Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: Plot OverviewSummaryOne night, Dumbledore, the head of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry reveals to his companions that Voldemort has killed Mr. and Mrs. Potter, and has failed to kill their son Harry. Dumbledore leaves Harry in a basket outside the house of Mr. Dursley. After ten years, the Dursleys’ son Dudley dominates the household and bullies Harry. Mysterious letters start arriving for Harry. Mr. Dursely shifts to a secluded island with his family.

At midnight a giant Hagrid gives Harry an entrance letter to Hogwarts. Harry is then taken by Hagrid to London where they then shop for school supplies (SparkNotes). The next month, Harry catches a train to Hogwarts, on which he befriends Ron and Hermione, his fellow students. At school, each new student is allocated a residential house. Harry dreads being entered to the ominous Slytherin house but is assigned to the decent Gryffindor house, together with Ron and Hermione (SparkNotes). In the first broomstick flying lesson, Harry performs a spectacular feat against a Slytherin bully.

Professor McGonagall then recommends Harry to play Quidditch. The bully Malfoy challenges Harry to a midnight wizard’s duel, at which Malfoy himself doesn’t show up and Harry gets in trouble. While hiding he discovers a three-headed dog in guard of a trapdoor in a forbidden corridor. On Halloween, Harry and Ron secretly leave their dormitory to look for Hermione who is uninformed of a troll in the building. They defeat the troll. Hermione saves Harry and Ron from punishment by telling a lie.

During Quidditch match, Hermione notices that Professor Snape is jinxing Harry’s broom, so she sets his clothes on fire. Harry then wins the match (Sparknotes). Harry gets his father’s invisibility cloak for Christmas wearing which he explores the building late at night. He finds the Mirror of Erised which shows the heartiest desire of its user. Harry, Ron and Hermione come to know that the three-headed dog guards the Sorcerer’s stone which brings eternal life and enormous wealth to its owner, and is owned by Dumbledore’s partner Nicolas Flamel.

Hagrid obtains a dragon egg. As it is forbidden to own dragons, Harry and his friends try to dispose it off but are caught and punished, and Gryffindor is deprived of 150 points. Their punishment includes finding out who kills the unicorns in the forest. Harry discovers Voldemort as the culprit, and also learns that Voldemort wants to steal the Sorcerer’s stone. In order to get the stone before Voldemort does, Harry and his friends reach the third-floor corridor. They perform spectacular feats to get close to the stone.

Harry is then faced with Quirell whose body is inhabited by Voldemort and is instructed by him to kill Harry. But Quirrel dies, and Harry passes out. In the hospital, Dumbledore tells Harry that he has saved Harry from Quirrell, and also that it has been decided to destroy the stone. While Slytherin is celebrating its victory of the house championship, Dumbledore awards extra points to Gryffindor for Harry’s feats, and thus Gryffindor wins the house cup (SparkNotes).
