). Lucky believes that a person’s life is not subject entirely to success in academics, but believes that God play a vital role to any man’s success.

Lucky believes that not all success stories emanate from academics as it also carries fools in it. In Lucky’s speech, there are a number of imagery techniques that have been employed in order to direct his motive of the speech. Take for example in line 18 in the speech, Lucky says “the Acacacacademy of Anthropopopometry” (Beckett 65). Lucky does this intentionally to mock the academic institution to not have done nothing to influence success of people. He continues in the speech and adds more, “popopo”, a word which is equivalent to feces (Beckett 65).

Lucky scorns the academic world and relates it to excreta. In using such words in his speech, Lucky tries to employ the use of imagery so as to be understood. He implies that academic institutions are sometimes filled with useless things (Beckett 65). As you proceed further in the speech, he is quoted to have said, “Essy-in-Possy”, a word which in French is equivalent to how children described their excrement. In using such language in his speech, totally denotes the level which he had stooped in order to provide the best image of the academic institutions.

Usually, such words are often used by newly toilet trained kids, hence creating an element of contrast in the speech. In addition, the speech continues by providing more mockery statements to some of the famous writers and thinkers in the academic field. Lucky does that intentionally by uttering obscene words which somehow sound like the names of those known people. A good example could be “Fartoy and Belcher,” which closely sounds as (fart and belch) (Beckett 65). Another example could be “Wattman and Puncher” which closely sounds as (streetcar driver and ticker puncher” (Beckett 65).

In Lucky’s speech, he talks about these writers and thinkers as though they were great, yet he pronounces their names not matching their titles, and he does that intentionally to associate their names to some of the things he intended to give image to. In giving reference to them in a way that does not respect them, clearly denotes that the given people did not have any impact whatsoever in his making and should not be acknowledged at any given time. Furthermore, it is as if he refers to these scholars as having done nothing in their career to make an impact in his life.
