If Buddha was my father, he might have gladly given me my needs for such a ridiculous idea. Unfortunately, my father is a hard-working man who believes that my decisions and actions today will have consequences which I will either enjoy or suffer tomorrow. As a parent, he says he needs to guide me through my reckless and naïve stage in life so that I do not have to waste my youth on anything. Who am I to fret when he means well? Anyway, for the Chinese, a father is an authority that cannot be questioned.

I wanted to run away, to find my place under the sun. I wanted to be independent, out of the grip of any man. However, I have great fears about not certainly knowing what might happen to me. Therefore, I will have to be content of running to my sanctuary, away from my father’s observant eyes that will forever be fixed on me until I break down. Ah, yes. The temple is my home, my sanctuary. This is where I feel safe and more importantly, it is where I sit and think for hours without being disturbed.

This is not the first time I have been here. For countless days, my mother brought me to this place to pray and reflect on the important things that matter to both of us. My mother is a firm yet gentle person she has always been an inspiration to me. She has spoken so many wise words to me that have been inscribed in my heart. As I sit here alone, I can almost hear her words resounding through the walls. “In times of troubles, meditate. It will clear your mind and make you choose things more wisely”, she would always say.

Her words were always strong and powerful for some reason I cannot quite see from where it is coming from. I reckon her words stayed with me because I have always watched her do things before she instructed me to do them.
