A Modest Proposal A Modest Proposal The essay d A Modest Proposal is written by Jonathan Swift whose basic aim is to provide solution of the hunger problem that prevails Ireland. For this purpose, the author had adopted an approach that mostly revolves around mockery or scorn that ultimately leads to a surprise ending. The author has successfully portrayed his surprise ending in such a way that it leaves the readers in awe. It was in the second last paragraph that the readers get a hint that the story is going against the expectation and this is what actually happens.

The second last paragraph talks about Swift’s proposal as to why the poor people should sell of their children and he debates on his proposition and at the end he realizes how cheap his idea is, this is another hint of the surprise ending. Swift was successful in presenting his surprise ending for more than one reasons such as the fact that the author himself had realized the stupidity of his proposal and also because his observation is actually meant to change the minds of those who are opinionated about everything, so that they may think like the author and lastly the author also states that the parents should sell off their children at a young age so they don’t have to pay for them to reach adolescence.

The author finally gives away his surprise ending by saying that he has no children to sell off and hence no source to earn in the extra cash. This was all because the author knew how to build up his article towards the surprise ending so that at the end the readers will agree with him. References Swift, J. (1729).
