Discussion posting In the story of Yingying, the character of Yingying/Oriole depicts herself as a strong woman but inside she is weak. She does not show her emotions and it is evident that she is afraid of something. The reason is that even though Chan writes to her numerous poems, she is initially shy to respond back to them. In addition, there is a time that Chan found her playing zither but when Chan appeared, she immediately stopped playing (Wang 34). She was also very strict and is depicted when Chan opens up about his feelings towards the character to Hung-Niang,her maid.

The maid ran off very afraid and the next day told him never to anything like that again. The character is also is arrogant as visible in the way she responds back to Chan after luring him to come to her house for the first time after he made his feelings known to her. On the other hand, in the story of western wing, the character is easy to love and does not fear to reveal emotions. This is evident from the word go when she met a scholar in a monastery and they fell in love. The character also respects her mother.

This is evident from the time her mother gives orders that the individual who will chase away the bandits will be the only who would marry (Wang 45). After the young scholar she met in the monastery helps in chasing the bandits away, her mother changes her word again.
