College Discussion posting In the Peony Pavilion, Du Liniang is depicted as a highly educated girl. This is depicted in the way she is able to ditch her lesson on this fateful day to take a little nap in the garden (Birch, 34). Considering that she was the daughter of an important chief in their neighborhood, then she had to receive the best education to maintain her father’s and entire family reputation. The character is also loving. She falls in love with a man she had never met and all this happens in a dream.
However, even after waking up, this fantasy follows her and she remains restless and love sick with a man she never knew. Even after her death, she continues to love this young scholar and leaders in the underworld indicate that Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei (the young man she fell in love with in a dream) were destined to get married (Birch, 198). She is also determined and strong willed in that even after her death, she is determined to be with the young man in her dream. This results into her resurrection to be united with Liu Mengmei.
Du Liniang interacts with other characters with much respect, caring and loving attitude. Despite the fact that she was the daughter of an important member of the society, she does not despise other people. This is evident in the way she falls in love with a young man that she never even knew. Other people also react to her with much love, admiration and respect. Other societal members admired her determination, loving and charismatic attitude. This is evident in the way even her maid is not afraid of persuading her (Du Liniang) to take a walk in the garden (Birch, 100).
